The effects fell all over the place and the colors don't really go together. Change the color a bit and make sure they all go in one direction. Armaldo is hardly blended in. Maybe add something that makes armaldo not seem like he's floating (a shadow or something). Good for a first, though.

Yes, an abundance of layers were used but only to keep certain elements separate (background, penguin, neon lights, etc.) since the layers act sort of like a folder for different shapes and such. So, in the penguin "layer" there was a sub-layer for the black portion of the head, the orange part of the beak, the orange part of the neck, white part of it's belly, etc. Each of those individual shapes are on their own sub-layer in one single "layer" that makes up the whole penguin. The penguin was created using the pentool and either flat fills or gradient fills of color.

Heh. It's from Mirror's Edge. There are multiple times where you're in an elevator, waiting, and on the side is a scrolling digital news thing with two different reports. I think twice in the elevator you see one with the headline "The newest threat to children: RUNNING." My avatar is one of these cases.
In context, it makes sense -- because "running" is carrying information on the rooftops, like you are doing in the game. But out of context it sounds like just moving quickly is hazardous to children, and I found that really funny so I made it my avatar.

At first, the Sig Contest was actually DWYP, only for the AE boards. It died quickly. Very quickly. By changing it to a sig contest, at least it won't go completely to waste.
A few reasons for that.
1) The AE doesn't like art. They like sigs.
2) General Brawl discussion gets at least 200 times as many views a day as the AE.
3) The AE doesn't like art, they like sigs!
