Ok so here goes. Made a top ten, and it's not short

  1. Katana ZERO - a very solid indie side scroller hack n slash with a very depressing story about substance abuse. I beat it in less than a day and yet it left me staring at the wall for the rest of the day.
  2. The Messenger - another retro indie sidescroller, this time of the action platform variety. For the first half it kinda feels very standard but then when the game reaches its midpoint it reveals its key mechanic and becomes a Metroidvania, and it's pretty fun. Does feel a bit padded though.
  3. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze - I forgot I played it this year, I don't know how. This game rules, I've been holding off on it for years and it absolutely lived up to the insane praise it got back in the day
  4. Persona 3 Reload - The only repeat franchise entry on this list. This might be the greatest video game story I have ever experienced, it is genuinely a work of art and the Persona gameplay loop consumes me like very little else, it is dangerously addicting
  5. Bayonetta - Back in my incel days I dismissed Bayonetta as fanservice bait with no value. I was a fool, this game slaps, I suck at it but I don't care because it's so ****ing cool and fun and stylish, and Bayonetta has one of the most insane character introductions I've ever seen in a video game, it made my jaw drop. What a cool character. I really need to get to Bayonetta 2 this year, I have no reason to put it off
  6. Pikmin 4 - Wasn't sure whether or not to put this game or the first one, and I technically even played some of 3 this year which is my favorite of the franchise, but honestly it just kinda feels disingenuous to put a game I only partially played and a game I only played for a day over this complete package of a game, it's not flawless but it has a little something for every Pikmin enjoyer to appreciate. I hope Nintendo keeps supporting this franchise into the next generation.
  7. Metroid Prime - I can absolutely see why this is a classic. First time I ever enjoyed a first person game, great atmosphere and a spectacular translation of Metroid into 3D
  8. Celeste - This is the only game on the list that I played twice this year. I did say I wanted to focus on the P3R DLC but I just keep coming back to it because this game is just brilliant. Some of the most difficult platforming I have ever experienced and yet it feels... oddly comoforting to play? Like for some reason it is the perfect antidote for me when I feel dysphoric, I know Celeste is "the trans woman game" but I don't think that necessarily relates to its gameplay. I'm probably gonna play it more throughout the year as I am not done with it. This is now one of my favorite games of all time, and the same goes for the top 2.
  9. Persona 4 Golden - another game I've been putting off for years and it ended up being so good I literally could not play a different type of game for three months. I am not joking. This franchise gave me a new perspective on art and life and this game was the catalyst to that. It is very likely a huge factor that helped me to come to terms with my identity. I absolutely adore the setting, the story, and THE CHARACTERS oh man THE CHARACTERS felt real to me, I still miss them and I never technically even met them. P5 and P3 may technically be better games but nothing is going to beat this game for me, even if it is the only game with a party member that I actively dislike.
  10. Sonic x Shadow Generations - Sonic Generations was my first real Sonic game. I had a ****ty PC that could barely run it and I was very bad, but I didn't care, it was so fun. Over the years I kind of left the Sonic franchise behind me as something I felt almost ashamed to like, despite having fun with the games once in a while. This started to reverse at the start of this decade thanks to the movies, and now I can fully say it with confidence: I love this franchise again. Sonic was one of my first big autistic hyperfixations and it now occupies this same exact spot after all those years, and it is very much thanks to this game. A repackage of my first and favorite Sonic game with a brand new campaign focused on one of the coolest characters in fiction, in a game that has basically no bad elements in my eyes. It made me tear up multiple times during cutscenes, the OST was goated, and the levels kicked ass. Sonic Team, more of this PLEASE.

And that's that. There's admittedly a lot of genre overlap here and I do want to add more variety to the games I play this year, but given that I'm kicking it off with more Celeste and Persona and then a whole ass Sonic marathon, probably not likely

Oh dear. I just realized that if Roserade did get its Poison type swapped out for my Love type...sure it would earn two immunities to Steel and Dark, BUT it'd also gain two quad weaknesses to Poison and Bug.

Double-edged rose thorns, as it were.

Thought MooMew came back for a second.
His legacy lives on via the OneShot propaganda.

He'll never be forgotten 🫡

hope he's ok wherever he is
First new avatar of the year.

OneShot is a stellar game so far.
It's a phenominal game, got me out of an extremely dark time in my life.

I don't think I can ever play it again because of the memories attatched to it.

I just realized that this is set up from least to best but the numbers don't reflect that. Well at the very least I hope the descriptions get my ranking across better than the numbering

Spent the week writing a full Smash Bros moveset for Philomena Cunk instead of working on my school assignments so I‘m gonna have to pump up the jam this weekend
I get it, I sometimes spend weeks staring at my figure collection instead of making games and now I have to spend the weekend scrambling to get a project done.

Also not surprised that you like Philomena Cunk, good taste

Oh yeah, I forgot MooMew used Niko avatars a few times.

Wherever he's at now, I hope he's doing well.

I've heard almost nothing but praise about OneShot, so I figured it's time I finally give it a shot. Pun not intended.

I'm glad to hear it helped get you through difficult times in your life as well. A lot of people have at least one video game they've played that has done that for them. Sometimes, even something like a game, book or a show is what helps people get through some of the worst hurdles in life.

I was talking in the way Delphox and Primarina are femme coded. Or Gardeoir. Or Hatterene.
Aight, I'm picking up what you're putting down.

I mean I shouldn't talk. The grass starter I created for Purore is essentially a college fratboy with furbait qualities. But a femme-coded grass starter with a lot of flowers is definitely on my wishlist.

Speaking of flowers, I will forever be disappointed that Alola didn't feature a grass type featuring plumeria flowers - the main flower you see in Hawaiian leis! But then again Alola also gave me my all-time favorite Pokemon (who's also quite femme-coded) so who am I to complain?

According to the Internet it’s Meowscarada. It comes off as more gender neutral to me, but y’know…

Internet :drshrug:
I had a similar thought, actually. Like, it DOES have femme traits, but also more masc traits. They're kinda like NiGHTS as a Pokemon.

In hindsight Delphox probably should've appealed to me more as it is a femme coded starter based on a witch and I literally have "Hex" in my name for a reason.

Alas, they had to pop off so hard when making Greninja and accidentally created my undefeated favorite Pokémon smh
Delphox would’ve been cooler if it’s model didn’t make it look like a traffic cone

Now that I think about it I don't really gravitate towards femme coded Pokémon. Like, there are some that I do like, namely Roserade, Gardevoir, Hatterene, etc. but most of my favorite Pokémon are often either gender neutral or fairly masc coded. But then who says a woman can't have the aesthetic sensibilities of a 10 year old boy?

this was actually like a major hangup in me accepting that I'm trans, not even joking
