1. Unrepresented Genre
Getting more genres into Smash would give more credit to its "Video Game Hall of Fame" title. There's a lot of untapped potential here.
2. Fighting Games
This one's obvious (I'm biased). Now with Kazuya in and taking into account the Akira AT, I finally feel like the big faces of Fighting Games are somewhat properly repped and we can delve into more interesting territory now.
3. Indie
Give the little guys some love.

Greetings! Voting has been closed and here are the results!

Third Party Prompt Results

Well, goes without saying that our most popular prompt has been Add a fighter from a genre not currently represented in Infinite by Honest Slug Honest Slug ! Congratulations!! Definitely deserved as it's probably the prompt that would bear the most interesting additions in my opinion. Anyways, without further ado, we'll now be entering the discussion round for this prompt.

Discussion Round: Add a Fighter from a Genre not currently represented in Infinite
We are of the opinion that a Discussion Round could serve this prompt very well. As there are seems to be quite a lot of genres, and the possibilities are seemingly a bit... endless at first glance. A discussion round could prove to help us know which genres we're interested in representing, along with the possible characters. Please keep in mind that we're looking at primary genres represented by Series, not Characters. Or else this would be way more of a headache than it already is. For example; Dr. Mario would've disqualified all Puzzle characters and Waluigi all Party ones... Well, not like we're in dire need of a character for that latter one, I think. Anyways, we've also thought of providing not only a list of said genres that have already been represented in Infinite, but a list of genres that we could possibly rep with our following character. Here are the lists.
  • Platformer (Mario, DK, etc.)
  • Action-Adventure (Zelda)
  • Metroidvania (Metroid, Castlevania)
  • Spaceship Shooter/Railway Shooter (StarFox)
  • JRPG (Fire Emblem, Dragon Quest, etc.)
  • Racing (F-Zero)
  • High Score (G&W)
  • Stealth (Metal Gear)
  • Real Time Strategy (Pikmin)
  • Social Simulation (Animal Crossing)
  • Exergaming (Wii Fit)
  • Sports Game (Punch Out)
  • Maze Game (Pac-Man)
  • Light Gun Shooter (Duck Hunt)
  • Fighting Game (Street Fighter, ARMS, etc.)
  • Hack n Slash (Bayonetta)
  • Third Person Shooter (Splatoon)
  • Sandbox (Minecraft)
  • Fashion (Style Savvy)
  • Rhythm (Rhythm Heaven)
  • Survival (Resident Evil)
  • Horror (Resident Evil)
  • Puzzle
  • First-Person Shooter
  • Visual Novels
  • Beat 'em Up
  • Shoot 'em Ups/Bullet Hells/Run n' Gun
  • Board/Card Game
  • Space Sims
  • Pinball Game
  • Roguelikes/Roguelites
  • Open World RPG
  • Tower Defense
  • MOBA
  • Soulslikes
  • Party Game
  • 4X

Keep in mind the latter list is not a definitive list, moreso a list of examples of genres that have not made it into Smash Infinite yet. If you can still come up with a genre that has not yet made its footing into Smash and is not on the list, feel free to include it. We made these lists to encourage and help with discussion and just give a general idea to what needs to be done with the prompt.

Please keep in mind, Activision and Capcom characters are disqualified due to the inclusion of Crash and Jill & Leon. Don't forget that this will be a closing newcomer announcement for the Direct and a coveted 3rd party newcomer spot on the roster.

Now finally, what genres do you feel are the most "worthy" to make it into Smash in your opinion? What genre would be the most fun to translate into Smash's gamestyle? Which character would be used to represent said genre? DISCUSSION ROUND: START!

I guess to start I think the first one we should look at would be FPS. With how massive they are in the west it feels like there should actually be a couple of them here. Doom, Far Cry, Halo and Bioshock are good places to start and there's like 50 other good ones too

Thinking puzzle games are also pretty deserving. Not sure who would be a good pick outside of Arle or Tetris. No clue who else would be good picks but the genre is extremely iconic

Then, if we're looking at someone big enough to close a direct i think MOBA is a good one to look at. League of Legends for example is pretty big in the west and everywhere in the east other than Japan. That would be a fantastic place to look for a holy **** moment to end a big direct

Umm you forgot to put hentai on the list. My god some people

I got 2
MOBA: These were the top dogs of online gaming in the early to mid 2010's. MOBA's fell off a bit in the west but remained popular in the east, mainly in China and South Korea, 2 pretty big video game markets. A LoL rep is probably the best choice here
Visual Novels: People get really attached to VN characters, and as a Danganronpa and Ace Attorney fan I can see why. Phoenix or Monokuma would be my picks from this one.

