What really bothers me about the racist UCLA girl video.

"I can deal with being called a ******. That is just some ******* being an *******. What really gets to me and where real racism hits home. Is when I am walking down the street, and an old white lady is walking towards me and instead of crossing paths, she crosses the street and clutches her purse."
I think that is exactly the sort of racism the girl in this video portrays. I'd be surprised if she didn't view or treat Chinese students differently (in a negative fashion) after watching that video.

Personally, there have been occasions where outward racism has hurt my feelings as much as the concealed kind though. Not that I'm chinese, but if I ever knew somebody imitated my voice and said ''ching chang ling long'' I'd feel pretty offended.

This is less her being racist and more her being ignorant and stereotypic. She apearrantly thinks all Asians are dependent on their parents, are rude, and talk like "ching chong, fling flong ding dong"..........yeah. How can she even talk about "American mannerisms" and "Being a nice American girl"? It's people like that that give Americans a bad name as being selfish, misinformed *******s. Thank God she's never going to be in any actual position of power or respect now that she's had such a bad mark on her name, we need more people with common sense and "American mannerisms" doing the important thing.

This has happened to me (and I'm white) and I can tell you it really is offensive.

Maybe the old woman has had someone try and steal from her before that was black and there are a lot of black gangs around where she lives/lived.

She has the oompa loompa tan.
That's sort of the SoCal standard, though.

"All white people are racist. In my life, the vast majority of racism I've experienced directly at me or someone I know has come from white people. In my area, white cops are the most guilty of police brutality. One shot and killed a black guy who was already down and in handcuffs. And that's just one story that happened to make the news. A lot of this stuff happens behind closed doors and doesn't get reported. I think I'm justified in my dislike of that demographic."

The problem with this line of thinking is that it does injury to people who just happen to share the same racial category. What can you really do, as an individual, about other people who look like you and go around breaking the law or committing violence? A Mexican coworker of mine once said, "It's sad. Every time someone gets killed or *****, or something else, and it's a Latino behind it, people all look down on us."

No one person can single-handedly stop gang violence or other problems that plague the community. And gangs usually recruit along racial or ethnic lines, which further perpetuates this image of minorities as violent criminals. If you are a member of that minority group, you are SOL. You could get a college degree, wear a suit, drive a nice car, but as soon as a cop pulls you over, you are assumed to be a POS like the rest. But that cop is probably only acting that way because he gets shot at every day by ****heads who really do happen to look like you.

I'm not saying I have a solution. I'm just saying the situation blows for everyone involved.

I'm sure this woman will be able to live a perfectly fine life. As time goes on, things like this will become one of those "Yeah, I was one wild teen back then" things rather than the big deal it is right now.

Also, I'm glad I have an extremely common name.

NO!

SHE NEVER SAID THAT FFS. There is an enormous difference between stating that the asians at her school are loud in the library, and saying that ALL ASIANS are rude.

But you know what, I think the most racist part of this ENTIRE video wasnt it the asians. As some said, its the way she made it sounds like all americans are well-mannered. Because clearly she made no mention that her opinions of americans were limited to american students at UCLA, she clearly meant all americans. She was racist in putting her race above others, but not in attacking another imo.

Seriously, Ive lost count of how many times im on a bus or something and a group of people of any type of racial background, even australian, start swearing, talking really loudly and just being outright ****heads. If I make a video saying that omg these kids from [insert background here] were being so rude and disrespectful today, does THAT make me a racist? For all you know, everything she said was 100% true. Thats the difference, because you cant make the calls she did about an ENTIRE race since obviously you cant know them all, as oppose to making a statement about ONLY the ones she has had interactions with.

the ching chong ling long etc, meh. If you guys deem that racist, I should brand everyone here racist who ever once said 'shrimp on the barbie'.

Historical context plays into public perception of racial slurs. Asians have, in American history, been oppressed and denied civil rights and opportunities. "Ching chong ling long" was a common phrase used by people to degrade them. Comparatively, Americans have not oppressed Australians. However, if Americans had oppressed Australians, people in Australia probably would be offended by an American mocking how they supposedly speak.

I watched the video and read the blog...but stopped reading the replies after the first page.

