I was just browsing around some old videos before I unplug my computer for my move to washington and i came across a few videos...

first i watched this one because i remember it being funny (you dont have to watch this one it's just a montage connor made of a random chapman tourney where i talk a lot lol)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1yUDIeLGoY

than it just sort of hit me, i used to be so happy back then, tournaments were so much fun... interacting with everyone was a blast you could joke around about everything and pretty much everyone was having a good time, but what really sealed the deal on the "what happened to the community" was when i found these videos

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAfqFqCUVZ0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGbsYaSuVc0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idZVqnsShs0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=go8_f1NIimA

Seriously, look at how happy everyone is, how much everyone is enjoying themselves

very VERY little of this has to do with the game at all, but it seems like the life has just been sucked out of everyone, it's been happening so gradually we all seem to have missed it...

It's seriously depressing to watch these videos now, good friends have faded away and the pure joy of going to tournaments has all but completely died...

what happened? why did it come to this? Does it REALLY ralate to the game we are playing THAT much? I can't imagine it would... perhaps that community was just built in a way that can never be replicated due to the lack of online functionality and the intense rivalries built up over time because of it... but it's really sad to look back at the all the joy that was going on and compare it to what we see at tournaments now...

I don't know, I was just feeling nostalgic so i made a thread.

i used to be happyfish62 and now i'm frustratedfish62 more often than not, i know things wont ever be like they were, but can't we all try to do SOMETHING about it?

I think it's because all of the new brawl people are like, anti-social and they get weirded out when they hear "EAT A D!CK" :(

[This isn't directly to you, Gimpy, but everyone who says "/wrists Brawl changed the community for the worst".]

[And: I'll miss you <3]

Look.

I've been in a lot of online communities, probably before some of you were born. I've known a lot of amazing people and spent a lot of great time interacting with people online and off.

...and I have to say that it's a myth that any particular community is more special than another. Yes, I said it.

Let's see... I've been in amazing guilds in Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, City of Villains, and Lord of the Rings Online. I've worked on mods and websites for Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander. I contributed to Wikipedia and wiki's in general for a dozen different games. And never mind the stuff I've done in and for the Smash community.

Through all these experiences I've meet really cool people that I would gladly call my friends. Sometimes we've been guildmates, sometimes partners in a development project, sometimes just people we've run into at a social gathering. These people are no more abundant in the Smash community than elsewhere, and in general we get along for the same reasons as in other communities. In the end we're all nerds or gamers or whatever, and we're brought together through a common interest. Just because that interest changes from one site to another doesn't mean the connections get any stronger.

I dunno where I'm going with this. It's late and Grandpa Neal needs his sleep.

What I'm trying to say is: this "new" community isn't any different from the Old Melee Guard. It really isn't. You think tournaments are "different" because you go to them expecting to know everyone and do the same jokes over and over... except now you don't know everyone, and rather than just chill out and learn new faces and names, you'd rather write an emo post and lament the glory days of yesteryear. Don't you see how it's a self fulfilling prophecy? You honestly sound like an old grandpa sitting on his porch lecturing his grandkids about how life used to be better back when he was a kid.

In summary: just because your individual pod of friends is changing doesn't mean the community as a whole is any different. You'll find equally cool people if you look around and give newcomers a chance. We're still playing a game designed for 12 year olds, so the average age and mentality hasn't changed at all. It's just your perception of the transition from Melee to Brawl. The constant negativity doesn't help, of course; you can't spend half the day bashing Brawl and then go to a tournament expecting to meet cool people. You hate the game and therefore hate the players and use it as an excuse for why things are "changing."

[/ramble]

[just a reminder that this isn't specifically to you, Gimpy, nor do all the points reference things you've personally said.]

There's nothing wrong with feeling nostalgic, gimpy. I don't know exactly how you feel or what you're thinking, but I haven't noticed any change except that our love for Melee has been replaced with a hatred of Brawl. I honestly can't remember the last Melee tournament I went to where someone didn't say, "you can't do that in brawl," or, "so-and-so is more technical than Brawl."

I've been a part of this too, and after reading your post and posting this, I'm going to definitely try to stop. Instead of being angry and upset that Brawl came out and ruined all our hopes and expectations (which I think is also a part of what you are feeling), we should just move on and either keep playing Melee and loving it, or move on to Brawl. I think it was neal who said that it takes years for rivalries to form like the ones at SCC or Pound 3, and I don't think that'll be any different with Brawl, or if Melee's scene ever picks back up. (which I'm hoping it will)

I know it sounds cliche, but stop living in the past. ;) Melee is still here, and although the community is smaller, the tournaments are still hella fun and I love going to them more than ever.

