You never addressed Fire Emblem, but I think the conversation is becoming pointless. You’ve got your preferences and I don’t think there’s any room for changing your mind. If cutscenes with voice acting is your bottom bar for a story to be engaging... more power to you. There’s plenty of studios serving up interactive movies these days.
Personally I love games like Hollow Knight where the lore needs to be pieces to together from background details and context. No need to cutscenes and plainly laid out motivations. And some games are just plain enjoyable without a story. Whether it’s a satisfying gameplay loop, challenging puzzles or just something that’s fun with friends, lots of games light on plot are entertaining.
I should point out, I have a good friend who also feels like any game without a story is pointless. I disagree with him too, but at least know there’s more of you out there
