It's sad when I want to choose a career that makes more money so I feel more secure if things get even worse over a career that I'd like more.
I'm fairly young('95er) but even I can see that this is hell and it'll most likely be worse for me. :<

I think it's funny how everyone expected Obama to use some magic powers and fix all our problems.

It doesn't work like that people.
I really wasn't sure whether to post this or not, because I'd hate to see this thread get off of what it originally was. I stand by my statement that it's the entire top of the social-economic pyramid's fault, not just Obama's. But:

When a democratic leader was able to talk our nation into believing he was more than your average politician is unable to convince a democrat-controlled Congress to do what he planned, he either:

Didn't plan anything for real.
Doesn't want to do anything.
Or is not that good, which Congress recognized and so now do their own thing.

I know we can't expect him to do everything, and I know I certainly don't. He's honestly just your average politician doing average politician things. But the fact that he promised so much, and people actually BELIEVED he would do all that stuff, is what irks me. He really didn't do much with his first 100 days in office, which are when presidents are really supposed to get a lot done with their popularity. And, he's still playing the blame game two years into his term.

So no, he's not magic or anything. But with all he has going FOR him, why doesn't he have more to his name by now?

I think we're caught up in too much emotional **** like "Save every impoverished child in the world" and "Stop genocide" and "Remove corrupt leaders from power" and "But it's so wrong on a moral level to do anything".
Honestly, focus on home, rebuild industry, stop these over sensitive idiots who think super trite and lame things that shouldn't matter are terrible.

I swear, nothing can be anyone's fault anymore.

This was so poorly articulated, I hope you get the gist.

Jam stunna wins again! My plan has been to make as many connections with extremely talented people in fields that, unlike mine, make lots of money. Come on engineering friends, get good jobs so I can mooch like a champ.

So far it's worked fairly well, sadly enough. As each one graduates they snag an amazing job which creates great connections!

Fun fact: I read any thread Jam makes or has the most recent post in. I'm like a pseudo stalker.

But really If you want it more than anything else you have more of a chance than the guy next to you.

Aw shucks!

@ Ganonsburg- I totally agree that Obama promised the entire universe and hasn't come close to that. I believed the hype as well, and I feel more than a little silly now that he's just another politician.

That said, he has managed to do some pretty huge things, not the least of which is the healthcare bill. You can't understate how important it is that soon, everyone must have health care, under penalty of law.

Your mother! :p yeah I guess I am old. I'm actually old enough to be the majority of posters here's parent. It's creepy when I sell butts and beer to people who I could be their daddy, I feel ancient, even though I'm "in my prime" heh.

Its likewise funny reading posts by people who grew up in the 2000's. It's also kinda interesting how even your generation has to identify with 2000's, can't just say 00's, lol. Then 10's. The 20's. The roaring 20's, just imagine what you kids will be like when you're my age.

You all have it so easy compared to the generations before you. And we had it easy compared to the generations before us.

When you were 4, Kurt Cobain was killing himself.

When I was 4, Vietnam had only just barely gotten over with.

The internet, to us it was new, something different. To you, it was normal. Expected. We had 64k RAM computers and thought it was "radical." You have internet IN THE CLASSROOM and think it's lame, cause of the ip firewall blocking your access to Maple Story.

We had cassette tapes playing in our sony walkmans. You have iPods "streaming" live content.

The comparisons are endless and the evidence of the original estimation of technology's inevitable exponential growth is absolutely realized. By the time I'm a grandfather and you yourselves are breeding the new generation, what I found to be marvelous technology will seem as antiquated as the cotton gin compares to the modern sewing machine.

Jam, this was a very good read. Thank you ^^
And yeah, I was born in '93 and I'm really glad that I'm not the only one who feels we got the short end of the stick. :p

We're not 12, we had cassettes, we had horrendous computers with dial-up for 15 minutes of internet a day, VHS and all.

Just because we went through that at 6 or so doesn't mean we can't remember and appreciate it lul.

True, there is definitely an age range of people who straddle the before internet and after internet time lines. These folks are in fact able to remember its creation and inception and usage woes. Kids born after the dot com boom, well they have no hope. But the slightly earlier generation, born between 1990-1995 would have been using the internet during that boom, which is right around the time the first large-scale ethernet networks were being put in place.

On a side note has anyone ever considered just how detrimental the internet explosion was on these kids? Had they been banned from using it (think, treating the internet as taboo like porn) what would it have been like? I know its a ridiculous notion, the information-exchange is too valuable a resource to argue that the internet is detrimental, but I see it coming at a great cost to our way of life as people. *shrug* it's not for me to nay-say it. I am as guilty as anyone. But something about what teran said struck me ...