Yea, those are my thoughts as well, Something. I wont let the community die so easily, A lot of people have been telling me to stop trying to keep melee alive and just convert to brawl. But I just cant just stand by while this melee community may or may not die. So I am doing something about it. A lot of people are also saying stop living in the past, but I have melee in my cube a few from me. and its going to be there a month from now. Brawl will be here, melee will here.

Im holding a tournament in about a month that has melee has the primary attraction, its a melee tournament. Brawl will "be" there. But so will melee, the point is melee's still here and its not going anywhere so why are we acting like we cant reach over to our case take out melee, put it in the cube and press power?

I have to agree with Neal here, really. I honestly don't notice any difference in the general community. A lot of the good friends I made through Smash don't go to tournaments anymore, but I've met new people who are just as cool. I really don't see any differences from the Brawl community to the Melee community at all.

Seriously the problem is that once you've done something you forget how you got there. I remember going to my first tournament by myself, I knew nobody. I got used to knowing everyone at tournaments too, but then Brawl came out and it was back to how it used to be when I first entered Melee tournaments. But, if you talk to everyone and get to know them, you'll see that everyone here is really cool too. Personally I'm pretty happy at tournaments, just as I've always been, and seems like its the same for those around me, except the people who keep complaining that Brawl sucks. That's the only negative thing I've seen in the community since Brawl came out. Other than that it is exactly as it was to me 3 years ago.

Tournaments are going to be what you make of them, Gimpy. If you go in expecting great people, good atmosphere, you'll see that it's there. I really, really am having a hard time understanding how things have changed at all..Everyone I've met at Brawl tournies that I didn't know during Melee is EXTREMELY friendly.

I actually never went to a melee tourney, but I can sort of imagine from videos and stuff what it was like when you were with a group of friends just playing. Even though I didn't go to a melee (or even a video game tourney ) before brawl game out, I think I have an idea of why things are the way they are now.

Most of the "new" people coming in don't really know much about how tourneys are "fun". They are coming to the tournament to win. When they think of tournament, they think....I am going there to win, and I don't know anyone there. They aren't going there to hang out with anyone or have a good time at all. They see the entire community as separate people coming to tourneys instead of a group having fun at a tourney while still trying to win.

Another reason is that brawl hasnt been out long. You can't have many rivals in a game that hasnt been out more than a few months.

Go to tourneys, meet new people....meet people at tourneys you met online. Just give it some time and go for fun and to meet new people and have fun.

THIS POST IS PROBABLY TOTALLY JUMBLED BUT OH WELL, HOPEFULLY YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT IM TRYING TO SAY.

I completely agree with Neal and Edrees <3

What I have noticed lately, is the lack of regional support. The rivalries used to be between east and west coast. Now it feels like So cal is divided within itself. We have players going out and representing our region in out of state tournaments, and no one has been morally supportive. AZ cheered for our So Cal players more than So Cal did. Nor Cal has cheered for our players more than So cal.
There have always been those certain players that people didn't like, but now every time someone has a problem with someone else they start a thread. This site was supposed to be for finding local tournaments and making friends. Not publicly humiliating people, and tearing down the community with pessimism.
I really like a lot of the new brawl players. And I've honestly gotten to know a lot of melee players better, like plan 9, futile, lovage and all of oxnard. Coachella valley is great too.
People just need to give things a chance. Give new people a chance. And remember that we all represent the So Cal region, so whether we like it or not, we're in this together.

Its so true. I wanted to say something beforehand but I was afraid that I'd get flamed.

But anyway. I just think that the community hasn't changed at all. Of course, there are people that left and at the same time, we get new people. That's just how I feel. In fact, I'm making more friends nothing like before.

I still love the community. Its great.

edrees how can you say you've met anyone as cool as me knives or MikeY

didn't haze already make this thread?

I feel we should make brawl/melee tournies, I don't understand why we have to seperate the communities, it seems to me those who prefer melee attend brawl tournies for the community, and those in the brawl community who still like melee only go to brawl tournies cuz there's more of the community there.

I blame P

Well, it's kind of difficult to run 4 separate events in one day, and even if you attempt to do so, you run into time constraints and other issues.

Then there's those who are unwilling to compromise with the "other side," and so on. Seems to me that a large majority of people on both sides of the spectrum either don't choose to get involved with the actual running of the tournaments (at this point at least, can you blame them really?), or are just simply apathetic about the smash community as a whole.

