Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Pokemon is fun, and TBH that's all I look for in a game. I could care less about story, art, music or whatever if I'm not having fun. I could also care less about how "different", "ambitious" or "how much depth" a game is/has if I'm having fun. Call me old fashioned, but gameplay tops everything for me. I'll take simplistic graphics and lazy/poor writing any day of the week if it means the game itself is fun to play.

The only problems I have with Pokemon is the reliance on grinding and RNG for its competitive environment. A rework of the IV and EV systems would do the series wonders, but I honestly doubt it will ever happen. Pokemon's main target demographic is kids, which the online fanbase likes to forget a lot when they demand more depth or darker themes, and that definitely includes me, as I'm fully aware my wants for the series are unrealistic. However, the games are still fun, so I stick around.

Now, to avoid being completely off topic, Dunsparce is objectively the best Pokemon and if he isn't your most wanted Smash DLC, you're doing it wrong.
Fun is preferential, not objective. The reason there's so many genre of games to begin with is because people have fun with different things. Some people have fun with FPS games but just because others don't, it doesn't mean that those games aren't allowed to be fun for those that enjoy them. Some people just have fun playing Pokemon on a deeper level.

Agreed on that second one. Pretty much every monster collecting RPG that ISN'T Pokemon handles stat maximizing in a quick and simple way that makes IVs and EVs look like an absolute joke and even some of those games still have children as their target demographic.

Funny joke.

"I don't care about your point that you're being aggressive about and I like *** tree turtle anyway thank you" - @Cutie Gwen

Wait does this mean the shorter reply I make the longer the essay will be or...
In other words, I have absolutely no reason to take what they say seriously since them not caring about what I say isn't going to make Torterra any better or change the fact that it sucks but they'll just make troll comments saying otherwise. Very well then.

Saber-visual novels

Arthas-mmorpg

Can anyone think of better reps for these genres?
Doomguy for FPS would be infinitely better than Tracer.

Also, Chief’s been deconfirmed.

Okay I missed most of this pokemon discussion but like, I don't see what's so "shallow" about liking a pokemon just for its design when that's often meant to be the main appeal of most pokemon. Like yeah I used to play competitive and there are plenty of pokemon I learned to appreciate more because they were useful to me competitively, but like, I don't think there's a wrong reason to like a fictional cartoon monster. I'd go so far as to say that line of reasoning is even kind of elitist.

Chill out and let people like what they like. Some people would call you shallow for only liking pokemon that are somehow useful for you competitively - I'm not one of those people but some would.

It seems balanced to me.
So far Sega has been going towards different series with their reps, so unless this Mona is from a different series, no go...until Shadow or Tails joins in the future Smash titles

Mona as a Joker echo was pretty much a joke. just make them both Captain Falcon clones

If I had to pick a new SEGA franchise to have a playable character in Smash, it'd be Yakuza.

Stats, man. That's just how it is in any RPG ever. How a piece of equipment or a how a monster looks just doesn't mean jack compared to how strong or how much utility it has to get you through harder battles. Caring about looks or design alone is just shallow. They're overrated because a good amount of the fanbase puts so much value in them despite the fact that they're not even that good. Pokemon just doesn't have to stress its players to care that much about stats and utility because like I said, the game is built so any low tier trash monster can solo the game. Besides, only like 5 Starters are competent outside the story and the rest are either unimpressive or just outright terrible.
Depends on the gen really, and the track record kind of has been two are good one is bad.

Eh its more like 12.

Now now, I think we all know who should have the honors of being the second Namco rep:

What fine taste!

While everyone is entitled to their own opinions...

...isn't this literally Team Rocket's and Silver's raison d'etre? The whole "I only like them since they're Smogon approvedTM" idea?

I feel like most RPGs are set up so you can power through the game with the bad-stats stuff, and it's even a mark of how good you are if you can win despite the stats. I can even call back to Skyrim - the most iconic armor in the game is the first set you get, so it's incredibly weak, and the set that he wears in the promos is even mixed light cuirass with heavy everything else so there's two different skills needed to make it good. Doesn't stop it from looking badass though.

But you do you. Me? I'm taking my :007::002::006::059: team through as many Pokémon games as I can get them no matter what Smogon says I should use. When Smogon starts programming the AI, then we can talk.

Well I personally can't get behind the single player storyline of any Pokemon game besides maybe like 2 of them. I am only into Pokemon for its competitive scene. The whole thing about "making it through the game with a mon who has bad stats" only really subtracts the uniqueness of each Pokemon for me. Each one feels very heavily individualized when you are building a specifically bred team to have a certain move set up, ability, Ev spread, nature, etc. Hell, I have 3 Gengars that are all completely different. Obviously in this context, some mons are good while others aren't, I think going deeper into the game makes each Pokemon feel differentiated from each other.

Ah, new interaction I got hit by.

Countered one of Ryu's light attacks and his buffered shoryuken just straight up went through it. That was fun.

i know I get **** when I say I like Serperior and Infernape because I think they are cool but since Snek is "**** competitive" and Infernape is fire fighting, its not good tastes
Serperior is the only Unova starter that sees competitive play(Think its still OU with contrary), the other 2 Unova starters are considerd the bottom of bottom tier of all the starters(only better then Meganium I guess)

Infernape always was solid, but it got powercreeped by Blaziken once that thing got speedboost

Literally who cares about Pokemon stats? Most of its fans are kids.
I'm 40 and I still care more about how my team looks than I do their stats.

Doesn't stop me from breeding the ideal natures and maximizing their EVs though...

I mean, infernape still sees usage as being one of the better mach punch users, as well as having access to the elemental punches with iron fist. But yeah, not really much reason to use him outside of that, Blaziken is pretty much always better. Shame infernape can't get much usage in the current gen, given you couldn't run him in gen 6 due to every player and their mother using Talonflame

I thought it only affected :ultkingdedede: & :ulticeclimbers:...

@Mr. Wario Look at what your character is doing to people.
Our domination is nigh. Resistance is futile.

Were it not for the blue haired one :ultchrom:, the roster would have already bowed to our strength...But in time, even he shall know his place.

Infernape is amazing though. All three of the Sinnoh starters are, really.

I'm not like other guys, I don't love my Pokemon for their appearences, I love them for their stats.
