Well I'm guessing it came off a Torkoal, which isn't the most powerful of pokémon.

Yeah so...
EV reducing berries were introduced in Emerald, and aren't in FR/LG
Which is really too bad because you're going to have a tough time taking on Steven without decent Defense/HP... Had you maxed Def/HP you could have survived critical hits even from Armaldo's max Ancient Power as well as Metagross's max Meteor Mash. You can still do it, it's just gonna be frustrating when (if) you are max level and half their crits OHKO you :(
Might I suggest BrightPowder? The whole strategy becomes a lot more viable if you just make Wurmple stall with potions/heals/etc. and then let them struggle to death :D
Anyways, that's my 2 cents. Good luck!

Some Dire Hits might be a decent investment.

Wait, do they even have Dire Hits in the later games?

Lol, it's just that they're probably the only things I never use.

Ever.

I've never used battle items in my life.

ahaha guess what guys

I just beat Winona. It took 6 x attacks and 2 x defends, but I did it. I'll see if I can post a few pics soon.

Punishment Divine told me it was impossible, haha. Where's your argument now?

First of all, a lot of people making comments about how Magikarp can't beat ghosts and such need to really rethink your very basic Pokemon. All Pokemon have an "extra" move that is pivotal in challenge runs like this: Struggle. That hits ghosts.

I've seen this challenge done before; it is definitely possible. As I recall, the person had far and away the hardest time with the Liza & Tate (7th gym leader) since they both pound on your low sdef and it's a 2v1. As I recall, the player needed to get his Wurmple up to level 93 to win that fight... I really do hope you put 252 EVs into sdef (it's far and away the most important stat since you can't boost it with X items). Really you should have been selective with Wurmples and gotten one with a Careful nature (and decent IVs would be a bonus; I'd breed Wurmples on another game and transfer in the egg personally), but it's too late for that now. Regardless, you should be able to win; I think the strategy was to get a turn 1 poisoning from Poison Sting on Solrock and then just use potions every turn until it died (you can also stall them out of PP this way). The absolute worst case, if you really cannot win, is to equip a Brightpowder, Lax Incense (as I recall, that's half as potent at Brightpowder), or Focus Band and just rely on luck to run them out of PP. If them getting crits is a problem, I believe Guard Spec. prevents that (at least I think it prevents crits; I'm really not sure).

Once you've beaten Liza & Tate, the rest of the game should be downhill. You'll probably be at level 100 for the Elite Four, and I think all of them are quite reasonable to get a chance to use all the X items you need for a clean sweep.

I told myself I would use the first Wurmple I caught. It feels more genuine that way (to me at least). Did the other guy carefully breed and EV train his Wurmple? Mine has like 50 spdef EVs at most, haha. Thanks for some of the tips though. I may have a use for Guard Spec. now.

'Didn't realized struggle hit ghosts. Good to know.

Honestly, I beat Sapphire (my first true video game ever) with only Swampert. I was in the late 80's by the end with a team of HM slaves. I was such a noob back then. XD

Guard Spec only prevents stat reduction, and the only thing it would help with is 10% chance of lowering your Special Defense from Psychic. Probably not worth it at all. The only thing that I know of that prevents critical hits is Lucky Chant, a move learned by a handful of pokemon in gen IV, and Battle Armor, a pokemon ability certainly not known by Wurmple.

Liza and Tate will probably be difficult since it's 2v1, but keep in mind Wurmple has 10 more SpD and 25 more HP, which makes him far more suited than Magikarp to tank Solrock's Flamethrower (read Solarbeam for Magikarp). Also, Flamethrower is only 95 base power to SolarBeam's 120, and since neither receive STAB, it makes this challenge all the more doable.

Assuming you are immediately using X Sp Def, the only thing you have to worry about is critical hits. With Sunny Day active, and two things attacking you, pretty much any critical hit from Solrock's Flamethrower or Lunatone's Psychic will mean a KO.

Also a note about Struggle, not only does it hit ghosts but it has recoil. This means when the ghosts run out of PP, they also have to use Struggle, and assuming you don't faint first, will eventually KO themselves.

X Sp Def does not exist in Gen III (it's a new item for gen IV). If it did, all battles would be easy.

I wasn't aware of what Guard Spec did though and apparently guessed wrong; that's good to know. It may be worth it if you actually have to stall out PP (you have no way to undo a sdef drop so a sdef drop is probably just a slower version of a crit... i.e. you lose), but hopefully poison will do some favors. Also be sure to have some Full Restores so you can heal and cure Flamethrower's burn at the same time; you don't want getting burnt to be a lose condition, you won't have time for Burn Heal, and you won't want to waste your hold item on a Rawst Berry (or whichever one actually cures burn).

I also think Solrock uses Sunny Day which makes Flamethrower hit even harder so he's definitely the one to try to poison first (if I'm right).

Oh.

Then I pretty much agree with what Ampharos said. You are probably going to have to up your level big time for this battle.

I once did a solo-run on Pokemon Silver with Feraligatr, though I may have used the Clone cheat somewhere along the line.....

Solo runs with a fully evolved starter are ****ing easy.

I've won all the games with just the starter.

I used to do that with any starter; it really isn't that difficult. Just stock up on potions and you're good. You don't even need any battle items.

On another note, Pancake is still having a bit of trouble with that Torkoal. I need some serious grinding.

Wurmple's shield dust ability blocks added effects like burn, so I'm ok there. I love shield dust so much~!

Guard Spec. still sounds like a good idea.

Starter solo-ing is my standard method of playing through Pokémon games, heh. What level is Pancake, mad?

Even yellow? I can imagine the first gym being pretty hard, unless you pull an ash and thundershock onix... Pikachu learns some normal moves i think, but beating that rock/fighting elite 4 guy would also be difficult. If I remember correctly, the highest level wilds around are in the 40's, so it would take a lot of grinding to overlevel.

Someone should do a D/P Kricketot run-through. Not Pt; just D/P.

I highly doubt there are many who would be able to complete it without causing extreme pain to themselves or taking long breaks in between gyms.

Surfing Pikachu.

It is possible, with the wondrous tricks of Pokémon Stadium. I know this because I've done it straight up, lol. I didn't want to train Butterfree, so I just pwned Prime Cup with Mewtwo instead and got surfing Pika.

oh, i was assuming the same rules as the wurmple run, no tms and only hm slaves.
-to all: what is the lowest level pokemon you defeated the elite 4 with r/b (or others i guess)? I did it with mew starting lvl 46, but I think it would be impressive to see someone do that with a worse pokemon.

The TMs part isn't a rule set up for the run. Wurmple cannot learn any egg moves or TMs. He only learns 3 moves total (4 if he's on Platinum).
