  • So apparently Sega is dropping Sonic Adventure 3 hints, now more explicit than ever.
I can't believe this. I want to believe that this is some kind of prank, so Sega can say next year "Screw you, Sonic Forces 2, baby!" but no this has to be real. Everything has led up to this-the Adventure remixes, the Adventure artwork, the many Adventure memes they posted, not to mention the hefty amount of rumors...
This might be happening. If it is, I couldn't be more excited.

Wait sonic adventure 3 is a possibility?

    Always has been...
In reality though, they released a Station Square remix late last year, and ever since it's been Sonic Adventure art, Sonic Adventure memes, and Sonic Adventure music coming out of Sonic Twitter. Same thing they did with Classic Sonic leading up to Mania. So yes, it's highly likely Sonic Adventure 3 would come out.

SEGA has been having a good year so far, so I wouldn't be surprised if they announced something as big as Sonic Adventure 3.
"In the Archie comics, Sonic's real name is revealed to be Olgilvie Maurice Hedgehog. He tries desperately to protect that information, possibly out of embarrassment."
Sonic comics are a whole other world. Considering what I've seen from it as an outsider, though, this just scratches the surface. Maybe I should make an Archie Sonic iceberg...

They're fun, if admittedly super weird in the pre-Ian Flynn era. I would definitely recommend them if you're interested in an expanded take on Sonic.

Be warned, though: Some of the art before Flynn's era was...Unique, lol.

I read that one where Knuckles turned into some evil villain with a mask and the echidna elder told Sonic to execute him.
    MooMew64
    MooMew64
That one was one of the first major stories Ian wrote, if I'm remembering correctly. It's one of my personal favorites, it took a lot of the weird echidna lore the series had and applied it in a more cohesive and interesting story.

Fun fact: The echidna who told Sonic to kill Knuckles was Knuckles' dad, lol.
As much as I love classic sonic, his gameplay style is very defined at this point, whereas Modern has been stumbling since 1999. Some great games, but that doesn’t diminish the fact that they haven’t found an ideal formula for him yet. I really hope Sonic Team’s putting their all into the next 3D Sonic game, with some enhanced ports and a possible Mania 2 for Classic fans like myself (I love all gameplay styles, favorite being Classic). But the longer Modern Sonic is struggling, the more Sega uses the Genesis style games as a crutch to hold up Sonic as a whole-which in turn prevents both Sonics from evolving.

I wish they just stuck with the daytime Unleashed/Colours/Generations style of gameplay. That seemed to consistently work well for them, and I don't get why they changed it for Lost World and Forces.

I'm not saying they should never do it again, but that 2D works so much better for Sonic. They definitely can make a really good 3D game, but they'd have to stick with what they've done right with past good 3D games, and greatly improve upon it without feeling incredibly buggy. Recent 3D games have ranged from mediocre-disastrous, which is why I thought of sticking to 2D, but they definitely can do it with the right people. Good point.
    Janx_uwu
    Janx_uwu
RealPokeFan11 RealPokeFan11 Well if they stick to 2D then it'd be very restrictive for the games, if Mario can work in 3D and 2D there's no reason Sonic shouldn't. Like I said, right ideas and the right people are all it needs, plus longer dev time. I want a world in which both styles can live in harmony, and by Sega releasing Forces and Mania in the same year tells me they want to do that, but haven't gotten there just yet. I think the opposite, really-if we stick to 3D we can finally get a consistently good 3D gameplay style, whereas sticking to 2D, while it is very good, means the 3D games will be lacking because of it.
A perfect example of this is Forces. Not only is it filled with 2D sections in a 3D game, but it also has Classic Sonic as a whole other character, with little effort put into either of these things. They were only made for nostalgia pandering, which is in no way a good thing. As a result the 3D sections suffered. Really I don't think they would've been very good at all considering they had few (and not great) level designers not to mention a director who wanted a gameplay style simpler than Classic. But you get the idea.
As long as they work hard and get better staff they can achieve a consistently good 3D style, not saying 2D games can't come out during this transitional period but 3D should be the focus so that, as a result, both styles can be good.
If Jonesy got into Smash I'd be totally cool with it. I played the game mid 2019, had fun with it, and set it down when I got bored. But the game itself is oozing with charm, and it has a large playerbase for a reason-it's free, it's fun, it's addicting, it's easy to play and tough to master, and it's constantly being updated so that returning players stay entertained. If they get in Smash not only will I be happy for the younger crowd who can have a character they can immediately recognize, but also in terms of gameplay because having a character that can build pre-made structures and has projectiles sounds really fun to play as and against, in both casual and competitive environments.

