All right, here's the Round 16 judging. Neon Ness has had a busy week and hasn't been able to do judging this week, and F8AL hasn't gotten me his scores so I assume the same is true for him. As such, I'll be doing the sole judging this round. I considered postponing the judging, but I figure it's better to stay on schedule and just post the judging alone. Apologies for the late judging on my part, too; it's been a very busy week for me as well, since it's been my first full week of college.

Also, I would very much like to emphasize that everyone did an excellent job with the prompt this week. I know it wasn't an easy prompt, but everyone produced an excellent sprite.

But I digress. Without further ado, here are my scores for Round 16:

----------

CrimsonFeint – Heavy (Ursaring)

The amount of work you put into this sprite is truly impressive; the Heavy’s weaponry and clothing are both very well scratched onto Ursaring, and you chose a good Pokémon to match with the Heavy’s physical appearance. There is somewhat of a lack of shading on the minigun, and shading would make it look a bit more natural. Also, I do feel you should have incorporated the Heavy into Ursaring more, rather than transforming Ursaring; it’s difficult to tell what Pokémon exactly was used. Had you at least maintained Ursaring’s color, I think it would’ve felt a little better. Still, impressive scratch spriting on this; well done.

8.5/10

vVv ChiboSempai – Spy (Exeggutor)

I really like what you did with this sprite. You did a good job transforming Exeggutor into the Spy in reskinning its body to have a suit and a mask, especially considering that the base is a Pokémon which one wouldn’t think to associate with the spy. I also love that you added the touch of the potted plant look. It’s a creative way to take a natural part of Exeggutor and really blend it into the idea behind the Spy. Great job.

9/10

Tacel – Spy (Cubone)

A very well-crafted sprite. The suit and mask are well-constructed for the most part, although the tie looks a little awkward at the top. I also love the addition of the cigarette and gun to complete the Spy outfit. You can also still clearly tell that the sprite is Cubone while still being able to see the Spy in it as well. Great job.

9/10

Charmander – Pyro (Grumpig)

Great job on this sprite. I would have kept the ears the way you had them initially, honestly, because I think it helps to maintain the Grumpig feel better – as it is in the final state, it’s a little more difficult to discern the base – but this is sprite is really well done. I love that you didn’t go the obvious Magmortar route but still did a great job creating a Pokémon version of the Pyro. As I said, if you had kept the ears I think it would’ve done a better job of maintaining the look of being a Pokémon, but other than that, wonderful job.

9.5/10

----------

Congratulations to Charmander for being the winner of Round 16!

Next week's prompt (as per advice I received, I'm going to try and cut down on the "creative" prompts so as to make it less of a project to participate in the contest):

Re-type any Pokémon to Bug type.

The deadline is Friday, September 9th at 11:59 PM EST.

Nobody has even said anything about entering except charmander... and I just noticed.
No matter, Charmander is fierce. I just wish more of you would enter so that if I actually do win, I'll know its because I worked hard and not because nobody else entered.

I would enter but the prompt is too hard. If it was ice type or rock or an easy one I would do it.

For the prompt of retyping Charizard, my first attempt was to bug before going for Dark. It was absolute hell lol.

I'm not sure if I'm going to enter, retyping to bug is the worrrrst.

Go back to creative prompts, so much more fun imo

Porygon-AB, the DNA leeching Pokémon. This Pokémon latches onto its prey with its sharp beak and downloads their DNA. It stores this DNA within its abdomen for future use. It then uses it to lay eggs containing clones of their victim. Porygon-AB resembles a mosquito.

I honestly really hate this sprite. The concept was pretty cool, but I executed it very very poorly.

You should make it a more solid color scheme. Make the tail the light blue color and make the wings a bit more detailed while recoloring with either the lightest shade of the blue or the pink.

Made myself a Bs sprite cause I couldnt think of anything >>

Silkllusion (Bug typed Zoroark)
Bug/Dark
A pokemon found in thick forests, its shell expells silk that can bend light rays to make it appear as anything.

Not a final sub.
EDIT: I horribly dislike how the colors clash with the site's colors in this forum skin Dx

Yeah. I mean, the fact that you figured out a common species of bug that they hadn't made into a pokemon is really smart, and you picked the perfect pokemon for it.

