Ruling out characters that are already in the game (either playable or as assists) and characters from other console makers (so no Banjo-Kazooie, as great as they would be)...

1. Rayman (Rayman) - based on Rayman Legends alone, there seems to be a lot that they could do with him, and it's a shame that they got permission to use him in Smash 4 only to add him as a regular trophy

2. Travis Touchdown (No More Heroes) - I've generally enjoyed the No More Heroes games, and Suda 51 has been asking Sakurai to include Travis in Smash for about a decade now. While the games are very different from Smash content-wise, it seems entirely within the realm of possibility to tone him down - the games only get bloody during finishing moves, which wouldn't apply to Smash.

3. Heihachi Mishima (Tekken) - he's my favourite character in Tekken, and Namco's back to help with Smash Ultimate. Besides, it would be an interesting change of pace to have a third party franchise represented by its villain, and even with what little I know about Tekken, it seems like the game's focus on juggling could result in an interesting move-list.

4. Doomguy (Doom) - I don't really have any deep reason here - he'd just be fun, even if his shotguns are excluded. (the pistol and chain gun are energy weapons in the 2016 Doom, so I think they'd be okay)

5. Dante (Devil May Cry) - he'd have a crazy amount of moveset potential, even if they just limited it to DMC3 or 4. Besides, he's generally a fun character to watch or play as in his own games, and that could easily transfer over to Smash.

Updating my list because my wants have changed over time (also AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH I can't believe Banjo and Kazooie made it in! This is so exciting!)

1. Dante - the announcement for DMC1 for the Switch, coupled with Itsuno's comments on Dante in Smash, give me hope. Also, I've played through DMC5 since then, and that game was amazing. Even if Dante was limited to his two guns and his sword upgrade from that game, there's still so much that he could do.

2. Doomguy - whether they based him on classic Doom, Doom 2016, or Doom Eternal, he seems like he'd be a ton of fun to play as. We know that Bethesda's been in contact with Nintendo for Smash, and he seems like the sort of off-the-wall but still logical pick that would be included as the final DLC character.

3. Sans (Undertale) - yes, seriously; thinking about it, I'd really like to see Sans make it into Smash. I've played through Undertale at least twice now, which is rare for me when it comes to an RPG, and I'd love to see how the development team handles the characters, music, and world of Undertale. As for why I went with Sans specifically, he seems like the face of the franchise along with Papyrus, and even in a Pacifist run, his true nature is still hinted at. (I haven't tried the other runs) The human, at least in the run-throughs that I've done, is non-violent; maybe they could draw from other runs of the game, but Sans seems to be the more popular pick by far.

4. Rayman - he'd make a ton of sense, and my reasoning hasn't changed since last time; I'd just be more excited by the top three.

5. Travis Touchdown - again, my reasoning hasn't changed, and the announcement of No More Heroes 3 helps.

Edit: as of November 12, 2019, replace Sans with Geno, since Sans is a Mii costume.

There are so many great third party characters I'd love to see playable in Smash (or at the very least, would fully support). Narrowing it down to five is difficult, but I'll do my best:

1. Geno - If you couldn't tell by my signature, Geno's basically the one big character I have left of speculation to really be entirely satisfied that Ultimate pulled out all of the stops and made so many impossible things happen. I don't really think he's got the best shot unless we get DLC beyond the Fighter's Pass, but I will hold out hope for him until the very end since I absolutely love him as a character and Super Mario RPG. Few games have inspired the kind of joy that game did for me. If Sakurai gives me Geno in Ultimate, I'll probably never need another Smash game in my life now that my most wanted characters pretty much all got in otherwise, I have every veteran, and got great surprises like Joker.
2. Master Chief - I ****ing love Halo. It has amazing music, an enjoyable story, and some of the best FPS mechanics in the business. Chief in Smash is absolutely a long shot too, especially since I also generally only expect Banjo Kazooie from Microsoft, but he's an icon that I have a huge attachment to and would lead to one of the best moments in gaming history.
3. Ryu Hayabusa - Ninja Gaiden definitely stands out as one of the classic NES series not currently in Smash, and you could pull so many amazing moves from his modern games to make him absolutely stick out from other fighters. He feels like the last NES icon we need.
4. Crash Bandicoot - Another sort of dream of mine is that we'll also have the best Playstation fighting game in addition to the best Nintendo fighting game, so Crash would be perfect in that regard. He's insanely animated in everything he does and he's another icon of the 90s that would be incredible to see realized in Smash. I don't have a ton of personal attachment to him, but I also just think he'd be a genuinely awesome addition to Smash and that he makes a ton of sense if Sakurai is looking for another Western third party fighter.
5. Bomberman - Probably the most head scratching Assist Trophy of all time, Bomberman definitely feels like another icon that deserved a spot on the roster from my personal perspective and could have been such a cool explosives specialist in direct contrast to Snake. I love the design of Bomberman and I've really loved what I've played of the series. Again, much like other characters, I really don't think we'll see Bomberman get the call for the upgrade to playable any time soon, but it would be amazing to see.

Spoiler: Honorable Mentions

-Travis Touchdown would be really cool since No More Heroes is great and Suda 51 just needs to be in Smash in some way if we're going with the ever-widening museum of Japanese gaming.

-Phoenix Wright would be a damn cool character to get working based upon how he was handled in Marvel vs Capcom. I'd love to see another iconic Capcom face make it into Smash.

-Amaterasu would also be an amazing pick for bringing Okami to Smash, but I don't think it'll ever happen.

-Sora would be great for the people who want him, though I have no experience with Kingdom Hearts.

-Rayman definitely should already be in considering he's been passed over twice for some reason and Ubisoft has stuck with Nintendo through so much over the years. Rayman is definitely another platforming icon of the 90s and would look great in Smash.

-Doom Slayer would also be really cool since he'd probably bring a wonderfully brutal move set and I think the FPS genre could use some representation in Smash. Honestly, in that regard, Doom doesn't really have any contenders besides Chief. Mick Gordon's music would also be really great to hear in Smash.

-Tetromino or a Tetris block based character would be hilarious and wonderful if made a reality. Plus, it's ****ing Tetris, it's an essential part of Nintendo and gaming history.

-Tracer would be a really off the wall pick that would be cool to see in Smash. Unfortunately, Overwatch has fallen from grace in the past year or two and I'm not sure it currently serves as a big enough series to warrant inclusion in Smash. Plus, I don't think she's ever appeared on a Nintendo console?

I'd also be pretty happy with Dante, Lloyd Irving, and Solaire or anyone else from Dark Souls.

I'd really be fine with most choices, but I am much less inclined to support Indies in Smash at this point if I'm being completely honest