FPS is also worth mentioning, but I don't play much of that genre so I don't really want to talk about it much

I agree with Jomosensual Jomosensual 's point about FPS and puzzle games. Aside from that, I feel shoot-em-ups are something worth paying attention to as well, being a staple of the arcade scene and being a common genre for sudden gameplay shifts; Heck, SSBU even gets in on it! In addition, it also includes Spacewar!, which is one of the first video games ever (Though I doubt we'd see any direct Spacewar representation).
Seeing as the Galaxian is an item and the Space Invaders an Assist Trophy, Reimu's probably the most popular option from this genre, though it'd be funny if we somehow got something like a Gradius fighter. Yeah, I'll admit to a bit of bias here, but I do think shoot-em-ups are a notable, classic genre that's deserving of a fighter.

Visual Novels would definitely be an interesting choice for this prompt, given their popularity. Curious how the two of the most popular, Danganronpa and Ace Attorney would play in Smash Bros. given their lack of focus on combat (but when has that stopped Smash?) Given that Phoenix is out of the running thanks to us adding Jill & Leon, it's looking quite despairing for a VN character.

FPS is definitely a genre that should have representation, but I'd imagine a character like Doomguy or Master Chief would be heavy on projectiles. Of course, there's ways to fix this (at least for Doomguy) and it would overall be quite interesting to see.

I think Visual Novels have a lot of merit because you don't have to base a moveset off of the defining aspects of the gameplay-just make a moveset that best fits that character.

Though if I had to choose, I think a Beat-em-up rep would be nice to finally have. Since they were REALLY big in the arcade days and are making quite the comeback with games like River City Girls, the new Turtles, and the rerelease of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

May I introduce anyone to a proper puzzle rep in the forrm of Arle? I love the Puyo Puyo characters so this might be bias speaking but if you want a Tetris character with Tetris gimmicks without the awkwardness of a Tetromino being a character, Arle's your girl. I even have a fan moveset for her that simplifies the idea of comboing different coloured Puyo to stack garbage on your opponents.

Puyo Puyo is a big Japanese thing so she mighy get drowned out but I'm willing to step up for her. And you know I'm passionate if I'm willing to sacrifice my most wanted who also happens to be a Sega character for her.

A plus point for Danganronpa that far exceed Ace Attorney is their gameplay. Truth Bullet and Class Trial as well as other minigame is a big part of Danganronpa and would make a good moveset material. That is if you choose the main Ultimate Student as only they could use that canonically as it will look ironically morbid if you give that to Monokuma. Other than Danganronpa there's also the Fate series to which is more combat heavy and easier to implement and is quite popular.

Based on sheer demand alone, FPS/Puzzle/Open World RPG/VN seem to be the outliers but in terms of submissions, I feel that these would generate the most prolific and interesting submissions:

FPS
Open World RPG
MOBA
MORPG
Roguelikes

Puzzle submissions, to me, seem restricted to really Arle so I feel that submitting and voting for Puzzle would more or less be voting for Arle. Not that I’m against her at all but would bottleneck the submissions IMO. Remember: we voted Tetris as represented by a stage, not by a fighter. Likewise, we also favored Jill and Leon as our Capcom reps so Phoenix Wright, despite coming in second behind Crash, is ineligible until DLC. So there’s that as well. Visual novel wise, there are possible games but I don’t really know much about them. Does Dangan Ronpa and Layton work?

I feel a genre that either has a plethora of games (FPS/Open World RPG/Roguelikes) or games that has a plethora of characters (FPS/MMORPG/MOBA) is really the way to go. Or go the unique route and go with a Soulslike but, then again, we get bottlenecked cause we would just go with Chosen Undead or something.

Danganropa would but Layton is more of a puzzle game-or so I'm told.

I think FPS would be the way to go given the size of the genre in terms of popularity, games, and characters. Even if I would perfer a beat 'em up character, FPS is way less limiting and could probably give us more creativity in the moveset department. As far as genres in Smash go it feels the most "missing" if you catch my drift (other than puzzle, but as said earlier our character options are limited there). Anyways, I think characters that could be in and offer a lot of moveset potential as well as having their inclusion warranted would be Master Chief, Doomguy, Gordon Freeman, Chell (who could also act as our puzzle game rep!), Duke Nukem, any Overwatch character, a Call of Duty character (though I have no idea who that could be), one of the Guardians from Destiny-list goes on. I'm not super into FPS games but they definitely deserve at least one fighter in Infinite.

EDIT: I realize some of these aren't on Nintendo or are inelligible for other reasons, but my point is that there are a lot of possible choices in this genre.

I am a bit hazy on this but is Overwatch owned by Activision as Blizzard Entertainment is a subsidiary of Activision.

I had a more... out there idea for an MMORPG rep, but honestly, I don't know how we'd vote for a rep for that.

Also, are you REALLY surprised by the lack of FPS characters?

Surprised? Nope. I know they're not huge in Japan. But Smash shouldn't just be about the tastes of one country if the goal is to be an ultimate gaming crossover, which is what's been mentioned by Sakurai and Nintendo a number of times
