    I used to say something similiar, like, how is being in love with a celebrity any different than being in love with a fictional character? It's just as likely you'll meet them, let alone have a relationship with them. I guess you could meet them by accident or at a specific setting at some point, but it's mostly the same a lot of the time.

    I hate how it's become a meme for tv manufacturers to make their game mode colors really blue for no reason. No one asked for this as far as I know and it sucks that not every tv has the ability to turn off their processing outside of the game mode. It's not like I want to be forced into an arbitrary trade between accurate colors and a quality competitive gaming experience.

    Yeah, I guess they decided that was the "gamer" aesthetic. It's especially noticeable on my new tv, more so than my old one. But I'm used to accurate colors and usually pick my monitors with that in mine, so I might be more sensitive to it than others.

    And yeah, it definitely does reduce lag. From what I've heard my particular tv (LG C9) is on par with most esports tier monitors. I'll test it tomorrow with that link and see how much.

    Funny story, I feel like an ass because I super styled on them, and then the game decided to kick me out because HEY YOU'RE ON ELITE NOW. What is that dumb thing they do where they decide to kick you out of battles? It's so, so so so dumb. I usually play these people a few matches, unless there's considerable lag (which, there wasn¿t).

    Yeah, it's pretty silly that they even had a barrier like that in the first place. It really screws up the ranking system and makes it take much more wins to get over that last 100,000 or so, because you are locked in to only fighting people lower than you pretty much. And then you get thrust immediately into a fight with someone over a million more than you do and can get kicked back out pretty quickly. I literally bopped in and out with Bowser like 15 times in a row before I managed to stabilize my GSP. I'd two stock anyone in the normal part and then get put into an incredibly laggy match in Elite.

    It was stupid and they should have made Elite a title instead of a separate mode.

    I literally never encounter Zelda on wifi. Even the few times I was on Elite, I barely see her. Most I see are stuff like K.Rool, Ganondorf, Link, Terry and Samus. Stuff like that. I only played two Zeldas this week, and that's actually very rare.

    There's the most hideous players at 7m+. Every last K.Rool I encountered were virtually clones of one another.
    I'm sure if you know basic neutral and some combos here and there, you're already a lot better.

    As I feared, the ranking system naturally lets these types rise to the top with the absence of filters or any sort of standards.

    Got Byleth 7.2m without any stupid tricks or camping, just playing like I do, even amidst the horrors of wifi and suffering. Played a pretty decent Mario/Banjo in the last ones, and the matches felt pretty tasteful in spite of some lag.

    Got some cool clips. Been labbing Byleth's Up B pretty hard.

    Good stuff, but the true horror is when you get above that. I played this Zelda with the tag of Scotty earlier and he was teleporting through ****. Not with Farore's Wind but actually looked like would would teleport and I couldn't even see him move sometimes. I beat him once and then he started teabagging left and right lol. Had I not been rusty I still would have beaten him more, but it was really something.

    I think I'm done with this game again for a while. I just started playing to test my tv and now I don't want to touch it again.

    Played exactly one ****ty Zelda yesterday, and I felt insulted at how bad he used her.

    Yesterday I expressed my distaste about the whole issue with this so called "virus". I stopped believing it like a month ago, and I went on to try and share a few videos with people explaining my reasoning. It bugs me that no one seemed to have even bothered to watch them, when the reasoning is perfectly laid out, and even far more reasonable than just mainstream media bombarding you about how many people are infected and dying.

    Whether you believe I'm wrong or not, being able to see for yourself and open your mind for a couple of minutes doesn't pose an actual risk on it's own right. It's not like I'm encouraging people to go lick toilets.

    Let it be known that I don't actually encourage people to go against this by risking potential health issues. Whether you believe in it or not, you can still follow the quarantine rules that's been given (which where I live, is part of the law).

    And that’s where I do think some boundaries have been overstepped. For good reason but overstepped regardless. Here in Japan, even Tokyo has the highest amount of cases, nothing is closed down save for bars, pubs, small eateries, karaoke clubs, night clubs, etc. Schools are open for kids to come study with block segments but classes don’t open for another week. Still, even though it’s not required by law, people are still social distancing, avoiding crowded places, and staying home even though the emergency declaration was lifted across the country with many places now open. If I was to host a party with 50 people, I wouldn’t get in trouble. However, the community would view me, my family, my workplace, and those attended with distrust and suspiciousIon and, considering I live in ritual Japan, my family’s reputation and “honor” being broken to the community would be akin to getting in trouble with the law. We would be ostracized but that’s Japan and that’s why a lot of people are thinking. Not “How would I get in trouble with the law” but “How would my neighbors, work, and friends view me if I went against the cultural norm?” As they say here, the nail that sticks up the highest gets nailed down the hardest and, at times, pulled out and thrown away. My family and I went to a Taiwanese restaurant we like and we were their first customers in 4 days despite being open and offering discounts on lunch sets. I do think it’s time to start reopening stuff; gradually and carefully regardless if there was a virus or not. Hopefully, in due time, things come to light and we can have a better picture on what exactly happened. Might take a decade tho lol.

