Nothing's deconfirming him. Until we get the death knell it's never over. And even then? There's always post-pass.

There's a difference between a fake leak and straight up deconfirmation.

Anyone else remembers that fake Palutena screenshot from the SSB4 days? That was a fake leak yet we still got her.

We are basically in the same spot where we were before those french twitter screenshots.
With Dante and Resident Evil deconfirmed and Monster Hunter content already in the game, Nick is the Capcom rep that is left standing. That hasn't changed (Yet.... hopefully)

I don’t really believe any of the leaks, but god, I don’t know if my heart can handle Wright be the talk of the town on the leak scene. As of late, any character proposed to be next is shot down, like, two days later at most. Still, who knows what could happen or who could be next...

I wake up every day now in fear that Phoenix will be the next target of the Sabi/Verge deconfirmation train.

The fact that he hasn't been deconfirmed and people think he is will make for a more surprising reveal at the game awards.

If Phoenix is CP5 after all of this, I'd love to see everyone posting stuff like "you can't kill Phoenix" or "Phoenix always comes back from the ashes" as well as the usual "The only time a lawyer can cry is when it's over... it's finally over". That's the image in my head rn.

Just keep in mind, even if Phoenix isn't FP5 (despite nothing indicating the case), he can still show up later, especially if AA7 is up Capcom's sleeve.
Imagine if not only Phoenix Wright gets revealed at the Game Awards, but his reveal is also accompanied by the reveal of the next Ace Attorney game.

I personally can not wait for him to be announced for Smash, Phoenix would be insanely fun to play and it would help the series to sell way more, like it did to Dragon Quest. Because as a Spanish speaker, they stopped translating the games to Spanish after Apollo Justice (And they don't even bother to reuse old translations for rereleases).
I really would like if they sold more so we don't have to beg Capcom to bring AAI2 and the DGS games to the west. And my sister doesn't have to wait for Spanish fan translations to play any post-AA4 game.

Also, I'm impatient and I want to play as him as soon as possible, so there is that.

The worst part is that if he does get revealed, we'll have to wait a long time to even know his moveset. Just like with Joker.

Not too long, I'd imagine. The Fighter's Pass is meant to be done by February 2020. If Phoenix is revealed next month at the game awards, that only leaves 2 months of waiting.

Honestly, I wont even mind that at all. I can wait for my no. 1 requested character his moveset and reveal date after he actually gets announced..

not neccesarily, we could still get a decent preview if his reveal trailer is like Hero or Banjo, and I don't think the wait for his release should take that long if they still plan for a February release window (with how much faster the post Joker characters have been released, I wouldn't be surprised if fighter 5 comes out earlier than late february).
I gotta say, if Sabi or Verge do give Phoenix the disconfirm for fighter 5, I don't think I can expect someone that I'd like to close things up, at the very least not someone I know I want, there could always be a Cloud like in Sm4sh.

I wouldn't worry about not watching a moveset during the hypotetical announcement.
Sakurai's team is way ahead of schedule.
They finished Banjo before Fall and Terry's model and some moves were already completed when they filmed Banjo's showcase (Which was only 2 days after Hero).

I'm sure they have the Fighter #5 mostly completed, enough to have the full gameplay trailer and give a release date. Compared to Joker last year, when they had nothing. Which explains the LOOOOOOONG wait until his release.

I would even say they have the first Post-Pass DLC character fairly advanced now.

I hope we get an hour-long livestream of it soon after the game awards.

probably not, as all gameplay demonstrations where showcased the same day as the fighter released iirc, and I doubt we'll be that lucky to get fighter 5 as soon as the TGA ends.

Fine with me. At least there aren't too many potential movesets to think of for him, so it'll be hard for anyone to be proven wrong this time.

Given that, I still stand by my belief that we'll know FP5 and the first character to come after them revealed in the VGAs. It's a safe hill to die on. Bonus points if we get FP5 early into the ceremonies.

If Phoenix Wright gets revealed, either as Fighter 5 or post-Pass DLC, what Mii Fighter costumes do you think he would come with?

For returning costumes, he could easily come with X and Mega Man.EXE, as well the Monster Hunter costumes if a playable Hunter isn't being included as DLC. As for new costumes based on characters from the Ace Attorney series, Silver Samurai could be an obvious Mii Swordfighter costume, and Furio Tigre as a brawler.

... maybe Manfred von Karma could be a Mii Gunner costume, though explaining why would be getting into spoiler territory.

Here's how I would do a reveal at TGAs:

Geoff appears on the big screen and says "One year ago in this very room we announced the first DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Unfortunately, the fifth fighter is not ready yet, so we are unable to show him here today." Suddenly the screen goes black and a giant "objection!" appears, with Geoff now on the witness stand. The camera pans over to Phoenix and he says "Sorry, Geoff. I just got here.", while holding the back of his head. Then Geoff hands Phoenix the invitation. There are two invites, and Phoenix hands one to Edgeworth, who becomes an echo fighter.