All I can say is, she's ignorant but I've heard a hell of alot worse. Plus she fits into a steriotype herself with the way she talks, dresses, mannerisms, etc.

All in all this video was a waste of time to watch for all the hype, not that important and the only reason it's so offensive and has spread so fast is because this generation as a whole is too damn soft.

Sneeze on me and I'll sue you.

Raise a finger at me and I'll charge you for assault.

That Mc coffee burned me and even though it says that it's hot on the lid I'm going to make the mcdonald's corporation burn in court because I'm a clumsy imcompetent fool.

Any steriotyping joke, even in fun is often see as straight up racist, sexist, whatever and a horrible horrible crime. It's treated like you blew up an orphanage or killed some kid's pet kitten with a baseball bat.

Hahaha. This video and especially the comments (The smash community and the rest of the internet) crack me up. First off, how many of you are actually Asian? I'm willing to bet in this thread I can count the amount of Asians who replied on one hand (Myself being 1 finger). I'd bet money the person who wrote that little blog isn't Asian. (If you are, I'll add you to my hand). People get so involved in things that don't even apply to them directly.

Second, do some of you even know what racism is? It doesn't matter to what extent it is racist, racism is racism.

Third, I can see how people are annoyed (Not to this extent though). People are always annoyed when others assume something about them. She doesn't know me, she just heard some random kid in the library who happened to be Asian. Come now, you all wouldn't be a little annoyed if I posted a video on youtube and was like "Smashers are all virgin nerds" because I saw a pathetic group of kids playing smash? This is something you can definitely get annoyed over, but maybe not angry.

Last, I also really doubt these people were "loud." The Asian language just sticks out more so than English in America so it will obviously catch her attention more than other people talking.

Well, in the end, I found this entire thing amusing and my last (and initial) thought is: I would tap that.

I am not Asian, but when I read posts like this it makes me want to clarify why I wrote my blog. This blog was not meant to be a stance against racism. I know the things she said weren't that bad in the grand scheme of things. In fact, in my blog I said I've heard much worse. The actual content of the video isn't the topic. The topic is about all the attention it is getting and what that is going to do to this girl.

I wrote the blog to discuss how any publicity online can have lasting effects on your future in the context of this specific video. People feel that the internet is vast enough that if they post something offensive (whether its moderate or not) that it will go unnoticed. Its a delusion of privacy.

I also wanted to discuss the recent policy of employers who search google and facebook for the names of prospective employees. You may think its unfair. You may think that your private life shouldn't have any bearing on you public career and capacity to work, but companies don't want to be represented by a person whose public life can tarnish their name.

I just can't understand why this would give her such a bad name when literally EVERY WHITE PERSON I HAVE EVER KNOWN says stuff like what she said. It honestly makes me sick.

Allowing yourself to get in the position she is in is dumb. She might not deserve the "punishment" she got, which was in fact a consequence of her own actions, but she surely initiated it. Whether she deserves it is not relevant, for she herself allowed herself to get in that situation. The massive reaction is not a decision, nor a punishment, it's a response.

Also, it's quite racist. If the story is factual is not relevant, as the way she presents it clearly shows her racist attitude.

Maybe I didn't convey my point properly, but what I was trying to say was that video didn't deserve the attention and shouldn't have gotten so much of it aside from the fact that society is how I explained.

I wrote the blog to discuss how any publicity online can have lasting effects on your future in the context of this specific video. People feel that the internet is vast enough that if they post something offensive (whether its moderate or not) that it will go unnoticed. Its a delusion of privacy.

People believe that..really? It may be huge but it's divided in neat little sections that you can get to from anywhere at anytime. And the big ones like Youtube, Myspace, Facebook etc, where any and every kind of person with all varying interests congregate, posting something there is worse than "shouting it from the rooftops."

I also wanted to discuss the recent policy of employers who search google and facebook for the names of prospective employees. You may think its unfair. You may think that your private life shouldn't have any bearing on you public career and capacity to work, but companies don't want to be represented by a person whose public life can tarnish their name.

