I don't mean to discredit popularity and while its hard to measure popularity, I'm sure Geno has higher demand in the Smash community. But outside of that he definitely falls flat where as other characters don't.

I do think his popularity is the only reason he is considered "deserving" and in my oppinion that isn't enough when other deserving characters have that and more.

That's why I feel he specifically deserves a spot in Smash. Not any other game.

First leak video I ever saw? Posted in 2008. A Brawl leak. Geno on Flatzone. Anyone remember that? I do.

Does anyone deserve a spot? Sakurai doesn't have strict qualifications for fighter and there can be a great number of reasons to justify making a character into a fighter. Sakurai himself was interested in Geno simply because he thought he'd make an interesting fighter for having a gun for a hand. That's good enough for him.

People seem to think that these Smash fighters needed to tick off something specific in order to earn the spot. But do you even know what those checkmarks are if they actually exist?

Depends on what is meant by "deserve". Most people view it as an objective statement, which is of course bull**** as no character can be said to objectively deserve it. However, I view it as subjective, as in who that person thinks most qualifies for Smash to them. In which case I see no problem with using the term. If people have a better term that signifies the subjectivity of it while still getting the same point across, I'll use that instead.

If I were to be honest with how I feel, I feel the same way in a sense. But I do think longevity qualifies to me that extra thing outside of popularity. There are characters who are popular, but it's only been recent, and it's impossible to tell right now whether that will stay as the game continues or if it's a passing phase. Since Geno's been wanted since Melee, I've been convinced it's not just a passing phase.

And personally, I'd prefer Banjo & Kazooie over Geno because they're about the same in terms of popularity/longevity, while also being the faces of their own self-titled franchise as well as being Nintendo icons back in the N64 era. But I also try to recognize my bias and Geno has a lot more going for him than I originally thought. I agree with many of your reasons, though.

This feels a bit misleading.
Translate calls LGPE a "trial" version, which is how they've been demoing the game, it is the full game but you can only play 15 minutes or so of it.
They haven't b een doing that for Ultimate.

I try not to throw out words like "deserving," because it feels subjective and arbitrary, when we have no idea just exactly who Sakurai deems appropriate until after said character(s) are officially introduced to us.

I have my dream choices, sure, but I'm fine with anyone that Sakurai deems is worthy of being in the game. At this point, I've got so many characters to try out in Ultimate as is that I honestly don't know who I'll end up using with in the long run.

Now that we're going into character wish-list part of the Smash cycle, let me just plug my son, the Demi-fiend.

Absolutely fabulous

If we're gonna go on the "historical" train, I have an hour long video essay on the history of SMT spanning 25 years, (30 if you count MT), and the fact that his game was the first international Megaten game opened the way for other western Atlus releases.

If we're gonna go on the "popularity" train, he still gets fanart made of him to this day 15 years after his release and got featured on crossover DLC with SMT's latest mainline on top of being by far the most recognizable and popular mainline protagonist.

And if we're gonna go on the "cool" train, he can shoot lasers out of his eyes and punch gods in the face. I'd go on, but you're probably already convinced.

Yes it probably will unless they keep them "locked" (Remember all but the original 8-12 will be unlocked from the start.) Also they could just do a direct before the event. If this is true, a Smash Direct is guaranteed by November 3rd

Probably if it's the release version. Which would mean we;d probably have all characters revealed beforehand.

I'm going to remain doubtful over this though. Seems really early to have the final version out in the public, but it IS a Nintendo event so idk.

Also, it feels surreal that we're only 7 weeks away from Ultimate's release, and less than that from knowing the entire roster. It's going to be an interesting ride, that's for sure.

Another bit of useless trivia: In precisely a week, we'll be under 1000 hours until Ultimate's release.
