Although I am an active gamer, I believe that the word '****' shouldn't be used for anything than what it actually means.

INCORRECT WAYS TO USE THE WORD '****:'
1. wow u got ***** lol (when said while playing a video game)
2. this thread is ****
3. ahhh ****
4. god im gettin ****in ***** by dat sniper

Seriously, **** is not a laughing matter. And for those who say it is, have you ever been *****? I think not. I'm not overreacting. I just believe that other words should be used instead of this one.

Post your thoughts.

Well, if you take **** away(weird sentence) people might think of a worse word.
It's like with the word "Gay".

Yeah, this thread is just like the other one with the word "gay". We've established there that it's all about context, since we're not talking about actually ****** someone. And it's not like you can stop thousands of people using the word.

Were you the one who ***** her by any chance?

It's not so much the word, but the feeling people put behind it. Like they're rubbing it in your face that you may have been headshotted or whatnot.

I've never seen someone who's actually been ***** annoyed by the usage of the word. It's always people who think for some reason that people who've been ***** would be offended by others using the word. And they always say "I haven't been *****, but think about how someone who was ***** would feel."

Lol CA5H you're barking up the wrong tree... I tried to create a forum here about why I thought saying "gay" every god**** sentence as a derogatory slur was wrong and I got a bunch of pretentious quips from people saying "YOU CANT CHANGE ME" and replies saying my thread was gay... It's probably still on the front page even though it's closed. Maybe it inspired you?

Also, I love the morons that think because they have a friend who is gay or who has been ***** and they're ok with the word being said, then OH YEAP MUST BE OK DEN. Gotta love ignorance among the youth.

Also... NEITHER HE NOR I WERE TRYING TO CHANGE YOU. I have to put that in capital letters so everyone gets the idea. I at least wasnt trying to change thousands of gamers, so drop that ****ing comment ok guys? It's not what I think CA5H is trying to do so quit that ****.

Well for what it's worth, I'm extremely against using terms like GAY or ****** or ****... So I can support you 110% on this my man, if you wanna talk with someone about it, my aim is: Prest0ne8.

I'm a serial killer, my friend's sister was murdered by a serial killer, but she's still cool with me killing, so serial killing must be ok then.

I guess if using the word **** is ok, we should start using the word yank to imply stupidity, considering the stereotype of all Americans being overly nationalist and generally ignorant.

I don't really agree with this stereotype, I think it does injustice to Americans, but of course you guys won't mind because using offensive terminology is fine here, plus I know one of my American friends won't find it offensive, and I know because one of my freinds will receive it positively, it's obviously going to be received positively universally, because people's opinions and feelings don't differ at all.

Hmm...I agree with C45H and Falco (MOP). I am against using the term "****" in a gaming context.

While I understand the context and analogy (it's an accurate metaphor) to the actual meaning, I still feel that it disrespects the traumatic aspect.

I know a lot of people who have been *****, and honestly. I think the majority of them had it coming.

What I mean by this is...

-Cybering with guys through the internet then meeting them
-Drinking/doing drugs then getting *****
-Wearing a miniskirt.

Someone made a thread earlier about the word gay, and nothing was accomplished. You can't force people to change how they talk, that's the reality of it. If you don't like saying it, then continue to not say it, but people generally don't like to be told what to say and do, especially on the internet, so good luck with this thread.

Even if you're just trolling, that's just really low and pathetic.

Although to be honest, low and pathetic is kinda expected on Smashboards, you're always going to get that with adolescents.

Kinda like how people are saying 'you can't change the way people talk etc'. Yeah because it's perfectly ok going around offending people...

And saying you know who someone who's been ***** and isn't offended by it doesn't mean anything, because 1. There will be plenty of others who are offended by it, I personally know of some who would be, and 2. you don't have to be *****, jew, black, gay etc. to be offended by said ignorance.

This. I've heard people who have been ***** use the word "****" casually. I've heard gay people use derogatory terms for gay people. Black people use the N-word all the time. Women regularly call each other female dogs.

If they aren't offended, why should I be?

LuigiToilet It's easy for you to say when your life hasn't been tormented by a man who sexually violated you, and have nightmares about frequently and have issues ever trusting men again.

