Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I am actively hoping custom moves get removed. It was a neat experiment, but the lack of variety, development time, and unlocking method ruined it. I'd prefer a new flashier mode to replace that vacant dev time.

Say, provided that there is a Smash related Direct coming this month (not counting early next month) that people have been speculating about, do you think we'll get an announcement for such a Direct possibly next week? Some people did speculate that it could come in late April. Of course, there is no guarantee this will happen, but I thought it would not hurt to bring it up anyways.

Say what if we got custom Final Smashes? For example we can switch Kirby's FS for his old one!
That would be broken af yo

Idk who else would want to change most of the Final Smashes back to the original but I LOVE Lucario's FS from Brawl

If we were to get Custom Final Smashes, I think the most applicable non-broken af way would to go the route of current custom specials. Like altering the nature of the final smash rather than making them entirely different. Like Mario’s Finale could have final smash customs which includes:
  • ice balls instead of fireballs
  • Adds a vacuum effect in front of the fireballs
  • Doesn’t push opponents backwards but deals knock back at the last hit after all the fireballs pass.

That would certainly be a more balanced way of doing it, but I don't think there is either the appeal or desire for development time to be put towards this sort of feature. I mean if it is in and works, then great, but it would certainly not be something that I would use personally, just like custom moves.

Well in fairness, one of those announcements was so that people would stop complaining about a 3DS game and the other was that so people wouldn't complain about a 3DS game.
The former (or latter?) was announced one week before E3. Do you really think Nintendo changed their plans at the very last minute to include the Pokémon announcement due to the backlash?

Custom moves variety was fone. Some characters did get a larger difference between them but overall characters changed quite a bit when switching the moves up. The competitive scene never truly drmonstrated this but in my own testing and games there was a lot present.

The implementation could definitely be better.

So if Blizzard had a rep, who do you think it would be?

Thrall? Kerrigan (Zerg Queen version naturally)? Some op card in hearthstone?

By variety I mean more so actual changes from the norm itself, not some version of it such as "it can go in bursts but won't flinch!" or "it will be slower but rack up damage if it hits!". Looking at you, Mario...

The man has a wild array of moves and instead of giving him, say, the Ice Flower, the spinning cape, the flying cape (different recovery!), the boomerang or whatever, he gets a larger fireball that goes at a snail's pace. I understand that developing all these moves would be nigh impossible, but such a concept not exploring so many characters' move pool is odd. Only Miis and Palutena got that special treatment (and the Miis was just different versions of existing Smash moves for the most part)

Pokemon custom moves for example could be literally anything. Fire Emblem could use different weapons. Star Fox has the Assault/Command weapons, Donkey Kong has access to barrels, orange grenades (likewise so does Diddy) and his coconut gun. So much lost potential!

Blizzard needs to support the Switch first, but it'd most likely be someone from Warcraft or Overwatch.

I think that the potential exists for the custom special moves, but the unlocking criteria for them was the most notable problem, and some of the custom special moves were too impractical to even touch.

I talked about this an eternity ago, and imo the most likely candidates would be Varian Wrynn or Thrall. Blizz has a history on Nintendo consoles, though not a recent one. I don't really anticipate Blizzard putting an actual game on the Switch any time soon, but now that Smash has done several things to add the"faces" of various genres (Cloud with JRPGs, Ryu with fighting games, etc), why not add a Blizzard character who covers both the RTS genre and the MMO genre with a Warcraft character? Maybe even Arthas would be possible seeing as he was integral to both WoW and Warcraft.

A Blizzard character has astronomical levels of unlikelihood, but I am certainly not opposed to the idea.

I see your Leeroy Jenkins and ask for Jeff from the Overwatch team.

Speaking of a Blizzard character, I wouldn't mind seeing one. However, Bilzzard needs to have a presence on Switch first for it to ever happen.
Oh yeah you right.
Maybe they'll make The Lost Vikings VC release or something. I think the largest thing getting in the way of a Blizzard character is actually that Blizzard isn't a Japanese company. Diddy is still the only Western born character playable in Smash, and he is in one of Nintendo's big franchises. No Blizzard character has that luxury. As cool as it would be to see Varian or Thrall, I highly doubt they'll ever happen unless Blizzard starts making big moves.

