Ah. Man, tough question.

My favourite? Yoshi's Island, SNES. I can't exactly describe why this one does it for me more than any other, only that it's like glee in cartridge form. Maybe it's the brilliant soundtrack, the clever puzzles, the tight handling and controls, the story book aesthetic.. I dunno, it was just so cool.

From a technical standpoint though, Mario 64. Considering where gaming was at the time, it was totally revolutionary. It was huge, it greatly rewarded exploration and it still holds it's own today. It also totally captured the essence of a Mario game.

2D: Super Mario World. C'mon! This game is legendary.

3D: Super Mario Sunshine. Yep. It was a tiny bit better than Galaxy.

Super Mario Sunshine. I like the whole island motif.

Also, first appearance of Bowser Jr. That rocks socks.

My personal favorite and IMO the best ever made, Mario Galaxy. It took everything that made Mario 64 so good and brought it into the current generation, adding new concepts without alienating the core of the game. The 2D games were legendary (SMB3 and World in particular), but I just don't think you can beat the expansiveness of the 3D titles.

Hm, well....

NES: Super Mario Brothers 3.
SNES: Never had one...
N64: Mario 64, Paper Mario.
Gamecube: Mario Sunshine, Paper Mario: TTYD.
Wii: Mario Galaxy. (Super Paper Mario gets honorable mention, but should have stuck to the turn-based RPG format of it's predecessors.)

Overall: 64, Paper Mario, Galaxy, in more or less that order.

Note that I don't like most of the spin-offs, particularly the sports and racing based ones, due to not enjoying those genres of games to begin with. The early Mario Party games were good (but not great), but they've been milking that series for so long without doing anything special with it that I've just stopped bothering with those.

My two choices exactly. Especially Yoshi's Island.

Apart from those two, Super Mario RPG is up there, as is Super Mario Bros 3 (Super Mario All-Stars remake).

My favorite?

SMW, SM64, or Sunshine. (Come on you guys, Sunshine was different, but it was still incredibly challenging and amazing)

Followed by Yoshi's Island 1, SMB3, SMB2 (japan),

Spinoffs

SMRPG, Paper Mario 64 MK:DD, Mario Power Tennis (They featured Diddy, I know Toadstool tour did it first, but I never owned that one)

Runners up: Paper Mario TTYD, a couple others

It's a Secret to Everybody!
Even thought a bunch people already said this one, Super Mario World

The best 3D Mario game is Super Mario 64

Galaxy was too easy and too linear to top 64, but it was still a very fun game.

Agree'd

Anyways, I feel that the best Mario game is SMB3. The level designs were great, the powerups were great, the music was great, the secrets were great, the whole darn game is great! The only thing I don't like about itis it's repetative boss battle, though the final one is once again, great. :)

A close second would be the best 3d Mario game, Super Mario Galaxy (wohoo?). The only things keeping me from calling it #1 are its relative lack of difficulty and its seeming obsseion with water-levels. Otherwise it's awesome.

I'd say Super Mario Bros 3 hands down for me. Has my favorite power ups and level designs. World was fun too, but It was way too easy. SM64 stages were a tad too long for me, but I still liked it. But all in all:

Favorite 2D: Mario 3
Favorite 3D: Mario Galaxy

The RPG/Paper/Partners series is, in my opinion, better than the main series. Other than that, however, I'd have to say Galaxy. It's just such a good game.

Um...Brawl isn't a Mario game. Just a note.

My favorite Mario game is Super Mario 64. Sunshine comes in a close second.

Not the question, but just thought I'd throw in that the worst one = Galaxy.

You are allowed to count the 2d games in this you know. Unless you're saying that your favorite and least favorite Mario games both happen to be 3d games, in which case, just ignore me.:)