    Today, for the first time in two months, I played offline with my friend.

    I forgot I could Parry. I consistently parried, and even conciously parried stuff like Ganondorf's FSmash and Utilt.

    Yesterday I kept encountering lame campy players on Omegas reaching the 7m mark. It was absolutely ****ing miserable, and it felt like a huge waste of time. There was even a ****ty K.Rool that did it. It was miserable, and I have a hard time believing these people are doing it for "fun". It just makes matches last a lot longer than they have to, and at the end of the day there's no sense of victory from even beating people like this.

    Played Ultimate on my new OLED tv. It supposedly is on par if not better than most esports monitors. I've always kind of wondered if the whole monitor thing was a competitive meme or not. It turns out I didn't do that much better and the tv really exposed how horrible Ultimate is. It took me a bit to adjust but even after I did, it still felt worse to play. The better response time had me pressing buttons earlier I think and that really showed how laggy Ultimate is.

    I'll need to try it on an actually decent competitive game to really see if there's a difference, but I'm hooked on the remaster of the first Resident Evil.

    What is that thing you say about Zelda's "acceleration". Is there like some kind of speed she gains at the start of a jump or dash? I notice that Byleth has some sort of initial speed increased when you run up and RAR.

    The initial dash speed or air speed after a jump is what I'm probably talking about. Zelda's is roughly on par with most top tiers and is generally above average. If you dash into a run or jump into aerial DI you can see a dramatic drop off in speed compared to what it was initially. That's because her run speed or aerial acceleration is poor in comparison.

    I'm usually touting how much this helps her preempt and punish. And why foxtrotting is pretty much the only real way to move with Zelda on the ground. And how you can quickly dash back and punish or move forward and stuff an approach.

    Byleth's initial dash seems to be better than her run speed, so maybe that's what you are noticing.

    Byleth’s initial dash is in the 1.8 range, while Zelda’s is 1.9+. I notice this when he does like a mix of initial dash+jump, maybe when you RAR and he does like this slide that speeds him up a little.

    Not sure if I’m imagining things.

    Well a RAR is virtually a turnaround jump so you probably are still carrying the momentum from the initial dash.

    S StoicPhantom that's what I was trying to say is that Daisy or Peach might be hard to learn how to play on a competitive level. Though that could be a lot of characters though. I have a easier time mastering most of the heavyweights compared to most of the medium or lightweight characters on the roster.

    But her combos alone are just at another level. Everything else will just fall naturally, but her combos make up a big part of her character. If I could at least do them naturally and without having to think, everything else would be far easier.

    The top 100,000 GSP has a mix of character mains that know what they are doing and some of the most horrifying connections you will ever see. It's probably the only range where you will ever see a competent Ken or similarly uncommon character. It's definitely a step above the rest of QP, but I don't know how often you will run into actual top players. It's been pretty rare I ever see someone known or that's even definitively better than I am.

    I got to the point where I could somewhat do Float cancel Nair, but never managed to pull it off in an actual match. I think you need turnips to really make it true but I don't know honestly. Or maybe they are mixups in the first place.

    I think they're true, even if it doesn't show. They're probably off by a Frame or 2, at best. Most characters wouldn't be able to airdodge or jump out of that, either way. I saw a Peach main do it in Training and she also doesn't get the "true" mark after the Dtilt, so I assume I'm not entirely off.

    One of the first tries I get the first four hits confirmed as "true", but the last one I get the 4 last hits.

    Played this DK earlier at the Arenas. I played him a couple of times before, and he's actually pretty much the best DK I've seen. Thing is, I have a suspision his attitude isn't. I played him one match, and it was really even, but then I kill myself at like 30 on my last stock and he wins by 2 stocks at like 120-130. Dude just leaves, and it annoyed me a lot. That's the kind of attitude you give someone you just 3 stocked, and even then, it's uncalled for.

