jolly old england. hohoho.
Helped a friend with a project today. Had to go running for 45 minutes on a treadmill. What he didn't tell me was that it was interval running and I had to do it shirtless and he would take pictures with an infra-red camera. Kinda weird.

I surprised myself and survived the whole 45 minutes! There's a gym nearby and I think I'm going to start running on a regular basis :)

I just had a soda. I feel fat now.

How often can I get away with eating boiled eggs? That includes the yolk. I've eaten 5 in the past 3 days.

My triceps are developing disproportionately and I have no idea why. :/

I also think I may have pulled something in my leg. I can't tell because it only hurts when I perform very specific actions.

Wow, I've never heard of cooking eggs denaturing the protein, do you have any sources for this?

Hard boiled eggs are solid the protein is denatured. In general, proteins are denatured if the temperature of the environment they are in is increased past their tolerance level.

The increase in temperature breaks the molecular bonds that form these proteins and change their structure, therefore changing their function.

Source: biology, chemistry, physics.

Sleep is so good for you.

On sunday night I got around 4 hours of sleep and couldn't finish my last two squat sets on monday but last night I got around 7 hours and was able to crank out 5x5 on the same weight.

Feels good.

So I had my 2 hour long fitness assessment today. Tests ranged from flexibility of the back, lateral movement, hamstrings, core endurance, vertical jump, aerobic endurance, max bench, max leg press among other things.

I knew my hamstring flexibility was bad, but I didn't know it was THAT bad. According to the results, I was in the 5th percentile, marking me as "Needs work". Definitely going to be doing some more stretches, and I plan to take up Yoga over the summer.

At the same time, my back flexibility was "Excessive". I was labeled under the 99th percentile rofl.

Lateral flexibility also "Needs work".

But yeah, pretty fun test!

FML, Deadlifts are killing me. Went 165,205,245, and tried for 285lbs for 5 reps. My grip starts giving out, and after my 4th rep, I realized I tore some of the callouses on my left hand, so I probably can't DL for a week or two. I really need to work on this grip thing.

if youre tearing callouses you are probably gripping way too far into your palm. gloves are worse for grip - try chalk

I think I tried gripping higher up on my palm for my fourth set, since the bar was slipping, and that's what I get. :<.

they are high in cholesterol, btw.

and my boiling them, you denature most of the protein, making it useless, btw.
Whoa whoa, this is definitely not true.

Any form of cooking denatures the proteins, but that does not make them useless. In many cases, denaturing the proteins makes them easier to digest. Denaturation is nothing more than a change in the conformation of the protein, and unless you overcook it (burning or charring, for example) it will still be readily available for the body to digest.

In fact, protein in a cooked egg is much easier for the body to digest and incorporate than protein in a raw egg.

Roughly 90% of protein in a cooked egg is taken up by the body, vs 50% of protein from a raw egg. Cooking is not a bad thing. It often (but not always) allows for easier digestion of nutrients by the body.

Regarding the eggs, here's a pretty well-known study entitled "Digestibility of Cooked and Raw Egg Protein in Humans as Assessed by Stable Isotope Techniques":
http://jn.nutrition.org/content/128/10/1716.long

In other words, cook your eggs. Downing a bunch of raw eggs based on the misconception that they're more nutritious is very "Hollywood" and very outdated.

that study was actually pretty interesting.

limited by how few applicants there were, and by how old it is, but interesting.

i'll find some literature on the subject when i have the time.

Yeah, look into it. The discovery of fire by early humans, and their use of it to cook food, is one of the reasons modern humans advanced as far as they have. From a Nat Geo article (among other sources):

"Cooking makes starchy things gelatinous, breaks up proteins, and softens rock-hard edibles, Wrangham said. Such textural and chemical changes make foods easier to eat and digest."

"Also, our gut is not set up for processing raw items as effectively as cooked food."

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/02/090213-human-diet-cooking.html

From Wikipedia:
"The cooking of meat, as evident from burned and blackened mammal bones, makes the meats easier to eat and easier to attain the nutrition from proteins by making the meat itself easier to digest.[26][27] The amount of energy needed to digest cooked meat is less than raw meat, and cooking gelatinizes collagen and other connective tissues as well, "opens up tightly woven carbohydrate molecules for easier absorption."[27] "
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Control_of_fire_by_early_humans

another edit: Also just found this study:
"Amounts of 5.73% and 35.10% (P < 0.005) of cooked and raw test meal, respectively, escaped digestion and absorption in the small intestine. A significantly higher percentage of the malabsorbed raw egg protein was recovered in urine as fermentation metabolites. These results 1) confirm that substantial amounts of even easily digestible proteins may escape assimilation in healthy volunteers and 2) further support the hypothesis that the metabolic fate of protein in the colon is affected by the amount of protein made available."

I don't mean to turn this thread into something too "science-y", but felt this was a good point to bring up.

Where do you get this assessment done?

Also, does anyone know how to use calipers to determine body fat? I have calipers, but I don't know how to use them to read body fat...
At my college (UT), I volunteered for a fitness study. Twice in the semester I went through some tests along with getting my BF measured in a bod pod.

you need to be trained to accurately measure bodyfat with calipers. also you cant take them yourself. http://www.muscleandstrength.com/tools/how-to-measure-bodyfat-using-calipers.html
Ah damn. I don't even have the right calipers XD I won some ECG calipers in a raffle and they are apparently WAY different from skin calipers haha. Also, I love how the drawing of the women is unnecessarily naked in the diagrams haha.

I've never heard of a bod pod. I'll google it, but my first impression is that you're clamped in some tight mold like thing.

EDIT: Does that thing calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate too?! I was looking at a sample results chart and that **** had freakin everything!