I think the access to information the internet has provided our lot has caused us to become more educated and aware of many things before we were ever expected ready to.
Though it's.... fortunate that kids have access to such gigantic amounts of information, without proper regulation or supervision, the information they receive may be inaccurate. This can lead to ... well like some of the baseless opinions in this very thread regarding how "terrible" a job our president is doing. It's on one hand a great thing that opinions are forming in the minds of youth about serious subject matters but on the other hand these opinions could spiral way out of control, leading to entire movements of people (tea party anyone?). I'm not saying we need to crack down on the internet like China does, no way. Free speech all the way. And information dissemination is essential to a free and working society, and for trust between government and citizen. But I do think that kids get access to too much too quickly, it's the newest version of an ages-old gripe that kids grow up too quickly.

I don't like how this implies that adults are in some way less likely to make misinformed decisions and be ignorant.

I mean yeah children are less likely to understand a lot of things at first, but unlike most adults, their age allows them to be open minded and accepting of new concepts and ideas.

Once you're an adult you just don't give an inch, and so if you're pretty ignorant, you'll stay ignorant.

By "Alaska," I mean "out in the middle of the woods somewhere, away from humanity and living like a hermit."
This is actually, legitimately, what I dream to do. Maybe not in Alaska, but somewhere.

I was born in '89 so that I saw those changes like cassettes, walkman, then CDs, CD players and a long list.

at least this generation has the opportunity to study and get to college thanks to scholarships and other helps.

for example I am studying systems of information in computers( including networks and all that stuff) and I have a scholarship that will help me too to get my masters in the same kind of stuff.

Well, it can be a problem if people fail to receive the information they get with their eyes and ears and replace it entirely with digital information.

It's sort of like how modern people don't have the sensory perception that our ancestors had that let them survive in wilderness conditions.

And now people are driving into lakes because their GPS told them to.

There's ******* like this at any time in human history. I think you know this as well.

Also, I agree with Teran, though I assume he's not talking about youth like 10 year-olds, but more like 16-18 year old youth. I don't see how they are more likely to be misinformed than adults.

I think people were always that dumb. We just find new, exciting ways to do it.
Lol. There were some things Darwin just couldn't have foreseen.

I'm not sure either, but I can guess. When you don't have access to a lot of information, you use your experience to make judgment calls. When you come across new information, you check it against your experience. That's the old way.

Now more people have access to information. But they get at it at a younger age, when they don't necessarily have the experience to process it. In some ways online networking helps people communicate and get out more. But for others, it can be a crutch that delays them entering the real world. For the ones in this group, they encounter a lot of information, but they have very little experience to help them understand it.

I think a lot of kids are probably smart enough to figure it out on their own. But I do have a friend in the second category. He doesn't like to deal with people, so he spends all his time online. He talks like he knows something, but he's experienced almost none of the things he likes to talk about.

When I don't know something, I keep my mouth shut. The dangerous part about becoming someone like my friend is that you might think you know something when in fact you know nothing.

He and I might not be all that different. Sometimes I need to check myself too.

Blaming people young or old isn't going to get us anywhere, it's by acting we get things done. Yeah, we're screwed compared to what the last generation's situation was, but realizing that and acting is the only way we can improve.

We pretty much have to level a mountian with only our bare hands. It's gonna take years, if not generations, of people to do that, all the while not adding more **** onto the mountain.

I agree. Although I'm a bit younger than the demographic you referenced, I too feel like it's ridiculous that we have to deal with the repercussions of people who cannot use common sense or make smart decisions before us. Although those people exist in every generation, it seems like the generation before ours is more guilty than others of this.

I gotta make my dad sit through all of this, whoever made that video may be biased, but he/she sure as hell isnt wrong.

The key is making up qualifications on your resume.

The video isn't entirely true though. You do learn some good skills in college. For example, before last year I couldn't do a keg stand.

I say things have gotta get worse before they get better. As far as the environment, the scars'll be there forever unless we restart on a new planet/wait 8 trillion years. Culturally, we're doomed if we try and save the old. We're mixing too much, and it just gets harder and harder to embrace the ways of yesterday simply for the sake for keeping it alive. 'Sept for the music. Hip Hop has gotta go. Economically, i'd put my money (pun completely intended) on the fact that money has failed. I don't think the world economy is doomed, i think that money in general has outlasted itself. Whatever that means. We need a new system, or a completely clean slate for the old one.

I hate how being a kid gets better every decade while being an adult gets worse every decade.

Toys have gotten more awesome. You can keep connected with your friends better. Cartoons kind of suck but I am sure they will get better again.

The Baby Boomer situation just plain sucks. The problem is that society never really thinks about what is coming next. It is almost about the here and now. A generation has to be selfless and ask themselves what are the consequences of our actions 10 to 20 years from now.

I also hate how more and more people are supporting redistribution of wealth. Also, I think the generation coming of voting age believes they are open minded when they are liberalistically close minded.