    I took it very personally, and I asked a friend from Chile, says he knows of him and that he's from over there as well. He says he's an unpleasant person and has bad sportsmanship as a player, so that it's apparently normal (and this coming from a 14 year old kid, who plays really well).

    Fastforward like half an hour later, and the guy shows up at my Arena, and the guy shows up at my Arena again. So now, at like 4 a.m and no one is around you want to play me? Nope. Kick.

    It's understandable. I played this Sonic a few days ago as Hero and he pretty much only spammed B. He kept teabagging whenever I lost a stock and it was clearly the character not the player. I ended up getting really close to beating him on the runback and he promptly left with a "peace". It really annoys me when someone acts all high and mighty and then obviously leaves from fear of being put in their place and still tries to play it off like they aren't doing that.

    I had a similiar experience earlier. There was this G&W that kept taunting after every kill. I don't know know what the hell was that about, but it seems to me he was butthurt I kicked his ass in the last match. If you need input delay to barely get the upper hand (when I'm playing like ****), then it was clear to me he was butthurt.

    It's cute that he thinks spamming smash attacks like Maister will work on me.

    You pretty much need constant practice with a particular character in order to maintain Elite status. I notice nowadays that whenever I play a character I've had in Elite for a while I end up getting kicked out pretty quickly and it takes a long time of playing them to get back in. Unless it's a character I'm very familiar with like Robin or Zelda I don't stay in for very long without constant playtime. My Lucina is now somewhat stable for instance, but my Cloud is pretty stagnant at 6.8 or wherever he is at.

    Doesn't even have to do with that. It's literally just the lag at this point. I only feel like I legitimately lost to one good Link player (who's from over here), and even then I still blame lag. Some of these matches I outright forfeit because I'm not one of those miserable people that just stick around, in fear of not losing points.

    That's what I meant. Elite is a special combination of lag and somewhat decent fundamentals that you have to have practice at dealing with it for each character. Fundamentals don't really carry over. Pretty much an example of why being good offline doesn't mean you are good online and vice versa.

    The first two matches I played against this Peach fellow made me realise I was respecting him too much. I "got" 2 stocked the first match, and they would last like a minute longer than usual (which is like 4 minutes for me), and I couldn't get any strong hits on him. Up B and Kick would constantly sourspot, and I would keep getting hit by whatever. That bothered me, and that's when I started being more aggressive and thinking less, and it went far better.

    I put quotation marks on that because there's sometimes a dumb trend where stuff like that happens against people that weren't really doing anything to make that happen. If anything, it just feels like I'm doing something very stupid for that to happen, and it's never a one thing you can just point the finger at. When that happens, it's always me doing something wrong rather than the others doing something right.

    I was under 134k with Zelda earlier this morning (not even kidding). I made it to 6.8m just now, and I would've kept going if it wasn't late and the fact some ****ty Ken "beat" me with his 1 stock ruleset. All the times I loss (literally, every single one of them) was because I killed myself practicing the usual, though it definitely improved.

    I was under 200k for like a month, it just wasn't motivating. Numbers don't go anywhere at those low scores, and it takes like 10 matches just to get to 1m, and then things start speeding up.

    I know what you mean. My Bayo is still around 500k and it's hard to get that moving. For some reason I can't win with that character at all online. She's the only one I have anywhere near that range, but holy **** is it hard to do well with her.

    For starters, you have to at least be able to learn her combos. I'm not necessarily assuming you don't, but at least that already covers have her game, because she does 100 in like 10 seconds. I see a lot of people do them, so they can't be too complicated. The other half is probably getting good at kills, because she only really seems to kill off of stray Smash attacks, Witch time or Bair (which looks like a good move). Then there's situation 0 death/low percent kill combos, which I'm not sure how they really work.

    She's actually kind of badass, and I like the kind of stuff good players do with her. She's just weird for me, and I didn't even bother in Smash 4.

    I did spend a while learning her combos one day, but I can't do them online at all. It's like when I tried to learn Ryu's command inputs but way worse. Maybe if I spend a lot of time trying it will work like it kind of did from Ryu, but it is pretty not fun to play her in this game. Not just combos, but her hitboxs don't really work and are very wonky. When my opponent is not falling out of them, I'm chasing them around the stage while they're at 170 or so.

    I find overall that I don't like playing characters that don't kill early. Bair, Dair, and basically Fthrow are the only real kill moves on this character that aren't smash attacks. You could edgeguard but I constantly SD when I try to do that lol.

    What is it about Ultimate, that brings the worst out of me? It's just a game about adorable characters "fighting" each other, and it's cartoony and it's not even meant to be serious.

