The 2016 hype for Sun and Moon was great. It was the first time I'd gotten truly hyped for a Pokemon game. I'd been excited for them in the past, but I didn't exactly follow trailers or pre-order them. Sun and Moon changed that.

Unfortunately it felt a little half-baked to me, not living up to its full potential. I hoped that Ultra Sun and Moon might be the second go that could realize that potential, but from what I've picked up, it had even more problems, so I have yet to play it myself.

Gen VIII should be very interesting, though, especially if it's Nintendo's blockbuster Switch title for 2019. It can't just be "another" Pokemon game. It's going to have to be something major and revolutionary that'll really surprise people.

The USUM "hype" cycle was incredibly dull outside of Rainbow Rocket, and even that was at the very end.

For a good while it was a whole lot of nothing.

USUM was literally just the equivalent of the third games, like Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platnium

Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were pretty much the least hyped up Pokemon games in a long time.

The pre-launch cycle was less hype and more cautious than anything else.

What was with the push for Lycanroc? I never heard anyone talk about it back during the leadup and subsequent release of Sun and Moon, but then last year with Smash on the horizon, Lycanroc was suddenly the new hotness. The only Gen VIII Pokemon I heard a lot of hype for consistently was Decidueye.
