Any point in entering tournaments if I'm not that great at advanced techs?

Just go and enter. Even if you get destroyed all day if you get one WD back to smash attack you will feel great and will have great inspiration to keep practicing your techs before the next tournament. That's how it was for me anyway..

This is the truth. Basically my first tournament I spent my time in bracket getting mad nervous and full hopping instead of WDing, spacing like ***, and generally being bad. Tournament play is like nothing else, so the longer you spend engaging in it, the better. So, it would follow that starting sooner rather than later would be good.

Also, definitely enter the bracket. While seriouslies are good, the pressure to perform that one is under while in bracket is very unique.

So yeah, do it.

Just enter more. the more you enter the better you get. If you lose, you'll feel salty and want to try harder.

This is the only way.

it is likely that, if you enter. . . unless you have iron determination you'll just be chain grabbed/tech chased/combo'd/gimped/edge guarded to the point that you don't even feel like playing melee again in your life.

proceed with caution.

start entering tournaments when you are comfortable controlling your character and can focus on learning and improving upon what you're doing wrong

most importantly ask everyone for advice, don't blindly take it, but store the info and apply it as you see fit

It's definitely worth it to go to tournaments. At each tournament you will gain experience whether you realize you're getting better or not. It's always a fun experience and will definitely add up in the long run. But yeah, wait until you feel comfortable with being able to maneuver your character.

it depends on how you learn. The way I learned the advanced techniques, entering tournaments was definitely the best way to go.

once you enter and get messed up in front of a large group of people, you'll be surprised how much better you'll get just to avoid the embarrassment again

Honestly the people who feel like that and don't feel like they can't wait for the next one / want to play 10x more aren't going to make it in the long run anyway IMO. Might as well weed out the people who aren't fit for smash the sooner the better.

me and 3 friends went to genesis for our first tournament. we're inconsistent at best with our tech stuff, and we went a combined 1 win and 27 losses (and that's in total sets).
best experience ever.

This totally just made me want to enter my first tournament. I know I'll get *****, but getting ***** would make me want to be the best 'cause I hate it when I lose.

All I mean is, if someone really enjoys playing the game casually, experiencing tournament level play might not be the best decision for them XD

But if you want to play casually then it shouldn't really matter if you go to a tourney and get ***** or don't go at all, since you're just a casual player.

just cause you play casually doesn't mean you like losing. Or, in this case, being ***** explicitly.

Competition: wanting to win or being happy with the effort you put into trying to win.

If you're casual you shouldn't complain about losing. If you want to win then either you are a competitive player or a huge ***. Pick one.

Omg, whatssup?! You guys going to the next Is This Tournament?

And yeah. I went to Genesis as my first tournament knowing how to perform all the advanced techs, but when it came down to using them in matches I had a huge mental block because I just wasn't used to playing people. (I play only cpus at home because my friends are stupid and dont play smash) So yeah. The sooner you start playing good people the better. Plus, there are usually nice people willing to help you out on all your other nooby habits.

I'd say just go and play rather than go and enter. save a bit of money. When youre new tournaments can sometimes boil down to "Lose $10 and play 2-5 matches" depending on pools/brackets.

If you just go and hang out you can get in a lot of practice in friendlies and you get to hang out with the coolest tournament crowed there is. Melee > all.

Tbh, I wouldn't recommend actually entering until you are comfortable with the basic techs and the general habits of your character. While tourney experience is valuable, getting destroyed when you can't even consistently wavedash or short hop isn't going to make you more comfortable the next time you enter. It only starts to help once you're past the point of worrying about tech skill and into the realm of worrying about decision making and execution of at least basic strategies under pressure. The only reason I would advise entering is a sort of initiation into the community. You can go to Smashfests and play, but playing in that first tournament and seeing how you stack up (which is pretty poorly for almost everyone when they start out lol) is an awesome experience. Perhaps enter one to get a feel for it and just go from there to decide if you want to keep entering or wait until you feel more prepared.

This. 100% this.

I'd recommend watching the actual tournament matches too, find out who the best players are and watch them play vs. the other besttx. watch them vs. the worst players, too. Advanced techniques (wavedash/lcancel) aren't nearly as important as advanced play style (spacing/reading/edge guarding/mix-ups...long list if I kept going).

You can have all the tech skill in the world and it won't amount to anything if you read like a children's book and are completely illiterate yourself. Unforutnately, getting out to tournaments/competitive events is the only way to sharpen this aspect of your gameplay. So, practice your wavedashing, your dash dancing, and your l-cancel's as hard as you can. Play stadium if you're up to it, ( to really cement control/timing/precision) and be prepared to lose cause you most likely won't be ready to win.

In the event that you do find yourself winning, I assure you, you're playing with the wrong people.

p.s. the last bit of advice I can leave you with: Nothing in the game is inherently bad (with a few exceptions). Things become bad when they are easy to punish, so people will generally shy away from things (falcon punch . . . side b . . .falcon kick. . rolling. . .side stepping) but there are always instances where these things have uses. .. maybe. . . its up to you.

Simple, just attend the tourney for fun, no need to actually participate in it, just practice while you are there though, you"'ll get lots of training from learning new AT's and also have fun at the same time while doing so.

Good luck. :)

The Louisiana scene has a very active melee community. You already saw the thread for our large tournament, but we also have state level tournaments at the end of every month in New Orleans. This month it's on break, since LasT Smash V is taking place. Attending tournaments is a very important step to becoming better, since you find individuals that are around [or significantly greater] your skill level. Smash is a game of imitation, and there are certainly more things to the game than just raw technical prowess.

The only way to meet people that can aid you to become better is to enter tournaments. Then you'll find individuals to train with which furthers your goal of doing well in events. Everyone in the La scene is incredibly helpful. Just don't be annoying. =)

So I was playing on a different TV today and noticed that I was messing some things up.

I couldn't play as fast as I usually do but it doesn't really make sense because I play on an LCD TV, but today I was playing on a cube TV yet it seemed like there was lag. It was really pissing me off because I would sometimes mess up my lasers, etc.

Does anyone else have this problem when playing on different TV's?

I've experienced that. You just need to adjust accordingly. Think of it as just shifting EVERYTHING over (either faster or slower) a few frames. Essentially, you have to play blind.

To quote Scar, "Tech skill is the foundation of the game. You won't be going anywhere anytime soon if you can't make your character do exactly what you want"

Something like that

my t.v is not necessarily HD. I just tuned it up to make it look like HD quality.
