No matter how ****ty a tournament is, I always have fun. That doesn't mean anything.

But Sunday tournaments means that a lot of people cant travel from NorCal. Some people work on Sundays. People who have early morning class on Monday wont want to go. etc.

Socal people have no excuse to pass on a Sunday tournament. It's not like you're all being inconvenienced to the point where you're unable to handle travel/school/work johns simply because it's taking place on Sunday.

As if you're all so special that you can refuse a nationally recognized tournament event that is traveling to YOUR area, hosting YOUR outdated game, simply because it's mildly inconvenient for you...

All you "I'll pass" douchebags need to realize what you are being offered in terms of opportunity. It's a great , well known tournament series, run by a great host, and it's making it's way to Socal to reach better numbers than it could in WA.

I hope you don't pass on this, then go to a 9 man tournament the following Sunday here in Socal...
and wonder why you lost 9 bucks overall after winning teams and placing 3rd in singles.

Really Socal, don't be divas. You really shouldn't be buzzkilling everyone by saying you can't/won't go. And if you really can't make it, quit acting like you're important enough to say "Eww Sunday? No thanks" and omit any real reasons for why you can't attend.

Norcal, I completely understand your situation and I highly doubt you would all pass on this tournament had it taken place in your area.

I'm absolutely going to this, as I think it's a crime to have a Melee tournament series reach higher numbers in Washington than in Southern California.

well, it's still a $15 venue fee + $10 per event tournament

and if you consider that out of region mostly won't go (since it's a sunday), why would socal players want to shell out double/triple the price they usually pay to play the same players?

Because they should understand that supporting their own tournaments is the first step in encouraging OOS attendance, whether or not it is convenient for ALL out of staters. I'm willing to bet that many OOSers would be willing to deal with the inconvenience if Socal decides to show full support.

For everyone that is tired of playing the same people, support your scene and watch the new players come. That's how it works. It doesn't work the other way around.

As smashers, most of us are willing to make a few sacrifices when it all seems worth it. Even OOS smashers with school the next day will at times say "**** it, I guess I'm coming to class without sleep." Even I have done it, and I'm notorious for being uptight with responsibility. But never have I considered making any kind of effort to show up OOS when the players from that region are backing out of their own tournament.

With that in mind, it should be easy to see why saying "I'll be there for sure" goes a long way to start a chain reaction for OOS attendance.

I'm making a ****load of effort to attend this as of now, since I'll be teaming with M2K in Melee. Hopefully see everyone there.

What Hugo said (quit being *****es)
I'm not going to SoCal to NOT play SoCal. I ****ing hate SoCal. If you guys make it a waste of time, I ****ing hate SoCal even more.

lol @ getting mad for people having lives

it's a hobby dude.
I don't think HUGS' point was that people are *****es for not being able to come but more like being immature about it and posting "i'll pass". If you're not attending, don't post at all.

HURR DURR.

we're doing people a favor by saying we're not showing up. i mean this tourny doesn't look likely to get all that many people, which saves OOS money if they decide it's not worth it. isn't that better than no one saying anything and them assuming socal is gonna show up? honesty is the best policy

Socal brawl pulls a lot of people. Socal melee can pull a lot of people. People whine that coming to WA for arguably one of the best hosts in all of smash isn't a good enough reason when the turnout isn't what they want.

We brought the tournament to socal, so that more people will show up and have NO EXCUSE when its in their backyard, and when WA has to fly down to it too.

ally and m2k are coming too. so yeah. miss out on playing with the best in melee and brawl if you want.

Schedule: (Subject to change)
Friday May 7th - TBD (if anything)
Saturday May 8th - Brawl 1v1, Brawl 2v2 and Halo3 4v4
Sunday May 9th - Melee 1v1, Melee 2v2, MW2 4v4, SF4

Why not put Brawl and Melee on Saturday and MW2 and Halo 3 on Sunday?

I'll bet my life that I have more of a life than anyone on this thread who thinks they have too much of a life to attend this tournament...

And I'm still attending.

You do have a point here. But like I said earlier, you're all not important enough to chime in and say "Uhh Sunday? No thanks" as if your lack of attendance is indicative of the rest of Socal's behavior towards this tournament.

I don't mean importance as far as talent.
I mean, do you usually carpool 5 people to a tournament? Does your crew not go if you don't go? Do you even show up to tournaments usually? If not, then your lack of attendance is unimportant, so don't act like it gives any indication of Socal's attendance.

****, it takes 5 people to say "i'm going" to make up for 1 douche that said "I'm too cool for this, I'll pass".

LoL "We have lives", get the f*** out of here with your part time schoolin, part time jobbin, dry d*** havin a$$

You guys don't do s***

But really, a solution would be to at least start melee on Saturday, so that the finishing rounds of both melee and Brawl can be finished on Sunday. Has anyone addressed why this can't happen? Other than the fact that Melee players are divas who can't stand breathing the same air as brawlers?

 "Having more of a life" has nothing do with it. Priorities son.

But I do see your point. And from your point of view, I can see why you think people should not announce their lack of interest and absence.