Are you American? You sound like one.

Gauis other people are offended by it.

I'm supposed to speak a certain way so that I don't offend YOU, despite the fact that whatever I'm saying doesn't apply to you at all?

Yeah, okay.

You really don't act like someone who's been violated like that. I doubt if something that traumatic happened in your life you'd be so insensitive about it.

I'm normally laid back when people are being mischevious and trolling, or when people say I'm an idiot for beleiving in God etc. But **** is a serious issue, it's not to joke about.

Are you aware right now some poor girl could have looked at your post, reviving horrid memories of her traumatic experience, causing her emotional agony?

Also, there are lots of young kids on these boards, whos parents wouldn't want their kids exposed to that sort of language, especially because young kids are impressionable and can come desensitised to this sort of thing.

I could just go around saying Americans are all overly-nationalistic fools who the rest of the world hates because of there ignorance, and I bet people who think saying **** and n***a and jew jokes etc. would all get offended/annoyed.

It's just about curtousy for other people, why is that so hard for people to grasp, it's not as if you're losing anything drastic by not saying these derogatory things.

Why do I have to be ***** to have a right to be offended by it? I also know someone who's been *****, does that count?

So you think you have no responsibility to people around you to be respectful of them? So you feel it's perfectly ok for me to swear around little kids, insult jews, gays, blacks etc. simply because I don't want to have to change for other people?

Come on you have to admit that is selfish.

Edit: Sorry for the double post.

Now who's being ignorant? You say it's not okay to go around offending people (which is obviously true), and that using your personal experiences with people in a certain group to form an image about the whole is not okay (example: you're friend that was ***** is okay with it....) but then immediately do the same.

Of course you don't have to use such derogotary words yourself, but you are hardly in any position to criticize others for doing so.

Why focus on this one particular word? What makes this one word so much worse than the rest? I am of the opinion that the words themselves should have no real impact, only the meaning (IN CONTEXT) behind the words should. To me and many others within the community (I assume) the phrase "man, you just got *****," is in no way more offensive than "man, you just got destroyed," (in fact the opposite may be true, simply because the word "destroyed" takes longer to say and is often more memorable) When using the word ****, we have absolutely no intention of downplaying such a very serious action. It is just using the alternate meaning of a word, as words meanings are determined by how they are used, NOT the other way around.

If you got the majority of your community to use the word "yank," in the manor you described, then I would take being called yank as an insult, because of the implied meaning. In that context it would not be a derogatory term to refer to Americans as, it would simply mean "idiot" and I would take it as such (and still be offended at being called an idiot <_<.) Words are only a part of what we use to communicate, and as long as the message is understood then it shouldn't really matter what word is used.

Of course that's just my personal opinion, and is my reasoning for interchanging derogatory terms when insulting somebody. It is also the reason I'm not insulted when such terms are used while trying to compliment me (dude, that last combo was "****"), or used in a more playful manner (close friend saying "oh ****, did you see that? I totally destroyed your last stock!"), as I'm not really too personally offended by small bits of gloating in the first place.

CA5H said:

So what you're really asking for (or rather simply bringing to others attention) is that people be nicer to each other.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you would probably be offended by any remarks designed to belittle a player, or anything that would represent gloating (understandably of course, as that is the sole purpose of the remarks). So the word "****" itself isn't really all that important, as similarly used terms (in this context) such as destroy, trash, own, ect convey the same message. Are those any better? And if so, why?

People deal with things in different ways.

I'll say it again. The word didn't do anything. If you go through your whole life this uptight over words you're going to have a miserable life.

Although Dre, you did bring up a good point with your last post, and I'll take time to comment on it (I agree with you).

Just saving this post space for before you reply to my post.

Why do I have to be ***** to have a right to be offended by it? I also know someone who's been *****, does that count?
Being offended by the word and being offended by the act are two completely different things. Though it's not really my place to judge you in what you are offended by.
So you think you have no responsibility to people around you to be respectful of them? So you feel it's perfectly ok for me to swear around little kids, insult jews, gays, blacks etc. simply because I don't want to have to change for other people?
I like this part. People should take into consideration that it's not just their group of friends that will see these messages, and out of common courtesy censor their messages when they know it will be in full view of those who would probably be negatively influenced by it.

