"...This is Smash. This is Smash!" Sakurai tried to be tricky, but for once, I guessed correctly before the reveal! I actually thought SSBU was simply going to be a port of SSB4 for a while, but I'm thrilled to be wrong on that end, at least. Inkling was one of the only near-100% shoo-in characters, so I'm glad they got her obvious reveal out there first (with the real surprise being the existence of a new Smash). Obviously she's a great choice.

Oh, that's kinda neat!

I flipped out. I've been wanting and expecting Ridley to be playable since Brawl, and I couldn't believe he missed out in Wii U/3DS. He was definitely my number one (non-dream) character after Mega Man's reveal in SSB4, so this was the highlight of E3 and one of my favorite character reveals ever! Can't wait to put some serious time into this bad boy.

Very excited. I've been wanting Simon in for a long time as well; he was definitely my number one Konami rep (above Snake too) and they nailed his design and moveset. I'm going to be playing a lot of Simon come the game's release as well, and I was excited to see how much Castlevania representation was in Smash.

Whoa, didn't see that coming. But Rondo of Blood is amazing so I'm cool with this. I'll probably stick to Simon though.

Chrom?? Don't get me wrong, I like him as a character and I really like Fire Emblem Awakening, but the samey-ness of the FE roster in Smash has gotten to be a bit much.

A Metroid Prime rep and the first US-created character in Smash! Dark Samus was kind of an exciting reveal for me since I love the Metroid series and I'm glad to finally see it get some other characters, although I probably won't play as her much.

A good, classic choice with a hilarious reveal. I've got eyes for the other giant lizard newcomer, but K. Rool rounds out a villainous roster nicely. Hope to see more baddies soon.

I used that Smash Bros tier list to make a graph of how I felt about each newcomer at the time of their inclusion in Smash Bros, factoring in my experience and knowledge of each series at the time of their inclusion in the series... buuut I don't want to clog up the thread with all that, so I'll just go over the newcomers thus far.


"What is this a Splatoon 1 port or something? This looks like the trailer for the original Spla-ohhh.... it's Smash.!!!" After the initial hype my thoughts could be summed up as "Well yeah, obviously they'd be in." but I was still happy nonetheless.

"The Absolute Madman actually did it! Finally" I was pleased to say the least. And very surprised.

"Oh... that's a weird choice.... Wait is she an alternate costume or not? Whatever." ...So, as a Mario fan who doesn't care about the spinoffs, the love for characters like Daisy and Waluigi has always been kind of strange to me. But I usually just zip my lip since I don't have a lot of experience with them anyway.

"oh my god oh my god the leaks were real oh my god this is the best trailer ever oh my god oh my god ahhh he looks so good!!!" I then proceeded to play Castlevania on my NES Classic Edition for the rest of the night and even beat it.

"Wait what?? Really?? That's... unexpected...But not unwelcome. Richter is the only other Belmont I really care about." That being said, I've never played Rondo or Symphony of the Night, I have played Dracula X though.

"Of course he's in. Next." Sorry. I don't like Fire Emblem.

"Yeah, okay. Cool." Ngl, I only liked the first Metroid Prime. I didn't think Dark Samus was a popular pick. She's not unwelcome or anything. I just have no strong feelings one way or the other.

This was the reveal that made me feel eternally satisfied with the roster, and potentially okay with the series potentially ending after Smash Bros. Ultimate. I haven't felt hype like this since they revealed Sonic for Brawl, something I never even dreamed possible before that. It also made me extremely hopeful of what else could possibly be left to reveal for the game. My expectations were sky high after this character was revealed. I then proceded to play Donkey Kong Country on my SNES Classic Edition the following day.

And this is the character that brought me back down to earth. I expected her to be in the game, I just didn't expect her to have her own reveal trailer and not be an Echo. The whole reveal was quite honestly hype poison to me. Now all of those seemingly impossible things I wanted don't seem as likely as I thought. Suddenly the words of "don't expect too many newcomers" are ringing in my ear and I only imagine the next few picks being Bandana Waddle Dee, Incineroar, and the latest Fire Emblem protagnist...

Don't mistake me for suddenly hating the game or even hating Isabel/Animal Crossing. This still looks like the best Smash Bros game yet, although I think my disappointment kinda shook me out of being permanently satisfied with the series because it made me realize that there is still so much more that I want in the game... As for Animal Crossing, I still love that series... but I sure hope it's more than an HD new leaf with a handful of added gimmicks.

- When they did the one more thing in the Direct after the Octo Expansion and showed the cutscene. I IMMEDIATELY knew it was Smash! I was jumping up and down! INKLINGS IN SMASH!!!! INKLINGS IN SMASH!!! HELL YEAH! Was my reaction even if Inklings were a shoe-in.

- I was like DAISY!? Really? ****ing Daisy!? I don't mind her inclusion but for her to be the first reveal after Inklings was a bit underwhelming.

