Stop it! Too many tourneys trying to be nationals just means that we all suffer in the end.

MLG Orlando
MLG Columbus
MLG Raleigh
MLG Dallas
MLG Finals
Apex
Airship
GAMME

What is that, 8 months for all 8 of those events? Please...it won't happen.

I know MLG kinda screwed things up with their sudden announcements. But things like Apex and Airship being 2 weeks apart? That just should never happen. Oversaturation will lead to lower attendance and nobody will be happy. Genesis and Pound 4 succeeded because they were announced waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of time and there were no other big tourneys for people to go to. That's the way it should be...

Now we have MLG running events, which is 5 nationals in the span of a few months. But not only do we have MLG, we have 3 grassroots tournaments trying to achieve the same level of success that #4 and Genesis got when they had no competition at all! It just won't work...it's nice that Smash is starting to get big, but we don't have a large enough playerbase to get enough entrants that can go to all of these tournaments. For people that aren't making mad stacks like Ally and M2K, they can maybe afford to go an MLG that happens to be close to them, and maybe choose between one of Apex/Airship/GAMME...and that's it. You won't be seeing 300 entrants for any of those tournaments. Which is a shame :/ But people are becoming TOO ambitious and nobody will be happy in the end.

MLG knows that even if they announce a tourney like 2 months before it's gonna happen, they're likely gonna max out on attendance.

it's frikkin MLG. they dont need to hype for a year like pound4 and apex do.

however, look at it this way, there's a cap of 128 at MLG orlando, so it's likely people are still gonna be at home playing smash, just that the truly top players are gonna be on the west coast, and the ones who decided not to go can make some money somewhat easier without so many bigshots around.

as far as i'm concerned this is a good thing, most people who planned to go to apex or any other national are likely gonna go regardless unless they're too beat from MLG tournies, and honestly, it's gonna calm down rather quickly again in a year.

What can you do though? make MLG change their schedule? oh wait, they kinda have a strict schedule due to already having to run halo, SF, and other tournaments, we cant do jack about it, so why worry?

edit: as for gamme? yeah that frikkin sucks. but honestly unless the attendee was sponsored, i'm pretty sure they are gonna go to gamme regardless, because if they follow the same system that pound 4 did (pre-reg ****it, if you have a really big tourney forcing pre-reg payment is probably the best way to ensure success.) unless the person is MLG sponsored they arent required to dole out an extra 35 bucks to go to MLG and waste their pre-reg for gamme.

It'll hurt attendance for gamme, that's certain, but not much can be done about it.

Apex will be the only grassroots brawl tournament that will live up to the expectations(yes i know melee will be there as well, but i have 0 idea about the attendance for that)

and Cat5 should do reasonably well, and VERY well in the melee area IMO

of course this is just sort of speculation but i think gaame and airship are doomed.

mlgs fine tho they'll get plenty of people lol

CoT5 is also lurking around

Everything is all confirmed it's just that I can't decide on a date because there's too many freicken tourneys. I originally planned for it to be in Sept but I can't shimmy it in there.

I wanna go to Apex, Airship, and Gamme. For melee. :3 Apex is closest to me, airship and gamme are kinda far lol. But if there is a will there will be a way.

Also, only thing we can do, or people that host tournies can do, is plan earlier NOW for next time. So start planning those dates, now for a big tourny 6 months later.

Do you tourny hosts like, have group meetings, because if you don't, you should. Seriously, that way you guys can work out scheduling for tournies, because its all for the community, right? ;]

The whole MLG conflicting with other tourney's is sad but not really the TOs fault. Like I said in the other thread the goal of the TO is to make any event as big as feasibly possible with the available resources. The ultimate goal and test of a TO is to run a national.

Anyway, you act like it is a bad thing. It is bad for TOs who have sort of a monopoly on what event you go to, but competition is good for the consumer (or in this case tourney goer). You know have more options. Entry may be heart a bit by the closeness but I am sure each event will still be successful.

I think that the tournies with the most hype will do fine while the ones which shouldn't have been nationals anyway will suffer the most. I don't really think more nationals hurt.

You are right. I guess we keep forgetting that we are in a capitalistic country, but without competion, competitors wouldn't need to change or even do well. We'd probaly have 1 big tourny in california or something (most likely or maybe in Florida or Md) and we'd be stuck with going [or not going] to that one tourny. Luckily I have one close to me, which is Apex. : D

We would want a socialist country, but then everyone would have fair wages, same education, same health care, and plus have the government invading in our lives and telling us what to do. Oops sorry to go off topic. :3

So first we would have to choose what we want Capitalist (choices x competion) or Socialist ( Equal and same [meaning no one has to put effort to become successfull x government spies)

I choose capitalist. But then I'd probaly forget again and whine about too many nationals. xD

Cataclysm 5, Whobo, Showdown, should also be added to OP. I believe Genesis 2 was canceled.
I dnt think Genesis would be canceled...it would just be a MELEE ORIENTED TOURNAMENT. Those other tourneys sound like Brawl tournaments anyway.

If all these events were melee, it wouldn't work, but there are so many brawlers that this works out in their favor because they have so many oppurtunities

Why do you think you have to go to every one stingers? Just pick one

I think that we should try to be doing more small/big regional's, because people will want to be preparing themselves for the bigger nationals. Tourneyplay is one example of a regional (Its close to being a national event, and it will be one day)

lets hold state specific regionals leading up to big tournaments so wallets wont be empty by the time the big tourny's come up.

My wallet would be empty, but lets hold a tournament just in case.

Just kidding. Someone hold a regional here in pa. : D I'd go to it, maybe. I'll hope its not in the upper left corner of pa, since I'm on the bottom right. Yeah I'm quite negative. >_>