So a popular video game collaborating with famous people, and other forms of media is a bad thing? And regarding the community, yes it's pretty bad, but the developers don't control who plays their game, or how their players act. The most developers can do is add a report button, or some sort of "good behavior" system like Overwatch did. Don't forget that many Smash pro players were recently exposed for committing disgusting crimes, so your argument that the community being bad is the entire reason why a character shouldn't happen is ridiculous. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions when it comes to games, but the way you've been acting towards this whole thing is silly. I learned this the hard way with the Sans support thread back in 2018.

@psb123 at least we know about it now and can permaban them and set up rules to prevent future abuse. But yeah, having a few select ppl represent an entire community is BS.
Steve really does seem to excel at everything-the main weakness will probably be remembering to use all of your tools when appropriate, so kind of like Shulk.
Sora Ltd. is a one-man company, which I didn't know before.
Balance changes are sometimes made through Sakurai playing with coworkers at lunch (pre-COVID). Interesting.
    That's a tiny jump.
    Wow, those taunts are amazing!
They did an awesome job giving Steve what is effectively five special moves.
Brawl Meta Knight up b is back now, I guess.
Minecart's gonna cheese people out so dang much.
Wait, my opponent can counterpick Smashville and I'll mine mainly wood? Darn, well at least it's a cool gimmick, and that means Lylat Cruise and Kalos are good stage picks for Steve.
Fair and bair look extremely good.
Sakurai has a diamond sword! I don't know why I find that so funny!
Wait, his down air consumes iron? Trash.
Wait, his down air can be canceled? Awesome.
(Did they not show his neutral air or am I just losing my mind?)
Oh, can I make a sand sword? (probably not)
Wow that block placement has no limit? Sweet!
inaudible screaming as Sakurai does a down smash offstage
inaudible screaming intensifies as I realize you can use block for landing and recovering

They HAVE to be top tier.
Oh wow they did such an amazing job with the stage!
I'm not a huge Minecraft music buff but I like the tracks I'm hearing!
Finally, special mii costumes for Brawler!
    Nice, diamond armor!
    What's that sword guy from?
Big no comment as Travis appears soon after
Thirteenth isn't super close but I can wait.
    Wow, that was some presentation.
So, I can quite literally prevent my opponent from grabbing ledge.
    Woah.
Gotta say, I thought Steve was gonna be good after the reveal trailer, but now this? Oh, I think he's better than I imagined.
Guys I found it! I finally found an opinion no one can get mad about! clears throat

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is a video game for the Nintendo Switch.
Look, I'm fed up with the Steve hate, so here are my final thoughts on the whole thing.

Nintendo put a character from the best selling game of all time into their videogame about the most popular video game series. That's a smart move, and CP7 will get hundreds of thousands, possibly millions of downloads, not to mention new purchases of the game.
Said it once, I'll say it again-There are billions of people who love this franchise and are happy to see him in Smash. I'm sorry your character didn't get in and I wish them luck going forward. Direct hate on Steve and his fans, and whether or not he deserves a fighter slot, will not solve anything except make more people mad. Minecraft, whether you like it or not, deserves to be in Smash, and with the relationship Nintendo and Microsoft have, it was gonna happen any day now.
    So get over it.
Ok, last profile post about all this. I'm exhausted.

If anyone has actually, unironically said “What’s next, Fortnite?!” To criticize Steve’s addition... just stop
    Janx_uwu
    Janx_uwu
The fact that Ultimate's inclusions have been all over the place means really anyone could be next. Fortnite, Crash, Sonic, Mario, first party or third party, indie or triple A-no matter who it is it'll be completely out of left field.
So I guess Sonic is the strongest canonical character now. On top of breaking the sound barrier at Mach speeds, becoming invincible and super strong in his many transformations, and killing various gods with said transformations...
He can punch you into an entirely different universe.
Phoenix Wright is one of my most wanted, but I haven't played any of the games, so why do I want him? Simple: his moveset would be hilarious, kind of like Villager (we already have some stuff to build off of thanks to MvC). His overall inclusion would just be great.
You didn't lose to the demon king-killing hero of time.
You didn't lose to Mr. Videogame himself.
You didn't lose to a space fox with high tech gear.
You didn't lose to the fastest thing alive.
    You didn't lose to a god-killing puffball.
No...you lost to...a student of the law.
Just imagine the taunts! Maybe his Final Smash would just have him prove why his opponent is guilty, before landing them in jail. Hilarious. He would easily be one of the most insulting characters to lose to-especially if he's a low tier.

