Armamentalist is the class you're looking for then. It's one of the advanced classes, but the quest to unlock it (and the Gladiator) are availible as soon as you can change classes. In the abby, talk to the Musketeer-looking fellow for the Armamentalist quest. The mission afterwards given from the same guy gets you the class' unique clothing, which are some of the coolest in the game.

Well if by "jack of all trades" you mean decent melee and spellcaster/support, then your options are
Minstrel - mediocre stats all around but can do everything
Thief - good agility, decent attack, mediocre healing, no offensive magic
Armamentalist - decent attack, best support spells, no healing, no offensive magic
Paladin - decent attack, good support and healing, extremely tough, no offensive magic
Ranger - like a better thief, except a bit weaker attack and agility iirc
Luminary - **** stats and difficult to unlock

Honestly the best way to be a jack of all trades is to level up and put skill points into every available class. Every class has something worth getting (well, except mage) and every class can use every skill you've unlocked.

so wait. if i unlock a skill only seen as a thief, and then i go to soilder, i have those skills avaliable?

****.

also, Gonna go paladin. i dont need offensive magic since I have mage on the team. :V

Minstrel's meh is my main issue with him lol.

maybe after (if i can) max out all other skills, it'd be worth it.

can you max out all skills? or do you reach level cap before that happens?

Level cap is 99 and iirc you get about 200 skill points total from that, but you can revocate which starts you back at level 1 with all skills intact so you can level up again and get even more skill points (not to mention you can get skill points from every class, so that's ~1400 skill points without even needing to revocate). Revocation has some other benefits though. For example, the only way to get the best accessory in the game is by revocating a level 99 martial artist.

And no, minstrel is never worth it. His stats are too ****ty.

Yes, there really is that much content in DQ9. I'm 300 hours in and there's still a ton left to do.

Yes, I have dragon quest 9. I used to have two copies but my DS went missing with one of the copies. I haven't played since really. My fiancee also has a copy and she is at Upover now.

I am not a big fan of skill barriers. In order to compete in Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon you had to have max level characters as well as having done some RNG abuse. However there is a difference between RPG barriers and fighting game skill barriers. L canceling is what I would consider a tech barrier for Melee. Being able to consistently perform it brough a sense of accomplishment to players. It could also be argued that is added depth to the game. I saw some good arguments as to why auto cancelling aerials and L cancelling is the same, but I am not sure where to stand. A lot of players really like the techy stuff.

Do your fiancee or any of your buddies have the Locker map? None of us do but I'd love to get my hands on it.

@Neko: This is easily the most time I've ever spent on an RPG (a single playthrough at least). And I barely even remember the main story.

ZOMG 2 characters in our postbit yay!

wrong wrong wrong, shadow dragon was easy. i beat it many times without max levels or rng abuse, only time that was necessary was hardest difficulty. solid strategy is all you need.

on the subject of ar codes and hacking abuse and whatnot...

ar hacking - useless for 90% of the populous. they check for these things at official tourneys, and with pokemon online, whats the point. why have hard copies of these pokes if you will never use them for anything? if you play online against random people well sure maybe, but seems pointless to me.

in game exploitations - the iv glitch one is annoying as hell yes, ive done it once and doubt ill ever do it again, also doubt ill ever raise another poke because i dont plan to go to any tourneys. raised 8 pokes in plat the hard way, grinding them all to 100, never again. raised 10 more with ar rare candy code.

official tournaments are 2 vs 2 where perfect pokemon aren't necessary. in 1 vs 1 play you need perfect or at least flawless (pokemon with an IV of "x") to be competitive against the better players. however, nintendo doesn't do those anymore! there is absolutely no reason not to hack unless you're doing a nintendo sanctioned event. even if you are, it'd make your life easier to go on smogon and simply buy replicated ones for $5 a pop and save yourself a LOT of time.

if I could hack my pokemon, I would all day. the IV system being completely random and barely exploitable is a huge time/effort barrier to competitive play. competition shouldn't require 300 hours of grinding for a good team like I did last time around.

edit:

http://s89.photobucket.com/albums/k206/UmbreonMow/

none of the pokemon or fire emblem stuff is hacked. for the curious, the mario picture of me flying underground isn't hacked either.

So who's coming over this weekend? Definitely wanna do some smash and DQ9. I'm free all weekend and I believe Bandit is too (though it's hard to get a straight answer out of him).

I'm not coming because I have johns.

Pokemon johns.

nah I'll be there on Sat. Going to see if QD wants to chill tonight though. I need landing detection though and I've purposefully haven't played P:M since LD was discovered. I'm going to be all kinds of awful.

Let's see how good you are without your precious techskill :troll:

I wanna run some grottos toooo. I revocated my Pally again (and I'm gonna see if I can do it one more time tonight) so I should be getting some crazy high quality ones.

i think taking a joke thats main purpose is sexual innuendo and adding "thats what she said" to it makes it a double negative or something, anyway the world just exploded.

Suggestion Kaiser.

Use Thunder Wave on Thundrus. I have been completely unable to stop sweeps from Pokemon that boost their speed like Metagross and Gyarados and most likely Volcarona as well. Thunder Wave would be the perfect solution to those kinds of situations, add team synergy by directly benefiting your slow *** team, and would take advantage of Prankster much better. Almost never have I found myself in a situation needing a priority Nasty Plot. I would either get the Nasty Plot off anyway by forcing a switch, or I would need to do as much damage as possible because if I don't then I'd die for nothing before I get a hit off with Nasty Plot'd stuff.

Still playtesting the team though. That is a definite issue though. Testing Thunder Wave > Nasty Plot right now.

EDIT: Also your team is hard countered by Starmie. Plz fix

EDIT #2: Hey I remember I had a log saved. It's not a GOOD log, but it's the only one I remembered to save just to see what would happen.

UStupidNggr was really being a stupid *#&$@ this match. The ONE match where he's ALMOST useful...and he misses Gear Grind. Goddamnit (Guy). And Oh Jaezus really lives up to its name. Not only in this match but in most every other match.
