Hello ladies and gents of smashboards.

Today, I quit smoking......cigarettes.

Basically I'm gonna keep a mini diary of sorts on how I'm doing.

I'm gonna need all the distractions possible and this should help.

Hopefully I can inspire some other people if I am successful.

Anyways.

Day 1: Haven't had a smoke since roughly 11 pm last night. It was weird not having the usual morning smoke, I also usually take regular smoke breaks while playing online games so I keep wanting to go for one every couple of games.

At the moment though, I'm not craving one at all really.

I do not know if this applies to you, but a friend of mine used sunflower seeds to distract him from his craving for cigeretes. Best of luck I hear quitting is extreamly hard.

You're at the easy part. It'll get harder, and if you've built any sort of habits/patterns for smoking, the draw of habit will kill you harder than anything.

It's like people who are used to getting up in the morning and following a specific routine, when the routine is disrupted, it affects them quite badly. Now add nicotine withdrawal to that.

Still if you manage to honestly keep off the smoking for a week (as in not even one sneaky smoke), your body wll detox and you will lose your physical dependence for nicotine. After that it's all psychological.

Also heads up, soon after stopping, the cilia in your respiratory system will start beating again. They'll start bringing up all sorts of gunk that remained in your lungs while you were a smoker (cilia get burnt away quite significantly when you're a regular smoker). Expect to have a worse smoker's cough for a while, and for you to have watering eyes because you're coughing so hard and gunky **** is coming out.

Once that phase is over, you'll feel great.

And then you'll see someone smoking and twitch. You'll get the feeling for the rest of your life.

Good luck!

Edit: I posted this as I was rolling a cigarette LOL

I should stop purely for the sake of my youthful looks. Hm oh well

Ya, the psychological part is basically taking away the things that you associated smoking with. It takes some work. They say to destroy an addiction you need to create another one. For example, I used to smoke a lot of "stuff" before but now since I want to do boxing and run a lot.. there's no more need to smoke since I kinda have to stop in order for me to access my full potential with endurance. Finding a good reason like that helps a lot. Quitting just to quit leaves you open to too many opportunities where you can simply go: "Meh, I'll just go out and smoke one for the hell of it" It's flaky determination that way. Well.. that's how I can relate to this.

Edit: It's generally the habit that's the problem of our daily lives. You know just smoking 1 like once every 3-6 months is not going to do much, I mean if there's an occasion, hell why not.. I personally don't like to limit my experiences with friends, but that's me.

Hope it helps a bit. =)

Ingesting nicotine won't help at all.

I mean yeah it kills your cravings somewhat, but it will feel like a weak substitute for smoking, especially since it's delivered like a cigarette.

imo it'll just make it worse than cold turkey.

The first week is the main hurdle, and one week isn't that bad right?

Lol even I did it and I had no real commitment to stopping.

Good luck with quitting. My dad still has not quit. The only quitter I know is my Grandmother who stopped smoking 17 years ago when I was first born because she did not want to be a smoking grandmother.

The only thing that always perplexes me is how people become smokers in the first place. It is so nastehhhh.

Good job, and good luck. I know a guy who's been smoking for years. He quit once for a few months, but then he went back on it.

Whatever you do, don't think that cutting to ultra lights is going to help.

I've smoked many times already but I somehow can't get addicted to it @_@.

Guess I'm lucky?
We're alike. Might be genetic. My grandfather and father were the exact same way.

I can stop, but I don't want to.

I don't care about my health and smoking is fun.

No need to quit.

I personally think that cigarettes are nasty. However, cigars and pipes are not (depending on if they are good quality and a flavor you like). I actually just finished smoking a cigar.

@Yaay
I am the same way. I have been smoking for over a year now and I am still not addicted. Of course, the cigar that I had tonight was my first smoke in three weeks. lol So it's not like I do it a lot to become dependent.

Waiting is what kills you. Waiting for friends. Waiting for something to open. Waiting for cabs. Waiting to start your shift. Waiting for your break to end. Waiting, waiting, waiting.

Waiting is a blank space between two dots of actually doing something proactive, and we smokers fill that blank space with cigarettes. We don't realize our dependence until we try to give them up. I quit a little while back... attempt number six or so. So far so good!

Fill those wait times, is my best advice. I used to carry a book with me -- that helped a fair bit.

Ok so when I originally went to post this, it said I couldn't, so I gave up.

But it seems it actually did, so good.

I'm on day 4 now.

Yesterday I was at some MvC3 casuals and lots of the guys were going out for smokes, it was killing me.

Then last night me and the lads were watching football and they were all smoking while drinking, I just need to get past this 1st week and it will start getting easier.

My mum is also back on the smokes so the temptation to rob one is unreal.

Also talking to me on AIM makes it harder.

Hey EE, going out for a smoke.

BACK, WHAT A GOOD SMOKE.

I am trying to say that when some one is trying not to smoke posting about you smoking seems counter productive.

I'm sorry what was that?

Go hold hands and dance somewhere else mr love love and emotional support.

Smokers don't need emotional support. There is only one way a person can quit, and that is if they genuinely want to. If they want to, they will stop, if they don't want to, they will not.

Yeah, that's one of the hardest parts, even if you're not chemically addicted. Like EE said, try to find something else to do on breaks. I honestly have no clue what non-smokers do during breaktime. Download a Tetris app?

I'm pretty sure that Teran's just joking. From personal experience, words are just words, and reading posts about smoking aren't as distracting as having a pack within arm's reach, or smelling the scent of a cigarette from somewhere nearby. On the other hand, pictures might be a problem though. That's how the advertisers get you.

Rule of thumb: Teran is always joking, unless he is serious.

That being said, it saddens me Sentinal, that you could not have been graced with the foresight and fortune I have to know in advance that starting to smoke would be a bad idea that would be difficult to back out of. But fret not; I'm now pleased that you are turning your life around and making a wise decision. You will have the honor of me continuing to read your journal each day.

The knowledge that someone as awesome as myself is proud of you should be ample motivation to press through the struggle. Also, always remember that if you crack and take the smoke, you'll feel much more internal pain than you'll feel physical pleasure.

The devil isn't as good in bed as people make her out to be. It's just that no one ever lives to tell about it, so it's assumed those distant moans of agony are produced by passion.

Dude, I'm not gonna lie and this is certainly not to encourage anyone else, but starting smoking was one of the best decisions I ever made imo.

Ah, the joy of a fine Cuban cigar. Ever since I ran out in '06, I can't ever find anyone selling genuine ones. DAMN THAT EMBARGO!
