I too haven't listened to enough producers to really make a list. I really like Madlib and Dilla though, they're my favorites.

Also which one of you is Champ Gallagher on FB?

He produces for MF Doom (Madvillain), Kweli (Liberation), worked with Dilla (Jaylib), some De La Soul, some Ghostface, and a bunch of other people. He's more underground/alternative rap than a lot of other producers. Signed to Stones Throw. Really underrated imo.

10th? yikes. people definitely sleeping on Kanye
I totally agree with you when you say music is subjective, so I'm not gonna say you're objectively wrong. That said, there's a lot of amazing producers to consider when making a best all-time list. 10th shouldn't be a shocking number, I'm being generous. Most people have him somewhere between 15th and 20th from most lists I've seen.

Aside from the 5 I mentioned, these are other producers I would put above Kanye:

-Large Professor
-J Dilla
-Rick Rubin
-Prince Paul

And those are all for sure. I'd also think about Hi-Tek, Marley Marl, The Neptunes, and Eric Sermon, just to name a few. There's a lot to consider.

i'd take out prince paul and put erick sermon at that spot. i think way too many people forget or are just unaware of other producers existing. kanye in top 10 is understandable but not absolute.

I respect Kool Moe Dee as a rapper, but he has a ****ty idea of who's the best at the business.

http://slumz.boxden.com/f87/50-greatest-mcs-all-time-kool-mo-dee-controversial-587782/

Melle Mel #1?
Big Pun at 41 with Fat Joe at 46?
Slick Rick at 40?!
Doug E Fresh at 36? Above Pun and Slick Rick?!?!?!?
No Big L? No Eminem?
Treach #16?
Himself #5, and Grandmaster Caz #6?
Queen Latifa above Tupac?! And Kool G Rap?! And Jay Z?!
Lauryn Hill above Nas (not to mention the three above)?!
Xzibit above Common, Scarface, and Black Thought?! Oh, and Big Pun.
Lil Kim #42?
No Ghostface Killa? Method Man above GZA? Method Man above Ice Cube?!
No Andre 3000?!
No Mos Def or Talib Kweli?! (C'mon, you at least gotta have one of them)
Also notable exclusions are Masta Ace, AZ, Canibus, Cormega, DMX

I'll stop raging, because I could go on all day. Call me crazy, but any list whose top ten does not include Nas, 2pac, Scarface, Pun, Kool G Rap, or Ice Cube, but DOES include Grandmaster Caz is a liiiiitle bit wack imo. Discuss this ****.

(Lol at him being above LL Cool J. Hard feelings?!)

Pretty terrible list imo.

GZA isn't the only Wu-Tang member, Method Man's on there.
Yeah, haha I figured that out and edited it in.

Well, it's clearly got a big old school emphasis. While I respect that, some of the placements (or lack thereof) are absolutely bizarre for someone who knows so much about rap.

See I was going to argue that a lot of these guys are inactive/their work is dated and won't stand the test of time. Lots of producers have classics scattered here and there (Ski on Dead Presidents?) but I don't think all these producers are going to end up with as many timeless records as Kanye will. That being said thats a very biased argument since Kanye is still producing and we haven't seen yet if he's really standing the test of time. Plus I'm not as familiar with these others' full discographies like I am with Kanye.

Sidenote, which I'm sure people are just gonna hate me more for, but I really don't care for Dilla in the slightest. I checked the guy out cause he was so hyped, and I've really just been very disappointed. I'm not a stoner, if that makes a huge difference.

I've also never seen a list that had Kanye outside of top 10, not that I care for lists.

I'm not a stoner either lol. But "best" doesn't mean "favorite". For example, Lauryn Hill and Common really aren't my favorites to listen to all the time (only sparingly), but I still respect them for what they've done.

I guess I see what you guys are saying. See I would never just say somebody is top 10 if I didn't like them. That seems to be a different approach than mine. In general tho I don't really approach hip hop from the producer's side. Rappers come first for me. Some people are willing to listen to Guru's wack *** all day just for the Premo (actually in that case I have, just cause Premo is that sick), but in general I just feel the quality of the rapper is more important to me so I'm not really free to speak on people like Rick Rubin and Prince Paul.

Right, I see what you're saying. The question is where do you stop putting them lower on your list because of not liking them?

Wow, this is my 107th post in this thread, more than I thought lol.

Okay, so, I have this thing I need help on.

I want more hip-hop in my music library.

Can you gents come together and throw a few names and albums at me? I have a tiny list of music I'm interested in, but other opinions are always nice. Thanks. I'll probably be posting my opinions on albums here, as I listen to them.

If you need some sort of grounds to base stuff off of, I really, really dig The Roots and Chiddy Bang.

Here, just have a list of hip-hop albums I own.

The Roots - How I Got Over
Chiddy Bang - The Swelly Express
Kanye West - Late Registration
Kanye West - Graduation
Tor / Sufjan Stevens - Illinoize
Intuition & Verbs - Buzz EP

And now have a list of the names I've gathered so far in my studies:

Nas
Mos Def
Talib Kweli
Lupe Fiasco
Aesop Rock
Wu Tang Clan
Eminem

A few more names, and I think I'll be satisfied.

ALSO JANE WE HAVE THE SAME BIRTHDAY.

Luigitoilet mentioned some good ones. Atmosphere is amazing and not respected enough; I think you'd really enjoy the album LT mentioned.

If you're just looking for music you'd enjoy, Outkast would probably be good. I'd recommend all of their albums, but Stankonia is a great place to start.

If you're looking to beef up hip hop knowledge/understanding, the list goes on long. I'm no expert, but I do know what bases you need to cover.

- 2Pac and Biggie
- Rakim
- KRS One
- NWA
- Public Enemy
- Nas
- Wu Tang Clan
- Slick Rick

There are many, many, many other extremely important artists/groups (Outkast included), but the above ones will cover all the bases and provide a good start.

aesop rock??? nooooooooo!!!
Don't listen to this hoodlum, Aesop rock is a good artist. <3

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-- I forgot about 2Pac. How does anyone forget that...?

But yeah, I guess I forgot to check the numbers section or something.

Moving on! I forgot a lot of other really good names in my last post.

J Dilla
Madlib
Goodie Mob
Madvillain
MF Grimm
Kid Cudi
MF DOOM
Madlib

In addition to the other stuff posted here. I'm not forgetting stuff like Atmosphere and Dr. Dre.

Blu3, I'm only rabid about of couple of bands, and I try not to be annoying about it. But, in any case, an act's fanbase should have nothing to do with the music they make, you should know that.

By the way, I like this Blu you linked earlier. I really like it.

hahaha hoodlum? hey, i wouldn't have a problem with aesop if his fans weren't complete dickheads about how "great" he is.
Haha yeah, true. I'm not saying he's amazing, but he's fairly good. I almost feel the exact same way about MF Doom, but I like Doom more than Aesop. But some people are REALLY obsessed with Doom.

You realize that throwing a humongous list at someone not very familiar with hiphop is pretty intimidating? You just listed a ton of musicians that sound nothing alike. You think he's going to go and listen to every artist on that list?