If we do get him, I hope his reveal trailer is him defending Mario in court over the Mario Sunshine incident in a reference to the beginning of that game. That would only add to the hilarity.

Damn, Mario has not had a good last few years. Stabbed in the back by Ridley, blown up by a Creeper, and now is being accused of numerous illegal activities on Delfino Isle.

    Poor man.
To those of you mad about his reveal: Steve was inevitable. Nintendo and Microsoft had great relations, probably just as good as Nintendo and Sega at this point. Minecraft is on Switch. Minecraft is the most popular and best-selling game ever. It inspired a generation of gamers-one I was lucky to be a part of. Smash is a crossover of gaming's biggest icons:by that logic alone, Steve is a must for Smash.
I understand if you feel underwhelmed-Minecraft is definitely not the game for everyone. But if you're mad about something that was going to happen from the start, whether it be this game or Smash 6 or it even could've happened in the Sm4sh DLC-I pity you. He deserves to be in Smash, from an objective point of view. He has amazing moveset potential, he's extremely popular, he's a gaming icon, Nintendo already was very familiar with the IP-it was just gonna happen any day.
Four more to go. And if they're as crowd-pleasing as Steve, I guarantee you'll get something you like. Trust me, I was fuming after Byleth's reveal, and it's a moment I'm not proud of, especially as I sit on the other side of that fence today. Best if we just appreciate the lengths Sakurai went to to make this happen and go about our days.
(In terms of gameplay though? Yeah, he'll probably be busted. I don't blame you for raging at that).

Not only that, but we already have a very mainstream character that also incorporates building into their respective games. Completely different characters, but the similarities they do have makes me think he's not coming this pass.
If he is though...Smash Ultimate will probably be one of the best selling games of all time. I'm not even joking. Imagine the crowds of youngsters walking into tournaments, Jonsey mains through and through-that image is awesome and terrifying at the same time.

I have no issues with Jonesy. I'd be completely cool with it. Fortnite is in the exact same position as Minecraft was about 1-2 years ago. (Hated due to its sheer popularity and community) Its not the game's fault, every game is gonna have toxic people in its community, and sadly there's not much you can do about it from a development standpoint. Eventually, just like Minecraft, Fortnite will get out of this "cringy kids game" phase that the Internet perceives it as. Also, the game's rated T for Teen, so it's not inappropriate for Smash. If Minecraft can get in when under these circumstances, Fortnite probably can as well. What matters is Nintendo + Sakurai's plans, and approval from Epic Games.
    let's go
Great, now all of the ads I'm getting are from flash game sites advertising "free" versions of Minecraft.
    Two possible outcomes from today:
Either Master Chief is deconfirmed, or Master Chief is a lock for fp2.
I predict he'll be a Mii Costume revealed on Saturday.
Okay. There is hate and it is there.
    I shall let it be.
Today, I focus not on the haters.
I focus on the fact that this is REAL, one of my favorite videogames and a game that's a huge part of my childhood is represented in SMASH, and that is an amazing thing. I love how accurate the animations are to the characters and the game, it's awesome.
Sakurai's Minecraft world is actually pretty dope.
Time to go to the Minecraft support thread. I want to start labbing pre-release.
I want to know how Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle became a thing.
"Let's make a strategy shooter game with Mario crossing over with the Rabbids." It's like the most unorthodox idea for a video game crossover I've heard in a long time, probably since Marvel vs Capcom.
That doesn't stop it from being one of my favorite Switch exclusives though.

Great, now we just need a horror game, skateboarding game, flying simulator and traditional fighting game. Hmm, what are some other ones...

