I think he's still unlockable. They probably just did it now to promote the year of Luigi.

As I plainly stated, it would be rather odd for them to not include something in the Nintendo Direct. They got so many characters, stages and features to show... no reason not to take the chance to stir up the grapevine a bit.

Probably. I don't think we'll be seeing newcomer reveals any time soon as that would really steal a lot of the momentum, but veteran reveals wouldn't steal anywhere near as much.

It's funny, though. I always wondered if they would show Luigi in Smash Bros. to celebrate the Year of Luigi. Now my questions are answered and the Year of Luigi is won. Good night everybody.

So I guess this morning's delay with the screenshot was due to a character reveal in some way. Maybe they originally weren't going to have a pic of the day since they were just going to change to a Luigi update later, or they were busy making the pictures for the direct or something. Anyway I knew you'd never fail me, late update.

Edit: Well now that the site's updated it definitely looks like the former. They probably weren't going to have a pic of the day since it was going to be replaced with LUIGI TIME! in a couple hours but they decided to put up a pick at the last minute, possibly for people like us who actually forgo sleep until the pick is updated. And people were calling Sakurai lazy.

Sonic Lost World- Probably the first Sonic game I've been legitimately interested in over a decade.
Art Academy: Definitely going to buy this.
Wario Land 3: The only Wario Land I've yet to beat. Definitely buying this.
Layton vs Wright localization: Oh god, YES! FINALLY!
A Link Between Worlds: Still looks great.
Luigi back in Smash: I was wondering if they were going to show him early.
Animal Crossing Plaza: My girlfriend's going to squee something fierce when I show this to her.

Sakurai has once again proven himself the king of wildcards. He has taken the one character has been hidden for every Smash Bros. game to date, and made him the second veteran to be confirmed since Smash 4's unveil. Well done Sakurai on blindsiding us once again.
