Harry Potter will do sick business as a Wii game. EA will probably make it suck, but as long as they make the Wii wand a...wand, the kids will eat it up. Apparently Madden Wii is good already, and SSX and Tiger should both be good. It's a solid list of titles. Not sure why they're putting Godfather on it after they blew off a GameCube version though.

The Wii will be able to hold its own against the XBox 360 and PS3. The low price will certainly help, as will the backwards compatibility with GCN games. I'm looking forward to a Star Wars game. Motion sensing + lightsaber = Stormtroopers' worst day.

I've tried pre-ordering it around where I live, but nobody seems to be taking pre-orders or they claim they won't start pre-orders until they know how many units they will get. It's all lies I say.

More Wiimote !nfo from IGN :)

July 14, 2006 - edThe Big N has been relatively hush-hush about the details of its innovative new Wii console and controller, choosing to release information during major events and then going quiet on the subject. But in official Wii developer documentation obtained by IGN, the company defines many of the hardware specifics and functionalities for its upcoming Wii controllers. We have some of those revelations below.

One of the big questions about the Wii-mote has remained how it will be powered. Official documentation on the topic offers some answers. The pointer will accept two AA alkaline batteries, which will keep it going for a considerable amount of time. If the precision aim functionality of the pointer is being used in games, the device will run for approximately 30 hours. If only the accelerometer functionality is being utilized, the Wii-mote will operate for 60 hours on two AA batteries.
The controller communicates with the Wii console via Bluetooth technology on a 2.4GHz band.

The Wii-mote features 6KB of "non-volatile" memory, whose exact purpose remains a mystery. IGN Wii speculates that this throwaway memory could possibly be used in conjunction with the Wii-mote's recently revealed internal speaker. It's also possible that this memory could enable players to store custom settings for the controller. However, official documentation does not specify one way or the other. In fact, Nintendo is currently offering developers no means to interact with the controller's internal speaker despite showing off games such as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which spotlighted the hardware feature at E3 2006 in Los Angeles.

Recent photos of the Wii console's front flap showcase a button called SYNCHRO, whose purpose seems fairly obvious. The SYNCHRO button is, according to documentation, used to identify Wii controllers that can be used with the console. It assigns each controller a wireless ID number. Evidently gamers first press the SYNCHRO button on the console itself and then find and press another SYNCHRO button located inside the battery compartment of the Wii controller. Documentation also suggests that gamers can hold down the 1 and 2 buttons on the Wii-mote to accomplish the same task.

All of the buttons on the Wii controller are digital in nature. This includes (obviously) the D-Pad, as well as A, B, 1, 2, -, +, Power and SYNCHRO. The C and Z buttons on the nunchuk unit are also digital.

The sensor bar that interacts with the Wii-mote must be placed "above or below" the television set. The bar itself is about 20 centimeters in length and features two sensors, one on each end.

The Wii-mote's LEDs serve two roles. The first is to show which player is communicating with the console at a given moment. Player 1 will light up on the far left, Player 2 the next over, and so on. The second purpose is to illustrate battery life. Upon booting up, four LEDs blink when the controller has between 75% and full power. Three LEDs blink to show 50% and 75% power. Two LEDs blink to show 25% and 50% power. And one LED blinks to illustrate anything below that.

The Wii-mote features a built-in rumble motor that can be turned on or off. It does not offer varying degrees of rumble sensitivity. However, according to documentation, more intense vibrations can be simulated if developers rapidly trigger the motor on and off.

Light sources from fluorescent and halogen lamps, plastic, mirrors and more may occasionally interfere with the pointer, based on official documentation. To eliminate this interference, the pointer must identify the sensor bar and mark its two coordinates. When pointing with the Wii-mote, the unit is actually interacting with the sensor bar, which then translates data to the television, in effect simulating a direct aim to the television.

Interestingly, according to documentation the Wii-mote is able to act as something of an eye, measuring coordinates between 0-1023 on the X axis and 0-767 on the Y axis, which means that it is more or less seeing a megapixel image. Whether or not this data can be interpreted into visual information remains unknown, but we're not ruling out the possibility that the pointer could sub as a camera. This is, of course, purely speculative on our part, but stranger things have certainly happened - like, for instance, an internal speaker.

Developers tell IGN Wii that they are expecting to get classic Wii controllers in early September, which suggests that Nintendo is serious about providing this third input alternative for Virtual Console endeavors.

We contacted Nintendo of America for comments on our latest findings.

"There are many details that we've divulged about the console, but there is also more to learn," said the subsidiary's PR manager, Matt Atwood, in a telephone conversation. "However, Nintendo does not comment on rumors or speculation."

Nintendo's new generation console is officially set to launch sometime before the Thanksgiving holiday. However, rumors persist that the machine could debut as early as late October. Nintendo is expected to hold a briefing in September to reveal price and release date. IGN Wii will have more on the system as information becomes available.

This is why I worry.

If the first wave of Wii games lack feedback from the in-controller speaker, it will be disappointing, but in the grand scheme of things, probably only a minute detail. It's a very cool feature that I expect to receive a lot of attention throught the life of the Wii, but I'm not going to start worrying just because the first few games might not utilize it.

