Come on, this one makes too much sense when you think about it. Start with Smash, add item pickup button combination and maybe a third attack button (or B-smashes for everything), include gauge attacks without making them all and only OHKOs and you have a system that satisfies everybody. No way this is going to happen. Now Smash Bros. vs. Capcom sounds fairly more plausible as something that Sakurai would allow.

It's astonishing that even with the third parties, they leave out Crash Bandicoot. What is with Sony and ditching their mascots all the time?

They didn't leave him out intentionally. Activision said no to them. In fact, Superbot made it quite clear that they tried to get Crash and Spyro but couldn't. (A famous quote they said during an interview, "It takes two to tango")

Yeah. Superbot made a lot of bad decisions. But they at least tried to make a game. it was a decent first game in all honesty.

Fun Fact: Crystal Dynamics actually said they would love to have Lara Croft in the game but wanted the new Tomb Raider to come out first. (Sony and Superbot actually went to them to get Lara) So she was purposely held back by her company. So all the other NEEDED third parties were denied for the most part.

That was the problem. And one of the reason I feel bad for them.
Many of the choices they picked we're mostly due to being screwed over by the other companies (Raiden instead of Snake? Kojima. Dante using his infamous new look? Capcom).

Probably because Mario's never really had a major reimagining. There are the Paper Mario games but they weren't meant as a reboot. In regards to this picture and 3D World, I hope these four become a team again in future games. It just works so well that it's a shame there was a 20+ year hiatus between them teaming up in a canon game.

Well, the other thing about Paper Mario is that they kept the same character designs--and just flattened them. Mario characters are rarely if ever redesigned these days--they sometimes get new details or something, but it's not like they give Peach a scantily-clad, JRPG-esque outfit.

All this PSASBR talk really makes me appreciate the unity experienced between Sakurai and Nintendo as far as Smash goes... he made some questionable calls and was probably forced in some instances to make calls he wouldn't otherwise, but compared to the experience over at Sony, it's damn near miraculous.

When Super Mario 3D World was first announced at E3 2013, I was so happy because it was finally happening... that Nintendo is finally making a new platformer game that includes the original heroes from SMB2, complete with their unique abilities... it was what I was always requesting for whenever I was filling out Club Nintendo surveys after registering Mario games.

Every time someone describes a playable Ridley as "amazing" in a leak, I just kind of don't understand it.

It's pretty damn obvious what one would have to do to make him playable, I don't see why people think it's so unfathomable to imagine without seeing it. Maybe that's just me though.