By the same token, use of such terms in common speach is a reality, something that likely won't change any time soon. With that in mind, would it not also be the reader's responsibility to be less sensitive about the words themselves and pay more attention to the context in which they are used? The poster is obviously not trying to insult them, so why take it as such?

This doesn't apply to the desensitizing of children of course, but if someone can find their way to a forum (a relatively clean forum like this might I add. There are plenty of places worse than smashboards), I'm sure they can find their way to many other sites where they'd be exposed to such terms (and worse, search filtering doesn't cover all types of offensive material after all)

No I'm not saying Smashboards entirely comprises of low and pathetic people, there are many great people here, I'm just saying that with large populations of adolescents you normally going to get people like that.

I understand no one means harm when they use the word ****, but people can still be traumatised by it. If you're just with your friends who you know are cool with it, then I guess there's no real problem other than that it's still a bad word, but on a board, where many people are exposed to it, it's a different story.

There's also the problem of little children, alot of parents don't want their kids exposed to that sort of language at such a young age, and when they're so impressionable they can become desensitised to that sort of thing.

Using the word **** on a board is like swearing infront of little children, although it's just a words and you mean no harm, it's a bad word and shouldn't be sued in front of them, but even then the word **** can have more traumatic effects than swearing.

I don't look down on people who have different opinions to me, Darksonic I'm happy to discuss this with you because we can both be civilised about it, what I don't like is when people joke about ****, when it's a very serious issue and not something to joke about.

I think what you should really be against is the act of ****, not the word in a different context.

its just a synonym for domination.

Yeah I understand that, but the word can still revive traumatic experience, and it's still not something that should be said on a board with plenty of little kids.

For example F*** is just a word, but it should not be said around young kids for obvious reasons.

I think also using it light-heartedly realy disrespects what the word means, and those people who have suffered it, it desensitises people as well.

To be honest, and I know alot of young guys aren't going to care for this, but I think the fact that we can say such a bad word as if it were nothing suggests that the desensitation process of our youth has already commenced.

I don't worry about offending people who don't really have a reason to be offended. That includes people who have not been *****, yet somehow find the word offensive.

The strange part is that I mostly agree with you. I use the word far too often on this site, forgetting that others will look at the word itself in a way I had not intended. I guess I'll stop using the word myself (there are many substitues afterall) if it'll prevent a couple people from being offended.

I don't expect others to do so though, as using the lingo makes some people feel more like they're part of a community (at some level) and I can't exactly ask them to stop. It is selfish, but it's also a boost to their self esteem with no ill intentions behind it, something I'm rather hardpressed to find in real life.

Dre. said:

This is the part where our philosophies disagree (as fas as I can tell).

What the word means is...whatever the community agrees it means. The act itself is a very serious matter sure, and you won't find me or my friends joking about it (though some groups do, and so long as no one in the group is offended by it I don't care what they joke about). The word however has no significance, unless the person reading it GIVES it significance.

Perhaps I am already "desensitised" for not caring what people say to each other. But is being "desensitised" even a bad thing? So long as people understand that the act itself is wrong, I see no harm in the word being used for something else (though that condition will never really be met unfortunately, as people tie words and actions together very closely)

I don't worry about offending people who don't really have a reason to be offended. That includes people who have not been *****, yet somehow find the word offensive.
But then you have the problem of establishing who has the right to be offended by certain things.

That's like making a jew joke infront of me and saying I don't have the right to be offended, then I later find out my Grandmother was half jew, or that a distant relative of mine was killed in the Holocaust, then all of a sudden I have a right to be offended by it and you can't say it to me anymore.

To avoid things like that, I feel it's best people avoid words that are just offensive in general, it's not as if there's really anything significant to lose from it.

As I said before, there's no real problem just saying it amongst your friends who you know are cool with it, apart from it still being a bad word and representing the desensitisation of modern youth, but on boards with little kids and people who can be offended it's a different story.

At DarkSonic: About the gamer slang, I personally don't like noob, epic win/fail, 10chars, and alot of the other terminology, but I would never try stop people from using that because I just realise that's my personal opinion. The **** word issue is based on consideration for others and moral prinicples.