- Soon as they showed the overhead dark corridor exterior, then showed Samus walking I knew who it was and I couldn't be more excited! While he was always up there and deserving of being in Smash for some reason I wasn't THAT hyped. Maybe it was because he was revealed during the "E3 Direct" where I was expecting more games, but instead we got 25 minutes of Smash. By the time Ridley was revealed I just wanted the Smash talk/Direct to end. Super happy he's in though.

- Meh. I simply don't get excited for 3rd parties in Smash. No hate against the character and I have never played a Castlevania game so I have no connection towards him. I realize he's iconic, I just feel Smash should've always remained 1st party only.

- I was like "Who? ANOTHER Castlevania character" the best thing about his reveal is that it opened my ears to "Bloodlines" and I haven't been able to get this tune out of my head ever since.

- I was like hell yeah Chrom made it! That's Awesome!

- Dark Samus is here too! That is also amazing. I will never use regular Samus ever again.

- I was at work while watching this direct. When they showed the Klaptrap assist trophy I was like "That's a dead giveaway K.Rool is coming!" When the screen started shaking I was like "What is happening!?" then they showed the villain montage "I was like NO! It can't be..." then they showed DK yawning and I started jumping up and down screaming like a little girl. HE'S HERE, HE'S FINALLY HERE! 17 YEARS OF WAITING!" Then Dedede popped up and I was like "No don't you dare!" then I accidentally bumped my phone screen and it left youtube! "I was like NO GO BACK! GO BACK!" frantically trying to get back to the stream. Then all I see is K.Rool doing the "Pathetic" stance. Tears come to my eyes. 3 of my friends texting my phone congratulating me. I couldn't work the rest of the day (still had 4 hours left in my shift), I said to myself "It's TOO HYPE!!!" I rewatched the trailer at least 50 times that day.

Isabelle - I wanted her in the game I was expecting her to be an echo but she got promoted to semi-clone/newcomer status. While I wanted her she definitely wasn't near the top of my most wanted and her reveal trailer was so lame and underwhelming that it killed the little bit of hype I did have. Then they showed Tom Nook and I was like "What Tom Nook is Joining TOO!?" but thank god it was an announcement for Animal Crossing 2019 (which I'm hyped for).

Isabelle: Well aren't you adorable! And there's a new Animal Crossing coming out in 2019. I'm not even an AC fan but that was pretty good. That trailer was pretty calming. It could've been better but hey. I'm sure no-one can hate this- *See's comments about how people were expecting Geno or how Waluigi and Ashley didn't get but Isabelle got in instead*....................... You know what...? I hope Sakurai takes a REALLY long break because you all don't deserve anything from him ever again.

At the time Smash was released, I'd not played Splatoon at all. I had no attachment to them as newcomers, but the fact Smash had just got announced was enough. I've retrospectively played Splatoon 2 and am now a big fan.

I've thought Daisy would be a fun alternate costume for Peach since Melee, even if I didn't put stock in the idea of her as a unique newcomer. Given that's effectively what she now is, I thought it was cool and made sense.

This was HYPE, man. Ridley is a cool character and I was stoked to see him here. Easily blew every character reveal from Smash 4 except Ryu out of the water.

I'd been expecting this for a while when it came around, but I've always liked the idea of Simon even if I wasn't an active supporter. His trailer was great, and I'll probably play him a bit.

This was a fun surprise I definitely WASN'T expecting! I'm more attached to the classic Simon look, but this was a cool addition for his fans.

I'm not a Fire Emblem man and never will be, but I made my peace with clones (seriously, there's some magic in that Echo Fighter rebranding) so was happy for his fans, even if I'm never going to touch him.

This was really cool, especially so soon after Ridley! It was not entirely unexpected, but this is probably my favourite echo so far and the only one I will use alongside or over the base version.

King K Rool was my #1 newcomer for both this game and Smash 4. His reveal trailer came completely out of the blue, and I was already anxious given the recently leaked PMs between Vergeben and loz18.

I can still remember the trailer extremely well. I was watching with a group of friends; we had some others who couldn't be there on Discord. We got to the end when the screen started shaking. One friend said "something big's coming", and another said "K Rool" to me - as every one of them knew I was hyping for him. I felt a tiny bit of hope but nothing more. Then the villains montage happened. Contrary to most people who seemed to respond with Subspace 2 ideas, I thought this meant a villain character was coming. I started to get very nervous. When the TV turned off and DKs mouth appeared, I was even more nervous. In my heart I felt it coming but in my head I didn't dare believe. When we saw Dedede, it was euphoric - not because of the troll, but because you clearly saw him discard a K Rool mask and I was confident Sakurai wouldn't then not reveal him.

Isabelle - After K Rool, I want for nothing, so I have no ill will towards Isabelle. I won't lie though - I did find her trailer extremely boring relative to all the other ones.

Not really....Daisy has changes that are out of the realm for an alt, and her treatment is very different to an alt.

I was more hyped when Smash got announced but I do really like Splatoon and I always thought they'd add Inkling somewhere down the line.

I prefer her to Peach and Rosalina so I was mildly hyped when Daisy got announced as an echo.

OMG this was the first character I was really hyped for because they made the impossible possible. Because of Ridley's announcement this completely changed the game in terms of new characters being added to Smash since no one ever thought Ridley would get in.

