How can science replace philosophy if they're concerned with different things?

Smoking.

Religion too, but that sorta 'depends' on why they're religious and what religion it actually is :)

You people suck. You have to place your arrow over the little X, press enter (to close the popup messages) and click ASAP and it'll stop.

Again, you claimed that science replaces philosophy. Their goals are separate and unrelated.

You bring up wars that philosophies have brought us, but what has science done? The entire reason that world war I and II happened and were so large was because of science.

But that is far from the point. If someone asked you to sum up the basis of your life philosophy, you certainly couldn't say "science." Tell me, the way you treat women, is that based on science? Does the way you exist within your society, do you rationalize that through science? No amount of science can be used for a basis of human life because none of us are Doctor Manhattan. Your analogy implies that philosophy is long past its use, but that's not the case. Even more, I don't even think you understand the kind of philosphy I'm talking about. You talk about it like its a nations culture and religion. What I am speaking of us simply what you would study in college as philosophy, and that is the basis for rational thought on a day to day basis. Not a single question proposed by philosophy can be answered by science, nor vice versa. An apple seed can not replace an orange seed. No science class can teach me a logical thought process, only a factual basis for understanding the natural world.
I wonder what relevance this will have a 200 years from now.

1. Then why did white women never make my ***** go boing
Here's a great counter argument: Why does any ethnicity, creed, or culture make me horny then?

Because I'm not racist--you are! Congratulations!!

2. Not necessarily. Some sociologist believe that racisim is natural, as is any sort of an attempt to exclude someone different. Think back to a child, when you got upset, the other boys say "Don't act like a girl!"
That's just gendering. That's not 'different'. We often use words that represent the female to resemble traits that are undesirable for men.

It's sad we still live in a world that thinks there is something wrong with 'acting like a girl'.

Its not that a girl is a bad thing, but its DIFFERENT, and to the pack animals that we humans are, different is a bad thing. the idea is that when we see someone different, it challenges our instinct to, more or less, **** every woman alive and put our children into them. When we see someone radically different, it offends us and makes us instinctively think "If they would **** them they wouldn't **** us!" So there is some argument that racism is a natural process as it has to do with wanting a certain human trait to be passed on.
I don't even understand what you are talking about. Races mix all the time. Your point is moot. There is too much evidence it is nurture--not nature that is forging the racist ideation.

People are essentially blank slates. You can fill them up with almost any belief or any hatred. It's not hard. If racism is so natural why has it declined? Are we just fighting our intrinsic racism? lol
Bull ****. Big bull ****. Science doesn't solve ****ing anything.
Word? Like, it didn't solve the problem of getting to the moon, or quicker travel [cars, airplanes, etc.] You could say those are engineering feats, but there is science behind all of it.
It only lets us understand and manipulate. The problems that philosophy has tried to solve STILL comes NOWHERE close to being solved by science.

I am not even going to watch some stupid video. Write out what you want to say. Science does a better job explaining things than philosophy can--at least concrete things.

The human experience is NOT quantifiable.
This is my personal problem with that statement--and some of you will have to bear with me on this one, but if everything in the universe is quantifable, and we are constructed of quantifiable structures and yes, we are an emergent property--we don't exist with all of these things together...what makes our experience unquantifable? Because we lack the ability? Or because it just isn't? I feel because we are in the picture we cannot see it. I feel that once we reach some level of advanced AI where it can pass a turing test we'll start to see people seeing the human experience as quantifable. Because it is. You're not beyond nature. It just requires a understanding. But the human experience can be quantified to some degree. Just, not fully.

Tell me, what equation is going to teach me how to live my life? What equation is going to teach me how best to comprehend my situation currently from a life standpoint? Science does little to nothing to help with the soul's problems. Social sciences themselves 1. aren't respected by other scientist and 2. are even less concreate and offer less answers than philosophy has.
So, now you suppose a soul. Please define a soul. And social sciences are I believe more accurate at showing us the human experience than let's say...psychology. Because psychology separates us from our real experience--the social one. We are social animals. I don't think you understand sociology.

So tell me, I want to know how to rationalize my on coming death in a way that my mind can appreciate it. What part of science is going to help me with that? What part of science is going to comfort me through that? And what part of science is going to teach me how a person should be? None. Philosophy struggles with the unanswerable questions. Science struggles only with that which can be answered 100 percent.
What part of science? Well, for myself personally...

I think that the fact I will essentially degrade into nothingness to be reabsorbed--it makes me feel useful, and it affirms me with my planet. I enjoy that knowledge. Science brings me a real inner peace--well, not science, but certainly some scientific subject matter. Biology specifically makes me feel quite great about my life, and my death.

I fear it, but I know it will have to come, and it is necessary for there to be any driving mechanism for us to all get here.

Why do people think they need some divine answer to solve their woes? Why not accept what you know, or what you don't and leave it at that?

I actually like Superspright. We share a lot of similar opinions and attitudes.

Aside from that debate we had earlier, which, I think, was a miscommunication.

I would say that my biggest turn offs are people who argue in threads that are supposed to be fun.
Just sayin'

Superspright: I'm glad someone agrees with me on ths subject.

Philosophy doesn't do jack. To say that science doesn't explain everything is a joke. Science isn't perfect, it is still evolving, hence the fact that it doesn't answer everything. What is the purpose of philosphy other than "what if" or "I think"? Is that even a purpose? No. It isn't. Science is way more useful. =)

I should mention that whenever I let gas go I lose all, 100 percent of my sex drive, no matter what I'm doing.
