Want to know another shocking thing that is proven? 23% of people stopped buying games because they can find them illegally. That is a PROVEN percentage. 5 billion music soundtracks were downloaded for free in 2008. It does hurt a company.

So could you cite your sources? There's generally more then what meets the eye in this sort of data.


Regardless, pirates will be pirates, the people who simply do not buy with it are people looking for free entertainment period. They will not buy literally anything now that free entertainment is possible, and if piracy is stopped the internet allows for plenty of non-commercial substitutes.


Generally speaking, businesses with a problem because of piracy are having a problem because they aren't adapting their business model to the knew technologies or aren't meeting demands of consumers (especially true in the case of media not released in a region or abandoned media, the latter of which is often tacitly supported by companies because it allows for IP to remain viable). If they adopt a distribution model which takes this fact into account, Stardock for example, does this quite efficiently if we can take any ques from the success of Galactic Civilizations.


People want a better experience, if you can give them that by making them a paying costumer, then they'll be a paying costumer if they can afford it (otherwise they won't be a paying costumer either way).


Don't forget, today's piracy techniques could be tomorrow's VCR (did you know that the VCR was accused of the exact same thing, and it was almost quashed because of it, but the courts sided with it, and that ruling protects a lot of the technology used in piracy).



To end this rant, I'll toss in some food for thought, I disagree with him on a number of points, but he gives a good idea of the debate with excellent sources and provides a viewpoint that most people simply haven't experienced, it's worth taking a step back and checking your pre-conceptions at the door.




*None of this suggests that I'm a pirate or endorsing piracy, as an aspiring IP lawyer, I'm rather aggravated at blatant infringements on our rights, as well as disgusted at companies that fail to capitalize on the potential profits the new technology offers and instead try to destroy it, people need to be made aware of these companys' poor business practices in order to make an honest judgement on the issue.

The way I see it, you wouldn't steal a physical copy of a game from a store, and thus you shouldn't download them for free either. Same applies for music. Or anything for that matter.

Thieves are scum.

Physical copies and digital copies are completely different things legally, it's not stealing it's abuse of intellectual property. If you must make an analogy to another situation it's most akin to trespassing, because it's not taking something from anybody, but it is utilizing something without the other person's permission.
