I used to main Samus. And yeah, she's really bad. The Matchup chart are old and wrong. The only reason she was ever 50/50 with Fox is because HugS was so good. Laser and bair make it 70/30 Fox, at best.

Truefacts:

Samus and Gannondorf are my 2 least favorite matchups on jiggs.
Samus is also probably my worst matchup, solely because I've played a legit samus maybe 3 times throughout my smash career.

That makes sense. I have a couple other characters in my pocket to try to keep samus rotated out... unfortunately the only fast character I play half-well is Fox, and I am nowhere near up to speed in my fox skills. My strategy is usually a slow-playing one... in a match against a fast paced character like Falcon, Shiek, Fox etc, I usually draw back and lean on mind games so that I'm not outclassed just based on speed. Doesn't always work, but my speed game sucks, even with Fox.

Is there hope for Samus? Is there hope for me?? :urg: It'd be fun to start playing with you guys just so that I could see first-hand what works and what doesn't *wishes for more time or a hyperbolic time chamber or something*

Imo, Samus has the potential. And the speed will come if you work on it.
Speed isn't even the big deal, it's

  • The ability to interrupt air combos/punishes with nair.
  • Zoning with projectiles helps as well, combined with a recovery that is exceedingly difficult to punish (go look at the invincibility frames on bombs, it's dumb).
  • She can play odd spacing games with fsmash and weak/strong missles and do terrible things to people with just wavedash back > utilt.
  • Screw attack out-of-shield can shut down/reset several normally frame-safe spacy approaches (nair > shine, falco pillar).
  • Crouch-cancelling permits samus to body people in interesting ways, and dsmash comes out fast enough to punish a lot of weird stuff.
I've seen good samus players take people apart almost effortlessly. She is, in my opinion, the most underutilized tourney-viable character in melee.

I wish I could play her, mostly because I <3 Samus, but her style seems quite incongruent with my aggressive shield pressure shenanigans.

I took a game off of Ihavespaceballs at MIST. But I don't understand how. I did play Sheik, but I was pretty scrubby then.
Jack is weaker to ground-based styles or those that particularly punish aerial movement (such as G.Vice's). You have a pretty spaced/grounded style, and I imagine this led to consistent punishes since you were playing Sheik. I can believe Jack dropping a game, or even a full set (like he did to Sinister).

You'd be surprised. Jack has probably explored every kind of shield pressure trick Samus has at like every spacing. Sometimes it doesn't even make sense that a frame trap should exist there. It's very disorienting.

His nonsensical style also places him near the opponent's shield fairly often. He's throwing all kinds of crap at you, and the general instinct is to shield against Samus because lol that grab, but Jack is able to abuse this tendency with pressure.

Thanks guys, I'll have to dig around for some vids of some of that Samus stuff, tho I can visualize most of it. DarkAtma's Samus was also quite ridiculous when I played him the other day. He did the Super Wavedash on command, every time... so jealous.

Atma is probably (or very close to) a top 25 player nation wide, so yeah be jealous.

Check out his elo.

Hey Ziv, idk if it was you who processed the latest Rolla monthly but teams and singles are reversed in the TIO file. I saw that and decided I didn't have the time to recreate singles to fix it. But yeah, someone processed it with the incorrect data.

Stupid Karl.

I'm the one that processed it though. Last time I have faith in him to do it the right way...

I thought Marth was amazing when I mained Luigi

I also thought that ICs were bad when I played Peach for a short period of time.

It is inevitable that we develop a SOMEWHAT biased opinion on the viability of characters in relation to our main. I mean, I can see the bias every time I even consider the tiers.

Ultimately I think it boils down to how good a player is with a given character, and how well the opponent knows that character. Remember Bum? He doesn't win this particular match, but the fact that he can even keep up with Mew2King as Donkey Kong is ridiculous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGWdb0db5yA

I'm not looking to be the best player in the world. I like to play for fun, I like to get better, and at some point I'd like to be competent. That doesn't mean that I need to main with a top tier character.

Drew tells me that Bum is a pretty big player in the NY Marvel scene. I guess he plays odd characters in that game to.

Bum is just a damn good gamer.

I think you basically described everything Drew told me. It seems like he doesn't even have to try at these games, lol.