It seems like a little over the top but hey, if it's there for the public to see, it's just as much fair game as your criminal record or whatever. So if one doesn't want something seen, they shouldn't make it public.
My responses in red ^^;

EDIT AT TUGNUS:
I would laugh because
1 It actually partly is a steriotype.
2 They couldn't just talk to me if they had a problem with me and had to whine on the internet.

Smashers are a race now?
We are.

The superior race, that is.

But to re-consider Pakman's point, what if someone else happens to put up information about you online? For instance, maybe you have your fb profile set to private, but a family member doesn't, and they put up a video of you or something that identifies who you are? That could damage your reputation, even though you weren't responsible for it.

I can't even comprehend people taking "ching chong ling long ting tong" offensively.
I can't comprehend quantum mechanics. That doesn't mean it isn't real.

Racism is a subliminal knife. I've been on the receiving end of it. It cuts you and half the time you don't even know why. Sometimes, your own anger will surprise you. Mainly because you think you're over it.

"Really?" you think. "I care about this *******'s opinion?"

You don't, not really, but it still stings.

That said, just because that vid may have a 1,000 views doesn't mean that people are permanently altered by it. It takes all of 5 seconds to post a comment on youtube. Afterward, most people moved on. It's like flipping someone off on the freeway after they cut you off. It's just that, since it's the Internet, they ended up cutting off 1,000 other people too, and now they're getting 1,000 middle fingers in return.

Come on Alphicans, that's downright offensive.

It's not like mocking us Canadians for "Canada, eh?" jokes.

The only parts I really found offensive were that, and the "Asians don't teach their children to be independent" bit.

I've heard standup comedy far worse than that.

Something along the lines of

"To me it seems like chinese parents drop an assortment of kitchen appliances to come up with names for their children," and this got massive laughs across the entire audience....

After thinking it over, I gotta ask... Were you being sarcastic Raziek?

Go away icy. You've only been funny once shoulda stopped there.

wow almost every single time i type up a response to this thread, I delete it before posting it coz I know i dealing with some seriously deep ingrained opinions right here.

Dead honest, I think the reason why people (see; americans) find this racist is because real racism has such a strong history in your country and your views are distorted because of an extreme desire to NOT be associated with the racists of the past (like the KKK). The only thing comparable in Australia afaik were the Cronulla Riots and that is NO WHERE near the scale of american racism. I think Id rather be associated with those people who rioted, than a murderous KKK member or something. Calling someone a racist in australia imo just isnt a big insult because we all know you couldnt legitimately function in this country if you were a racist, theres such a massive array of ethnic backgrounds you will run into multiple different ones every single day.

Eh seems like an off topic rant, probably is. I just used to witness her thoughts countless times as I grew up through school and uni etc about all different races, most definitely including the australians who were almost always the most obnoxious. Unless every single person ive ever known is a racist, I wouldnt call this girl a racist. Like if you imagine the line between a non-racist and a racist as being HUGE and very blurred, as it most definitely is, i would place this video at the bottom of that blurred line, bordering a total-non racist.

Because she choose to upload a video of her expressing her thoughts doesnt make her a racist, while im QUITE sure that every single student in that library who has to put up with the same rudeness and wishes they would stop, but dont say it, are also not racists. You can not legitimately draw the line between the two groups.

And what an insightful post it was!

That's why you don't put anything on the internet that you don't want everyone to find out and know.
allow me to draw a picture to sum up everything im saying here...

Just sayin, this is kind of how I see racism. It is a MASSIVELY blurred line since I find it quite hard to believe that most people dont have SOME sort of predisposition between people of another race. I would place this video and her intentions, on the blue line. (ignore the changing thickness of the red line, I dont know why I did that and it doesnt mean anything)

You're really gonna put most people at 50% racist? lol

15-20% would be average I think. This is if we're talking about the enlightened world. Not Uganda. Or Alabama.

@chingchong Offensive words are offensive becasue there offensive. Like ****. Its only a bad word because its intended to be. Sex isnt a bad word. See how SWF blotted the same thing out only once

The reason this video went viral is because of how pathetic it is. Its so easy to dislike this person because they are overweight white trash and you get an excuse to do so. Im pretty sure that hearing this person speak would annoy me even if she was holding a bake sale or some ****. It wouldn't be viral if the person was of different character or didn't use the term american manners etc.