Masquerain isn't based on a mosquito. It looks nothing like one and the only thing that'd make that a possibility is the name. Besides, its prevo is a water spider. Why would it become a mosquito? Because larvae grow in water? NAAH

Well now I feel stupid o3o
when I first saw masquerain, I saw it as a mosquito, and the antenna I thought of as the long mouth a mosquito...
in that case, even MORE props to you :b

Okay. I'm going to apologize right off the bat for forgetting about this until now, but it's been a very, very busy week. I had a big paper due yesterday, and I have another one due tomorrow in addition to a test and as it is I'm losing sleep to have everything done for my classes tomorrow.

Neon Ness and F8AL both sent me their scores, so rather than hold this up so that I can do my scores up tomorrow, I'm going to post up the results as they come from Neon Ness and F8AL's judging.

-----------

Wretched - Masectops

F8AL: First of all, good job on your sprite. From a first glance, it certainly looks like a bug pokemon. I like it how every part of your sprite looks like they belong together and all the colors match. Overall, a good attempt.

Neon Ness: Kind of have mixed feelings about this one. There are definitely parts I like, the coloring and striping immediately give a Bug feel. The transition from the head to the body is very nice. But then other parts seem a bit too far off from the prompt. Like, bugs don't really have fists so I wish those had been altered to legs or pincers or something. They really stand out and throw me off from the idea as a whole. The biggest thing is it looks like the bug parts were simply taken from other Pokemon (Venomoth's head/wings, Drapion's legs/striping) while the prompt was to retype a single Pokemon to Bug, not make a fusion. Unfortunately I feel like your process strayed from the intended purpose of a retype prompt.

F8AL: 9/10
Neon Ness: 3/10
FINAL: 6/10

Kantrip – Porygon-AB

F8AL: The only complaint I have for your sprite is that in my opinion, the colors don't go well with each other and you could have made it look more like a bug pokemon by adding more details and choosing a different pokemon to use. Overall, a decent sprite.

Neon Ness: Great concept, I like to see how you've used parts of Porygon in an unusual but effective manner. The compound eyes and wings are a great touch, and of course the beak area was nicely redone for a bug look. I only wish you had changed the colors a bit, something in the tan/brown range would push the mosquito look further. The tail seems unresolved somehow, a bright blue bulb doesn't seem to fit with the bug motif here. The wings are slightly tacked on, I think it's because of the outline overlap but mostly this is a well made entry, very nice.

F8AL: 8/10
Neon Ness: 8/10
FINAL: 8/10

Charmander - Silkllusion

F8AL: I like the selection of colors you picked for this sprite but unfortunately, it really doesn't look like any parts resemble a bug pokemon. The amount of detail is impressive.

Neon Ness: This is such a good start I wish you had seen it through more fully. I like the idea of it using silk to form illusions of itself, but somehow the white on its head area doesn't quite look like silk--silk is a fairly shiny material so making parts of it gleam could get that across. Maybe it would've helped to see some loose strands of silk hanging off here and there. In a technical sense I have no real complaints about the sprite, great colors for a Bug retype. But the claws look like different shapes and I'm wondering why, plus certain parts look more Steel than Bug. I guess on the whole it still looks a bit too much like a mammal than a bug in terms of anatomy.

F8AL: 7/10
Neon Ness: 6/10
FINAL: 6.5/10

-----------

Congratulations to Kantrip for being the winner of Round 17!

Round 18's prompt, a clever (yet simple) concept courtesy of Neon Ness:

Create a new flavor of Vanilluxe.

The deadline is Friday, September 23rd at 11:59 PM EST.
Apologies for having a somewhat difficult prompt last week, I was trying to go simple and I suppose I forgot that Bug isn't too easy to retype to. And again, apologies for only being able to hurriedly post the results up like this.

This is silly. A 3 for it having arms? Do you really think that the effort for that sprite was worth a three?
That's kinda silly.
From now on I'm not going to take any risks, because that seems to be what wins.

If you read Neon Ness's judging, you can see that it was not given a three just for it having arms.

This contest is for fun, please don't take it too seriously if you don't win.

Sorry if it sounded harsh, but like I said the biggest part wasn't the arms, it was taking so much of the sprite from other already existing Pokemon besides Machamp. That's good for a fusion, but for a retype of a single Pokemon prompt, I was hoping more for original bug parts spliced onto Machamp. I hope you don't really feel like you need to stop taking risks altogether, often times it's a good habit to have in my opinion.

I'm not taking it seriously but a retyping can be doesn't have to be scratched. I just... a three? For it being a fusion? It looks like a bug typed machamp. The fact that I used others parts shouldn't be a part of what makes it a good sprite or not, and the prompt should definitely play less of a part in the future.