I've got it. Mario MMORPG. Mario VR. Mario: Battle Royale. Mario visual novels.
Really, you could slap Mario's name on just about anything and people will buy it.
PSA: If you bully someone over the internet, there is no excuse-you are in the wrong. I don't care what their political beliefs are, or what they do for a hobby/job. Going out of your way to hurt someone because of these things is childish-it's stabbing a sleeping bear.
Sorry, I just had an online class today and I was shocked by the amount of classmates who openly admitted to doing this. Frustrated me quite a bit, needed to write something in response.
If I were ever to direct a sequel to Subspace, I'd probably settle a few things right out the gate:
Make the environments more similar to iconic videogame worlds. We had a few like the Halberd, but more would be great-deserts and forests were cool but bland.
Give every character a purpose. Sonic's scene was cool, but he kinda got snubbed with his screen time-same for TL, Wolf, and Jigglypuff.
Pick it up a few years or so after the original story.
Include more iconic enemies (Mets from Megaman, Bokoblins from Zelda, all kinds of Pokemon, Ghosts from PAC-MAN, all sorts of Eggman's robots from Sonic, etc)
Make some of the levels a little less maze-like.
Have a little more voice acting to add some spice-"Kept you waiting, huh?" is one of my favorite lines in videogames, and I don't even know what a Metal Gear Solid is.
Finally, include an RPG system, where you get stronger as you go on. This would make every collectible feel that much more important and give more reason to fight instead of running away. You could even choose to have a skill tree or Spirits like WoL (though Spirits would have to be balanced a bit so you don't just power through every enemy effortlessly).
I'll get some flack for this, but I really couldn't care less about the environments in 2D Mario. Grass, Dessert, Ice, Beach/Forest, Lava. They've all blended together and at this point (unless we're talking about 64 or Odyssey) I don't care about the Mushroom Kingdom or its surrounding areas. Even the ghosts houses, generally very unique environments, have become bland and uninspired, using the same design since SMW. I would really like to see some variety in the worlds these games put out. They've made some short lived attempts, which I appreciate, and those end up being some of my favorite levels of the bunch. If and when Nintendo makes a 2D game that isn't Mario Maker, I really hope they try something new for the environments, and maybe even the gameplay, considering it's stayed mostly the same since the first New game.
Sorry about bashing on these games. I love them, I really do. I just want to get excited about their worlds again, the way I got excited about Odyssey's kingdoms.

That's the problem with the NSMB series really. Everything's the same. Plot: Bowser captures Peach. Levels: As you mentioned. Bosses: Koopalings, who are samey in one game, let alone 3. Plot twist: Bowser gets big. Characters: Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Toads, Peach, Bowser, Jr., Koopalings, 1 Mini Boss, Enemies. I just hope 1: the next 2D game is different, and 2: future 3D games don't suffer the same fate
    Janx_uwu
    Janx_uwu
Yeah. I don't have a problem with the first four games nearly as much, since it was just starting up (1, 3 and World). But besides the graphical overhaul and a couple of new power ups, it's the same Mario. Not that the base formula of those games should change, but they've done the bare minimum to keep it slightly interesting. New characters, stages, gimmicks, plots, etc. would really help, like you said. It's become this thing where they lean on their original 2D games to keep them afloat. Well, at least that doesn't keep the 3D games from evolving, unlike some other franchise I know.

I'll do YOU one better: High-Speed trilogy mentioned above releases about the same time as Sonic Jam 2, sans Chaotix and with 3D Blast added (giving the option to have a homing attack at all times that can be turned off). Sonic Gems 2 comes out later, with Chaotix, Chaos, Triple Trouble, Segasonic The Hedgehog, R, The Fighters, and Blast.
Next year we get the Boost Trilogy (Unleashed, Colors, Generations) plus later on the GBA collection (Advance 1, 2, 3, Battle). DS collection later on (Rush trilogy). Finally to top it all off, a Dark Ages collection (Shadow, Riders, 06, Storybook games). Obviously some of these collections would be priced more or less depending on the games and how much of an improvement they are over the originals.
This is never gonna happen, but man, imagine being able to play all of Sonic's history on your switch.

