I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but as far as franchises that have already appeared in Super Smash Bros. go, I feel like the only ones that need a newcomer are Donkey Kong, Metroid, Fire Emblem, and Kid Icarus.
-Donkey Kong has undergone a massive increase in popularity under Retro's guidance, to the point where it's as big of a franchise for Nintendo as it was when Rare was making the games
-Metroid has roughly tripled in size since the original Super Smash Bros. - I find it kind of silly that it hasn't gotten a second character yet
-I don't really think I need to explain Kid Icarus
-Fire Emblem Awakening is, far and away, the best-selling Fire Emblem game. At this point, I feel like the series has earned a third character - they can keep Ike and add Chrom, Robin, or Lucina (I have no idea who's more popular)
As for other series, I figure that Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon are well-represented as it is (assuming that Mewtwo is brought back, though he doesn't count as a newcomer). Wario and Yoshi seem to be fine with one representative - Yoshi may be in a similar boat as Metroid, with only having one character since the first instalment of Smash Bros., but the Yoshi series hasn't undergone the massive expansion that the Metroid series has, and most of the characters in Yoshi's games are generally found in Mario games as well.
Star Fox and Earthbound seem to be fine - the biggest issue is the complete lack of new material to draw from, and while there are potential newcomers for both series, I don't feel like they're necessarily needed. Kirby's got the core trio of characters, which seems to represent the series perfectly. Olimar seems to represent the Pikmin series well enough on his own; the Pikmin 3 captains would likely play similarly to him, but with slightly different Pikmin line-ups, and while it's possible to toss around ideas of enemies, like the Plasm Wraith, they don't seem necessary or likely. As for F-Zero, having Captain Falcon fight was enough of a stretch - while that series has a lot of characters, they don't really do much outside of their vehicles.
Then there's the one-offs, like Ice Climbers, R.O.B., and Game & Watch. There isn't really anything else that could be added for those three.
If they just put in a newcomer or two for the four series that I mentioned, and focused on adding new series into Smash Bros., I'd be okay with that.
