Congratulations, you're a snob.

Can I ask you what exactly it does for you if you improve your mile time from 7:30 to 7:20? Hm...uh, sense of accomplishment, I guess, right?
First off, a little background info: I am not a track runner- I am actually pretty unfit. My last mile time was about 8 minutes. Running is a way for me to get in good health and keep track of how much I'm improving. I doubt you would disagree that maintaining my health is more important than doing things I enjoy.

I practice viola because I'm expected to know the orchestra's repertoire front to back. I can barely play the music, so practicing is a way for me to improve myself. Being able to play viola well has benefited me a lot, for your information. I auditioned and got into my school's top orchestra. Not only can I put this on my college applications, but I have also met and made friends with a lot of people.

I do get a sense of accomplishment from these, but it isn't my reason for doing so. These are things I do with my free time because I know these will benefit me much more in my future than setting personal records in video games.

I understand taking a break to have fun, but D13 said,

I've been waiting for some good games to come out and I needed something to pass the time. This is what I came up with. I know I'll regret it soon >_>
It looks like he isn't going to be playing "good games" that he'll enjoy. Rather, he's doing something he knows he'll regret simply to pass the time. If you spend your spare time doing something you don't even enjoy, I can recommend a million different things to do that you at least won't regret.

I started one just because of this:bee:
I may finally be inspired to finish grinding on my solo Jiggs run and try beating the E4.

I didn't say you were a track runner, but let's be fair, 8 minutes is pretty fast. Faster than my best mile, and that was after a lot of trying -- 8:48. (Of course, this is back when I actually still had to run the mile for school. I would never voluntarily run a mile again. I'll WALK, but I hate running long-distance.)

Let's also be fair in saying that improving your mile time isn't maintaining your health, it's improving your mile time. Running in general is maintaining your health.

I practice viola because I'm expected to know the orchestra's repertoire front to back. I can barely play the music, so practicing is a way for me to improve myself. I didn't say anything about the viola, did I? So there's no reason to go all "FOR YOUR INFORMATION YOU'RE WRONG".

(And if you were talking to Man of Popsicle, you should've quoted him.)

I do get a sense of accomplishment from these, but it isn't my reason for doing so. These are things I do with my free time because I know these will benefit me much more in my future than setting personal records in video games.
Except at some point just enjoying yourself is actually pretty dang important. You'll spend enough time preparing for college and crap with school, homework, and other activities without filling up all of your time doing non-recreational things.

I understand taking a break to have fun, but D13 said,

And if he's doing that to pass the time and admits he'll probably regret it chances are he doesn't care right now and doesn't feel like being lectured on how stupid he is for doing it.

I'm procrastinating on doing some work right now, I know I'll regret it later, but does that mean I want you telling me "YOU SHOULD BE FOCUSING ON IMPORTANT THINGS"? Uh, no thanks.

Ultimately, you can write it off as having legitimate reasons to do what you want to do and that he doesn't enjoy what he's doing, but my biggest problem isn't the specific situation, it's your whole attitude towards everything.

Basically, you sounded all self-important, like everyone should play the viola and practice their mile time because that's so much more important. And setting records on video games? Going for challenges? Yeah, that's totally bogus, lazy, stupid crap. Shouldn't be doing that.

It's one thing for you to prefer practicing viola or running, it's another thing to be condescending because other people don't agree. I know playing video games seems lazy in comparison, but I don't understand what's lazy about doing something like a minimal % run or a speedrun. You act as if it's WORSE to go for an unconventional play-through of a game that challenges you MORE than to play it as it's intended, without any pre-planning done in order to fulfill the challenge. Like, is it seriously worse to memorize enough of Super Metroid so that I can do a speedrun of it? Is it seriously worse for me to learn strategies in order to survive a run of Metroid Fusion with minimal energy and items?

I just don't get that logic. If I'm spending the exact same time on recreation, I don't understand why it's worse to challenge yourself.

So before you act as if you were totally justified and whatever, I feel it's necessary to point out that you sounded very condescending. And doing something that's absolutely 100% useful is overrated. As I said, sometimes it's good to just relax.

There are plenty of non-productive, fun things I would rather try to do than not have fun with a video game, like going out with friends.

I disagree with a lot of what you said, but I have one question that summarizes why I have a beef with D13.

Why would you do something that you don't enjoy and won't benefit you?

First of all, Man of Popsicle has a good point...by "regret" he might've meant it would be really, really difficult. He never once directly said "I'm not enjoying it." I'm pretty sure I had the same "I'll probably regret it later" attitude when I did my first 1% run in Metroid Fusion, too.

Second of all, who's to say he's not benefiting from it in any way, shape, or form?

Third of all, you avoided the main point of my post which had nothing to do with D13.

You could do something much more useful with your free time. I don't see the point of this challenge: what does it do for you when you're done?

I would use my free time to practice viola or run to improve my mile time. Almost anything is better than trying some useless video game challenge.

Congratulations, you're very good at playing Pokemon.
I play tennis, chess, and run track for my school. I dunno, just an FYI.

But we should try to limit arguing in this topic. It would be a shame to see it closed.

Btw, I'm doing this because trying new things is fun. Starter soloing used to be my standard method for finishing any Pokémon game. It got boring, so I thought to myself: let's mix things up a bit!

Suddenly all my Pokémon games have huge replay value. It's also cool to see peoples' reactions when I finish. :bee:

But caterpie doesn't learn poison sting so you can't beat ghosts.
Struggle.

This one just irked me a little. I don't really want to get into anything, and I applaud him for taking on a challenge and reaching the goal; I just want an answer:

Can you tell me exactly how he'd honestly benefit from this, besides feeling like he has a greater sense of self? Better application of use of goods, perhaps? It's stretching it.

It probably taught him a good bit of patience and determination.

Wow, that's pretty impressive, congrats indeed...who knew Wurmple was so deadly D:

Lol and if you guys start talking about how you could benefit from such a thing, you might as well start questioning why you play video games altogether and how it benefits anything
Wurmple still sucks. Badly. He just did good with a bad character, like well-known low tier mains in Brawl. :p

I'm not trying to approach this as a hostile whatsoever, I'm just asking a question.

It probably taught him a good bit of patience and determination.
~and here it is. I'm pretty sure there's other benefits that we can look for, but there's really no reason to go on. It's done.

Again, great job on completing this.
Now do Magikarp :D

Okay:
You're on a video game site.
You're posting.
You've been online a cumulative total of at least three hours between yesterday and today. (probably more)
I bet you play smash.

And you're criticizing some who's playing pokemon.

Other people have extra cirricular activities too.
I'm in football
I'm in badminton
I'm in honors and AP classes
I have a social life

And I play pokemon too.
Don't be stupid.

Quick update for you guys. School is taking a dump on my free time, so I haven't been playing as much as before.

I had to grind my Wurmple to level 26 just to get by Brock. This took 7 hours of grinding to accomplish (not all in one sitting of course!). I had tears of joy when that **** Onix finally went down. :bee:

I skipped Misty's gym at first in order to get in a few more levels. Her Starmie is no joke. Once Caterpie was up in the mid 40s, I revisited Cerulean City to give her a good thrashing. Lt. Surge soon followed. What a chump!

Caterpie and I are currently chillin' in the rock tunnel. It worries me that I have seen no Pokémarts with x items in stock.