    I've been trying to improve and play competitively since the end of 2011, but it's not like I did all that much. I'm not a noticeable player by world standards, and my best accomplishments is only winning one tourmament in Smash 4 at 2016. Other than that, just a couple of Top 8s or Top 5 at some locals, but I do aspire to be much better than this, and eventually making a name to known.

    And it is a form of personal achievement at the end of the day, even if I can just get a clip or two.

    I feel like it's more obnoxious and the mechanics are inferior to previous games. Imo the worst aspects of Smash are the dodge mechanics that feel like crutches more than tools and the lack of movement options. It feels like Ultimate exacerbated these aspects and threw out a lot of the good aspects of Smash 4. Airdodge cancels have got to be the worst idea since Smash 4 Rage. I feel like what makes Melee so well liked is that it emphasized movement and spacing over this current era of mashing and dodging. Something you would think a less movement restricted franchise like Smash would take advantage of, but we seem to be moving in the opposite direction.

    I hate to sound elitist, but it kind of feels like Ultimate got dumbed down somewhat. I don't like how lenient tech windows have become and stage spike kills have become a thing of the past at even mid level. Spotdodges also have become more obnoxious and it's annoying when people spam spotdodge canceled smash attacks.

    Then you have things like the buffer system and the inability to turn off the short hop macro that hampers not helps more advanced players. I feel like I die more times to a unintentional buffer than the opponent themselves. Not to mention how a lot of multi-hits don't seem to work well. It just feels clunky and uncertain.

    Not saying other games didn't have their fair share of flaws, but this game leaves me feeling robbed and/or stupid much more than the other ones do. Which might explain why it feels more frustrating.

    I feel you hit the nail, there. I say this, because in this game more than any other, I get beaten my worse people all the time (at least online). It's like, the better I get, the more precision I need to do stuff, and I keep doing stuff I didn't even want to from the mix of lag and the big buffer window. I shouldn't have to compromise my playing style and skill by playing worse and more simple just to win playing online. This is why it annoys me that basically every other Zelda online does far better than me, and I know it has nothing to do with actual skill.

    A couple of my friends had similiar concerns about the game, saying it feels a lot easier to pick up, and that they removed things that seperated good players from bad ones (such as actually foxthrotting and perfect pivoting). It seemed like silly concerns to me at first, but maybe they were right, to an extent.

    I also think it's silly when you basically have a garanteed punish at catching an airdodge, but they just tech, remain invincible and then they can punish you (happens sometimes).

    SC the first kept the Japanese voices, so it’s hard getting used to the dub.

    I played III, V, and am going to be playing VI if my finger ever heals. I'm hoping it's at the point that I won't exacerbate it now.

    I started with the dub in III but honestly went sub immediately in VI. I've watched enough subbed anime over the years that it's generally my preference now. And relatively niche games like SC tend to have iffy voice acting in their dubs.

    In my case, it had nothing to do with anime, since I had the game since I was 7 (back in 2002). It's the only SC game I played for years, and the voices were just too natural and stuck to me. Siegfried's voice actor was the same one who played Link in OoT.

    I was getting really fed up with the online bull****, as usual. Then I just decided to go on Discord, even though it was like 5 a.m. Played a guy from Chile, I think. He was pretty damn solid, kicking my ass with Byleth until I switched Zelda and he kicked my ass some more.

    Then I started tomohawking because I'm not stupid and you can't just beat me by sitting and shield and expecting to punish my aerials on shield.

    Then I just kind of adapted and it wasn't that pretty for him.

    I remember when I went to the U.S in 2016 (Florida), I went to an out of region tournament. I did pretty iffy (2-2), but the experience was absolutely wonderful. I got to see Ryo again (saw him in Orland for Come to Papa) as well as Myran. I rematched Ryo at friendlies and took his Roy to Game 5, almost took it too.

    A kid that beat me was asking if I was sandbagging in bracket. He wouldn't think to match Ryo, but he was surprised he somehow managed to beat me.

    I think you should main a badass fast character with combos like Pikachu, Chrom or Cloud. They really take out the guessing factor out of certain things, and it's mostly a matter of just spacing right.

    They also don't struggle killing, unlike something like Sheik. They have disjoints and mobility. Pikachu's essentially the closest thing to a perfect character.

    Yesterday I played the ****test DDD in the world. The guy kept trying to ledge camp by using all his Jokes going high and throwing Gordo.

    Remind me of the amount of people that take this ****ty mode seriously and expect me to do so.