I'm going to go ahead and say that Brawl really has split the community, no matter how you look at it. Of course, it's not the game's fault, nor anyone's in particular, but things like these are bound to happen when something new is released. Brawl's a different enough game that some have taken it up and dropped competitive Melee for good. Saddens me a bit to see this happening, but there's no real solution unless we get support from the community as a whole to continue supporting both events.

Just my two cents; I may be a bit out of touch since I'm basically gone from competitive smash as well.

I really really love this community. Melee or Brawl, tournaments with you guys are ****.

Claire: I think the rivalries and support will be really strong, the new players just need more time to get to know everyone. It's not that anyone is anti-social, everyone's just new.

EDIT: Crap, this is Awex, Ghetto Soldier's logged in on my computer.

Pretty sure if it's your first tournament you're not going to be laughing and joking around with other smashers, especially when 75% of the jokes made are inside jokes.

It's not easy to disagree with Neal.

Well I think it's based on how social those individuals are.

Like NCB was my first real-legit tournament I went to. I when I got there I knew like... 2 people, Pocky and Falcomist.

It's all about meeting new people. At the tourney I met sooo many people, you just gotta be willing to talk.

This is exactly what I think except that I don't think a lot of people are going to these tournies to "win". I mean, I know I certainly am not and the people I have met certainly aren't (except those that are consistently winning anyway). I don't have any delusions of grandeur and know full well my R.O.B. ain't the **** when compared to like...well a lot of the people at those tournies, lol. I simply just wanna play with good people, lol. I feel like I'd much rather have these tournies be massive Smashfests than tournies anyway, but the tourney format itself is hella fun to begin with.

Right now, the only difference I am seeing between the Melee community, which I was somewhat involuntarily involved with due to a friend kinda being entrenched in the Melee community himself freshman year (I remember Edrees coming in every Thursday across the bathroom to play Eddie all the time), and Brawl is that Melee had established friendships and rivalries while in Brawl such things are just starting to develop. And so far, it's all just been really cool man.

i'm sure it's been stated already, but it's just the fact that the community is getting bigger shallows out the depth of the relationships people form from playing with the same people for the past few years

the first brawl tournament i went to was at champ's house and that was fun and relaxed as hell and also featured the first ever brawl crews battle .. people were just generally having a good time

the ones at shuffle seem a little more stressed out though .. i think the setting / people plays a bigger role

Pat's smashfests: Every Melee lover's solution :)
Nice one!

Well I'm on the fence with this one

I do agree with gimpy somewhat(The Melee community is fun/Some Brawl people are douchebags)
Everyone who goes to my smashfests are awesome! All of them are cool!
And we have a blast!

I do agree with neal somewhat(I've met brawl players who I've become good friends with)
I do dislike Brawl but I don't mind playing it and meeting new people

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion

since brawl came out there are no more oregon threads lol.
=[
that's cause theyre all on AllIsBrawl

I have my theories pertaining to the main question, but work ends in 4 minutes and the time spent to type em would be better spent doing something else.

Heres a small tidbit though. There are many things we grew up to about Melee and learned to love. In time, some people got over it, some still haven't. Thsoe are people who prefer Brawl, or Melee, repsectively. Of course this applies to pre-Brawl players.

The new players amuse me. i.e. Shroomed

oh hey, look my smashboards account is still active lol.

Are you likely to join a crew as DEEP as DEEPSOCAL?

I don't thinkkk so.

Are the new guys likely to tell each other to CALLLLMMMM DOOWNNNN?? Will they post and maintain a 20 page thread on a fake fight they had, JUST to piss off HUGO?

Will they go ranting about being top 5 and never attend tournies?

Will Champ ever pass his English course?? That's my biggest concern.

Oh and i totally disagree with Neal because he's terrible at everything. He's even bad at being a nerd.(he's actually liked for his overdrift series- KEEP IT UP NEAL!)

Also, if anyone is to be blamed for the Brawl community sucking, it should be me.
Without my amazing jokes and racist insults, things have just fallen apart.

Don't worry guys, i'm coming back in 2010, when allisbrawl.com is nothing but a 404 URL and shattered dreams of what could have been an amazing community if indeed it had been named allisknivez(s)fox/marth/sheik_pro.com/top_5_amazing.html

calm down.

I think it all depends on who you are and maybe how you look at things. I'm 18 and just recently started going to tournaments and I have a blast every time! I think maybe you got so used to going that they became routine instead of a special occasion. And maybe its a little bit like christmas, once you know the truth the magic begins to fade until you find that you don't enjoy for the joy it brings you, but for the joy it bring to the ones who are close to you but younger and still believe. Moving might solve this, new people etc. but its all in the way you make it.