I was pretty hyped for Simon even though I was 99% sure he was gonna get added before his reveal. I've never played Castlevania but from what
I've seen it looks really fun and I think a new weapon user makes the roster more diverse.

I had no idea who he was before his reveal so I wasn't really hyped for him.

Finally Chrom got his chance and I was really happy because if there was one more FE character that deserved to get in, Chrom was my number one choice.

Meh just a dark version of Samus, pretty much like Pit and Dark Pit.

Tbh I kinda saw him coming after Ridley was revealed so I wasn't that surprised but I was definitely not dissatisfied that he got in and I loved his reveal trailer (probably my favourite reveal trailer ever).

Isabelle: I love Animal Crossing and I love Isabelle so I was really happy that she got announced and I think it perfectly tied in with the new Animal Crossing game announcement.

She has some unique animations, but all of her attacks are the same up to some tweaked properties. To me it's a glorified alternate costume. If you think otherwise then good for you, you are evidently the person who cares more about the character and I hope you have fun using her, but there isn't really any point us having this argument when I don't believe either of us will change the others opinion on this.

- She's spunky. I like it. I've played a bit of Peach from time to time. I'll dabble.

- Oh my god, it happened. People are gonna go absolutely bonkers. Psyched for another villain. I know they were worried about staying true to the character by making sure he was big, but honestly, I'd have been cool if they'd gone a little smaller.

- "Never fear! Simon Belmont is here!" Never played a Castlevania, but his whip and throwing blade look cool. I could see myself playing as him.

- WAIT, WHO IS THAT!? THERE'S TWO OF THEM!? Nevermind, Simon, you've been usurped. Your echo looks way cooler than you! You had a good run, buddy.

- Hey, it's that guy people like. Good for them. Oh, he's like a faster Ike. Wait, he's a Roy Echo!? What is going on?

Nope, that was Roy's F-air, so he must be a Roy echo. Makes sense. Wait a minute, was that Aether?! He's an echo of Roy AND somewhat of Ike?! Didn't see that coming. Oh cool, he uses his game's version of Aether as his final smash. Sweet! I wonder if Robin's final smash is going to change now.

As you can tell, I like every character that's been included in Ultimate so far; especially Ridley, Simon/Richter, and K.Rool. Can't wait to see who else gets in!

Being a big fan of Splatoon, I was already pretty excited to just get more Splatoon news at this point during the Direct back then (though still understanding people might be disappointed). And when I saw it was regarding Smash, I was really quite happy that Inklings were finally coming! They were one of my most wanted newcomers for Smash, and after the disappointment that was their Mii Fighter outfits in Smash 4 I'm really stoked they're in properly this time, and they look super fun to play as too.

I've always wanted to have Daisy as an alternate for Peach, pretty much the way she's implemented with her more unique animations to suit her own style more, so I was pretty happy to see her! I'll probably be playing as her about as much as I'll be playing Peach. I love them both really.

Eh. I've always been in the 'Ridley is too big' camp (and still kinda am honestly), and having him here in this downsized state really undermines just what kind of a monster Ridley really is honestly, at least in my opinion. That said, I'm aware of how people wanted Ridley in Smash a lot, so I'm happy for his fans most of all, even if I don't care much for him.

I'm not really big on Castlevania, but I still knew who Simon Belmont was, and I always thought it'd be cool to have him in Smash, I just never thought it would happen. But he was revealed, with a pretty awesome trailer no less, so yeah, cool!

As said above, I'm not big on Castlevania, so it's probably no surprise that I had no clue whatsoever who Richter was. I kinda prefer his design over Simon though, so I might still be playing as Richter more than Simon, but we'll see about that when the time comes. ....is it time yet?

...eh, whatever. To be honest I really don't see the appeal in Chrom whatsoever, or what makes him stand out from other Fire Emblem lords. This may or may not have something to do with me not really enjoying present day Fire Emblem (starting from Awakening), but eh. Easily my least favourite newcomer, but I'm happy for his fans at the very least.

Never thought I'd see the day Dark Samus as a character would ever be added, but here we are, and I'm mostly kinda indifferent about it. I'll probably still be playing regular Samus more, unless Dark Samus somehow just ends up feeling that much better to actually play as. I hope she has a light alternate costume though, I prefer light costumes over dark costumes generally.

I do enjoy Animal Crossing quite a bit, but as I already said in other places I would have preferred keeping Isabelle as an Assist Trophy, because assisting is literally what she does. That said I'm still happy she's here, she looks fun to play.. and you just can't help but love the idea of getting to destroy a murderous space dragon with a cute little puppy secretary and whatnot.

Incineroar - I think I was originally against Incineroar, but I don't really mind him as much anymore. If anything, I sorta like him. He's got an interesting moveset too. Great addition.
Piranha Plant - Huh? Really? This is a joke, right? They're going to come out and say that they were only kidding, right? ...No? They're serious? Alright then. I'm not too upset. I've already got Robin, so it's not like this game is ruined for me.