But then again, you say we're not important enough to announce it. If that's the case, why does it matter what we say? Our importance (or lack thereof) should speak for itself.

you mean aside from literally every other tournament being held on saturday and this on sunday?

when WA has to fly down
their decision. the only people we owe anything to are ourselves.

miss out on playing with the best in melee and brawl if you want.
personally i have zero interest in playing m2k. never have played him and never want to actually

Purposefully Discouraging people from attending isn't cool.
fyp. posts like these are why you're so annoying. you give your limited little kid perspective but lack the foresight to think anything through.

I'll bet my life that I have more of a life than anyone on this thread who thinks they have too much of a life to attend this tournament...

And I'm still attending.
I was gonna post what Kouryuu said (word for word): Priorites son. And having a life is one of those dumb cliched statements that has been ruined by misuse; personally my initial use of it was tongue in cheek. I mean, who really cares why someone can make it on Saturday but not Sunday? The fact is they can't make it.

You do have a point here. But like I said earlier, you're all not important enough to chime in and say "Uhh Sunday? No thanks" as if your lack of attendance is indicative of the rest of Socal's behavior towards this tournament.
That's how YOU see it but that's not how the individual person sees it. There is no rule saying someone can't post unless they're "important." In reality it's this simple: "Oh, I can't make this! Tear." I mean if there were a line of people saying they could go and hyping up the tournament, and then a line of douchebags comes in and says they can't make it... well yeah, you'd have a point. If the rest of socal is going, then if anything seeing a bunch of people saying they CAN'T go would prime them to say they CAN go just so GC doesn't get the wrong idea.

so don't act like it gives any indication of Socal's attendance.
the lack of people asking for teammates / saying they're going = indication of socal's attendance

self-serving bull****
In the grand scheme of things this is ALL self-serving bull****. If you had no emotional investment in this chances are we wouldn't be getting a lecture from grandpa hugo... a lecture, by the way, that will have no impact on how anything is done, except maybe if you believe other smashers are intimidated by you and won't say they're not going even when they're not. And it's funny because I understand where you're coming from, back when I would get mad at the community for doing the same thing. But you know what? Who cares? The people who have made smash a priority will show up, and those who did not won't. Nothing deviates from that fact.

ITs like if you cant say anything nice, dont say anything at all.

Overall its just better for the community/the individual tourney when ppl dont discourage people from going.

Saying something like, "Id like to go, but unfortunately I have to work and boss wont let me out of it", etc etc.

That at least supports the idea that the tourney would be tight, and still letting ppl know that you cant make it.

I just think it does more harm to say Im not coming despite being able too. Not coming because you CANT says you at least want to be there, not coming because you choose not to go, or dont want to make the effort hurts attendance/interest.

Edit: like most things, its situational.

Reasons why Melee is on Sunday:

1 - Brawl is likely to be a larger crowd, as it is in *most* cases. It is also a slower game, so as a result it will require more time. Saturday is generally considered "more time".
So from a scheduling standpoint, you do your larger games on the day that has less restrictions.
Same for Halo vs MW2. We are likely to get 50% more Halo3 teams then MW2 teams, so Halo is Sat, MW2 is Sun.

2 - Someone asked about why not B/M on Sat and H/MW2 on Sunday. They are DIFFERENT platforms, that would require 2x the equipment at a minimum. Not likely we will get 40-60 TVs and Wiis and not at all possible to get 50+ TV and 360s.
So from an equipment standpoint, simply not possible.
ALSO see #1 above. Scheduling and the use of time is important.
Halo3 with 25+ teams running 4 games at a time until last 2 rounds when you have to go Full Screen, is a 10ish hr event. Sunday will not work for that, in addition to doing MW2 same day.

3 - Availability of Space
Simply not the sq ft available to do all of this in one day even if somehow we got enough equipment.

4 - As Hugo said, Melee players are Diva's and do not want to be around that other game, as if its some ex-gf or something.
So from an Event Management standpoint, is A LOT SMARTER to do them on different days.

Now, since my events run about 3hrs faster then virtually anyone else with like numbers, I would be willing to start Melee on Saturday and possible try to get 2v2's done so all we have is 1v1 on Sunday (which will likely go straight to bracket anyway unless we get 100++ people for Melee 1v1).

BUT BUT BUT BUT to do this, we need 20+ Brawl stations set up for Brawl on Saturday and 10++ Melee stations on Saturday. That means 30 set ups. Not one less.
On Sunday we will need 15 Melee stations minimum and we can knock this thing out FAST.

OH and we also have TvC and SF4 to consider, as they take set ups and time (which is why SF4 is Sunday, as I will need less 360s on Sunday then Sat)

As for TvC, the TvC ppl are bringing their own set ups for it.

At a minimum there is always 4-8 stations for the off game at TP events.
So worst case, you friendly Melee all day Sat and then tournament on Sun.

IF (again see above for this IF) we can start Melee on Sat I am good with that but with the space available, the fact I do not have a count on set ups yet, and just hours we can run this, its hard to know for sure how much we can get done on Sat.

Brawl has to finish on Sat in order to have the set ups available for Melee on Sun.
That means on Sat, Brawl has priority in all ways, just like on Sunday, Melee has priority in all ways over Brawl.