On the subject of 2nd Sonic character speculation in Ultimate, here are my thoughts:
Shadow is my most wanted, and his odds certainly aren't bad. He's the second most popular character in the franchise and, at least from what I've seen, the most highly requested Sonic character. He's also Takashi Iizuka's (head of Sonic Team) favorite character, so if Sakurai was just going to include Iizuka's favorite character, it would be Shadow. Shadow is pretty similar to Sonic (so he'd be easier to develop than a newer character) while also having more than enough differences from Sonic for a moveset of his own (so fewer people get upset over buying an echo or semi-echo, which Shadow wouldn't be if he were in fp2 as a CP). Alternatively, they can make him a non-challenger pack character but he would be an echo without a stage or music-though I'd at least like to see Throw It All Away make an appearance. The biggest thing holding Shadow back are being an Assist Trophy, but since Min Min broke that spirit rule mere months ago, I think Shadow could do the same. Another thing is that if he was to be an echo, Metal Sonic would be the much more obvious choice.
Dr. Eggman, however, has just as much of a chance as Shadow, if not more. He's one of the few characters that returns for every installment, even when the series tries to completely reboot or reinvent itself. He was the very second Sonic character and arguably the first if you count his developing stages, where he was originally pitched as Sega's new mascot before Sonic was a thing. He's more important to the series than any of the other characters I mention here and has more moveset potential as well (imo). He's an extremely expressive character which would make his taunts and animations an absolute delight, and his many appearances throughout the franchise mean he won't really upset many Sonic fans with his inclusion alone. The biggest thing holding him back-well, if I'm being honest, Shadow and Bowser Jr. Shadow is the more heavily requested character from what I've seen, but that's not a huge deal, Sakurai won't choose a character on want alone (correct me if I'm wrong). Bowser Jr, is a weird case, because he also possesses a flying fortress (no pun intended) that has various tools coming out of it to attack his opponent-which is more or less how I'd imagine Eggman. They have more than enough material to make him different, but the fact that BJ already has a flying automobile of his own might ward Sakurai off of making a moveset for Eggman, fearing they would be too similar. Still, my bet's on Eggman.
Knuckles is like Shadow, where both are assist trophies that share traits with Sonic in thier games. Knuckles has lots of potential for a moveset, where he'd be a kind of glass canon that deals lots of damage but dies just as early as Sonic. He has things like the glide, melee attacks, and climb to differentiate himself from Sonic. I don't possess strong feelings for Knux as a fighter one way or another, but he would be a logical choice to please the majority of the fanbase (as Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario said in a profile post a while back). Knuckles is a wise choice, but I think he has the least chance of these four characters.
Tails is the strangest case. He's similar to Sonic, but more so is Shadow. He's a very early character in the series, but Eggman is earlier. He's a friend of Sonic's, but so is Knuckles and Shadow. He has lots of moveset potential, but so do Shadow and Eggman. I can totally see Sakurai going for Tails if he's aiming for protagonists only, because while Shadow and Knuckles are also protagonists they are also Sonic's rivals, plus Tails is Sonic's best friend. As it stands I also don't have strong feelings for Tails but would love it if he got in, as I would with any other Sonic character. He doesn't have much holding him back, apart from the "Sega has three reps" argument, which also applies to everyone else here.
I still think that there should be a second Sonic rep-I know Sega has three reps, but Sonic is one of the most influential icons of the 90's and has one of the strongest followings as well as one of the biggest hate trains of gaming. Not to mention his 30th anniversary is next year, which would be the perfect time to announce one of these characters for a Challenger Pack.
Anyways, that's what I think. Might put this in Newcomer Speculation as well.

Quote came from the Wikipedia article.

The 3D Mario All-Stars thing exists, but it sure comes with an expiration date and not a ton of changes to the games themselves. So maybe this is Sega’s opportunity to reveal that Sonic Adventure remake they’ve been hinting at. It would certainly brighten their image if they announced game that’s rebuilt from the ground up, with additions to improve gameplay experience, and a run of the game that isn’t limited.
...or just rerelease three Sonic games on modern hardware. That would also work.

But at least imo, as much as I love 3, I think SA is the game that could benefit more from a remake from the ground up. But seeing as Sega is using cutscenes from 3 again, a modern console rerelease may not be so far away.

Yeah, as a non-fan of Adventure, that game needs a remake more given Sonic 2 and 3 have aged like a fine wine, while Adventure is... an early 3D game.

Yep! I think they nailed Sonic well, and it feels like a natural evolution from 2D, but his friends...less so. Not to mention the awful camera and cutscenes.
    My god, the cutscenes.

I think it would be hilarious if Nintendo faked us out in a Direct with Super Mario All-Stars...the original one, for SNES NSO. And then revealed the 3D collection right after.