...of course, Nintendo dragging their feet on providing speaker support to companies could lead to greater problems. Great. Now I AM starting to worry.

jolly old england. hohoho.
The speaker was my favourite news from E3 :) I remember when I first heard about rumble paks on the N64 and my immediate reaction back then was ''WTF, I'd rather have a speaker or something....meh.'' So it's nice they put it in now :)

I could have sworn there was an interview with the Red Steel developers about implementing the speaker into their game?

Though maybe they don't count... anyways, I don't think it would take that long to put this feature into games and Nintendo probably kept it quiet because they wanted it to be a surprise and not let the rumours spread out before E3. I still think it was a mistake to reveal the speaker at E3; Sony can easily copy it before launch and it wouldn't even be surprising anymore if they did.

Latest Wii news from IGN. I bolded what I thought was important. Its nothing big but hey, its news right?

July 17, 2006 - The Tappei Times is reporting that chipmaker Macronix expects at least 35% of its sales for the year to be generated from shipments of its mask ROM for use in Nintendo's upcoming Wii console.

Macronix president Miin Wu confirmed that the company is supplying Nintendo with the solution, but would offer no further comment.
Mask ROM is a read-only memory whose contents are programmed by the manufacturer. Mask ROM is generally cheaper than other formats, which makes it advantageous to Nintendo, a company hoping to keep costs low for its new generation console.

But just because the games currently in development don't utilize the speaker for the most part, doesn't mean it's cause to worry. How long did it take for third party developers to really start using the mic on the DS, and now look at the DS's releases. I swear, like every week something else comes out for the DS, no matter what it might be. And just the fact that the DS's mic has is being used more and more extensively and innovatively means that it won't be hard to start using it on the Wii.

A search on Wiki reveals that Macronix also made the sound chips for the Triforce Arcade system.

A google search reveals their website, here.

Now, it expects 35% of THIS YEAR'S SALES to be generated with parts for the Nintendo Wii... which, according to one anylist, began production earlier this month.

Macronix Web Site said:
Macronix is a leading provider of innovative Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) solutions. Utilizing state of the art technology in our cutting edge fabrication facilities, we offer a wide range of NOR Flash and Mask ROM products across various densities. Through strong relationships with our customers, we continue to develop pioneering products for consumer and enterprise applications. The company is poised to increase market share and continues to expand our presence as the #1 Mask ROM supplier in the world.
When a "Leading Privider" is expecting to double their sales in quarters 3 and 4 due to "shipments of its mask ROM for use in Nintendo's upcoming Wii console"... that's a lot of Wiis.

Wow, just wow. You are awesome. It's funny that they are only going to bring the Dragon Quest series back to Nintendo if we buy a lot of the Dragon Quest Swords game. It's like they're bribing us. And I'm not paying for Wii Sports so it better come free.

It's a plasma so you should just be able to turn it sideways. If the height is too tall, then knocking over a wall would be worth it to get that monster into your house. Anyways... Yeah, the Wii is cool. And $50 games for Wii games is looking pretty good. I was worried that they were going to be $60 or even $65. It hasn't been officially comfirmed though, right?

The title thread really really needs to be updated! Marth has put up like 100 links, and there's been a lot of stuff revealed that isn't there.

The main page has all of the needed facts on it. Most of the stuff he has posted is relatively useless, rumors, button info(ZzZ), etc. Information on individual games belong in their respective topics.

When solid on important things ,like the release date, is known the page will be updated. So far there has been none.

Sorry, Chill, I guess I wasn't thinking when I thought new screenshots and game info were important. [/angry]

The problem is, there just isn't anyhting to talk about. The same thing is happening with that old Twilight Princess thread- no new info, so it's dead. At least Marth is trying to contribute.

Yeah, you can actually see the purple button in like 3 of the pics in nintendo Power, I'm assuming it's some kind of shortcut button for developers, but who knows? A recent article said Nintendo is still undecided on the number of buttons, but than again, the wii is already in production.

I think another button would be good.

The more the merrier right?......................but purple?

Well, either he or Cashed is an Xbox Fanboy. So of course he's jealous.
Any electronics people want to give an opinion on the battery life? Is that good? bad? neutral? I think 30 hours with the pointer is okay, although I'd like longer.

Excuse me, Zink?

And 30 hours is fine for battery life. If Nintendo doesn't sell some sort of recharge pack though I'll be disappointed, I've saved a lot of money by using recharge packs for my 360 rather than AA batteries.

Why not get some rechargable AAs and a charger? Its a great investment anyways. It takes 6 AAs to power my paintball loader which runs though them like nothing. I cant tell you how many batteries I would have gone though by now. Because I have like 12 rechargable batteries, bettery life is not an issue.

I hope that the Wii will have rechargable batteries because they've been always top qualitly battery life. For example: DS, SP. The only ones that have rechargable batteries. lol

Either way there are tons of games for the Wii that will be out this and next year. One of which is SSBB. XD Also Wi-Fi is going to be good to have. I'm getting Zelda TP at launch and a couple others if I can afford them that is.