This kind of subversion and sudden echo announcement would be wild for the Game Awards.
The only kind of reveal I could see for Phoenix is a subversion, not only because it opens the door for an "Objection!," but in 2005, Sakurai talked incredibly fondly of the TGS DS trailer.

I think it’s a guarantee that we’d get a Blue Badger hat, Godot visor, and a Steel Samurai costume, especially due to how large of a plot point it is. I don’t think we’d get any full-on major character outfits though, as none of them could really blend into Mii movesets easily.

I'd say we're likely to get RE costumes after the spiriting they got, any of the characters featured in the board seem like good candidates, maybe Claire too. I could see Viewtiful Joe being Mii costumed as well, I dunno about Arthur given his knight armor being a little more on the generic medieval armor side, but who knows. If they decide to give more love to SF, Chun-Li and Bison seem like the likeliest characters to follow suit after Guile.
As far as AA characters go, I do think Silver Samurai and Blue Badger would be pretty good references, maybe the Fey spirit channeling garment? and general representation of the franchise, after that I'd say the big prosecutors feel like the likeliest to get that love, Edgeworth, Franziska, Godot possibly through his visor alone, maybe Gumshoe?

Smash 4 had a generic medieval armor costume. They could probably recycle that, alter it a bit so it more closely resembles Arthur's armor, and also add in a hat that gives the Mii a helmet and a beard.

Steel Samurai's mask is a given, maybe the full costume for a swordfighter if they make the proportions work. I am looking forward to the inevitable remix of his theme tho.

Herr Forehead and Cykes-Dono as brawlers. The obligatory important characters that get turned into Mii costumes.

I can't imagine a Gunner except for maybe... Trucy??

I can't see a lot of potential Mii costumes tbh, maybe Steel Samurai, but my bet is on Capcom Mii costumes returning and a brand-new Joe costume.

Definitely Maya Fey's outfit, considering it's quite iconic to Ace Attorney.

I think the most important mii outfits would be Maya Fey, Edgeworth, Apollo and Athena.

If we have any more space after that (unlikely) then I'd go for the Steel Samurai and maybe Gumshoe.

Franziska would be cool but unfortunately it would be too jarring if she didn't have her Whip.

There’s also the possibility most, if not all the Mii costume slots go to other Capcom properties, like some of the ones from 4 that haven’t transferred over yet. If we only get ONE AA series costume, I feel a Maya/Fey Clan outfit (swordfighter with a Magatama staff? or a brawler) or an Edgeworth outfit (swordfighter with a sword based off the King of Prosecutors trophy?) is pretty much a lock, one or the other.

GameExplain's Jon Cartwright weighs his words in on AT, spirits and Mii costumes not mattering in the slightest.

While it's good for him to do this, one has to keep in mind that future inclusions have to be within the realm of reason (I mean, I have a hard time seeing Dr. Kawashima, the Yakuman player, and the chef from Personal Trainer: Cooking become playable).

As far as I see it, the only content that really affects anything is whatever comes after the base game.

I don't see why I should weight in another speculators take on what disconfirms or not a character, the only one that can sway my beliefs on that is Sakurai and his team adding a character that's already an AT/Boss/Mii Costume/Spirit. As things are now, we've only seen characters ascended from their AT/Mii Costume role when a new game comes out (Little Mac, Ridley, K.Rool, Chrom, Dark Samus, Isabelle, Daisy kinda?), and the only characters who jumped from being simple trophies to playable characters where returning veterans (Mewtwo, Lucas).
Could they break that pattern through DLC? Sure. Does that mean it'll happen? No.

At this point Wright is probably my most wanted right now for FP5. Resident Evil is out (for the entire DLC cycle, I believe :(), Dante isn't FP5. Crash, which is one of my another priorities is also deconfirmed for the next slot.
And as I said a lot of times I want more than 1 Capcom rep for Ultimate's DLC. I think only one would be a bit underwhelming, but I guess it's me. For that reason I want Wright to be the next one, first because I like him and I think he would be super cool as a character, and second because that way we would get at least one new character from Capcom, and with a bit of luck we could get another one post-pass.

About a possible Game Awards reveal... As some people say, Ace Attorney isn't specially mainstream. However, neither was Persona. But I think both franchises are relatively similar in some aspects. Both aren't obscure, they're relatively popular and they had a loyal fanbase. In fact, Ace Attorney has some elements in favor. I mean, I'm pretty sure MOST of the audience are familiar in some way with AA.
Wright's design is hard to forget, and you have the "Objection!" thing, which I have seen in the internet countless times before I started playing the franchise. It's like a meme.

Joker had the surprise factor and relevance, being the main character from one of the most acclaimed games of 2017 and being nominated in the Game Awards. All of this coincided with the rise in popularity Persona had. Phoenix Wright as a character is more veteran than Joker, and if his hypothetical reveal for the Game Awards plays around a bit with the characteristics elements of Ace Attorney I'm really sure most people would be aware of who he is.

In any case he would be pretty hype for the audience, I think. Even if some don't know him people will be excited (and confused) because a ****ing lawyer would be in Smash as a playable character.