Ghostcrawler with a nerf gun and a moose mount.

I took my idealistic roster from the Roster Thread, and put the characters in chronological order, like an all star mode. And here's what I got.

Yeah... good luck on all star mode...

And I counted how many newcomers I chose for each "era".
Arcade/NES era (80-89)- 5 newcomers
SNES era (90-95)- 6 newcomers
N64 era (96-00)- 8 newcomers
GC era (01-05)- 3 newcomers
Wii era (06-11)- 5 newcomers
Wii U era (12-16)- 3 newcomers
Switch era (17-present)- 1 newcomer
The biggest group of newbies is from N64 era, which was my first era of gaming (started with PS1 and GBC). Surprised myself by how many SNES characters I put here, especially since I didnt play Snes until much later when my older brother bought us one. Though, many of these SNES characters had games on N64, so that may play a factor. I kinda expected myself to put more GC characters, since I got GC shortly after N64 era ended, and its still my favorite era. Its not really news to anyone that they prefer characters from the era they grew up with, but I still found it interesting

So how about you guys? Try taking a pool of characters you'd like to see in the game and see if they match up with your introduction years of games. You dont need a pic like I made, but bonus points if ya do.

Nothing like Snake if you ask me. Doomguy would have no traps. I'd see him as a quick zoner with strong projectiles, but is quite weak when hit. To counter this, he has the chainsaw for melee attacks. Weapons include Super Shot Gun, Rocket Launcher, Plasma Rifle, chaingun and maybe the pistol. Only new weapon in DOOM 2016 were grenades and assault rifle (unless they were in 3, havent played it yet), I dont really see either playing a major part in the moveset. Of course, the BFG for his final smash! Have his home stage just be Hell. Having Wario summon a Cyberdemon during story mode would be hilarious. Id love to see him, but I think he just has a small shot for DLC.
Just one tiny tiny tiny thing about your roster, but Adeline was in Kirby Dreamland 3 first, not Crystal Shards. So she would come before Pichu and the Ocarina crowd.

Just a slight correction: the Ike that you are using appeared in Path of Radiance on April 20, 2005. Lucario first appeared in the movie Lucario and the Mystery of Mew in Japan on July 16, 2005. The first time he was in a game was in Diamond/Pearl on September 28, 2006. Just switch Ike and Lucario if you're going to use PoR Ike.

she pretty much is the poster child for her genre though. when your game i reviewed as the near perfection of the genre (which is action hack n' slash) you are the face. when your game announcements healine events you are a face. bayonetta isnt niche at this point. after 2 especially.

top 5 id want: midna and wolf link, shadow, impa, rabbid peach, and baldr.
I figured Dante was the poster child for that genre though.

Yeah, it would happen within the next 5 days or so. Nintendo's big investor briefing is this coming Wednesday night, if you're in North America. They typically announce stuff around or during the meeting. Monday is probably the earliest we could expect news. Weekends are a no go.

Does anybody want Nintendo to run a new line of Amiibo for Smash 5? It'd be great to get characters at reasonable prices or even in new designs/poses.
no. only new characters should get amiibos. my wallet can't handle any more.

I sure hope so. I don't care when the next bit of news comes, I just want them to tell us when we can expect it. Even if they say "don't expect anything until E3", that's fine, because I just wanna get rid of this anticipation of "will they give us more news soon or won't they".

Oh, I wouldn't worry about that. They have to talk about the upcoming year's releases at the meeting. Smash and Nintendo Online will be talked about in some capacity, at the very least.

Definitely not Varian. As a Blizzard fan since I was like 5, their most recognizable chars (before Overwatch) would be Diablo, Kerrigan, (maybe Zeratul or Raynor) Thrall, Arthas and Illidan.

Varian doesn't come close as those 3 WC chars. I mean just look at Heroes of the Storm stating roster and the first heroes they prioritized to be patched in. Those are the most recognizable faces that they felt were also unique enough.

I would wager it would be either Kerrigan, Thrall or Arthas, with Thrall being probably the most likely followed by Arthas, solely due to their MMO importance as well (as opposed to Kerrigan's only Starcraft appearance).

I honestly wanna see some characters that were meant to appear at one point or another like Ayumi Tachibana, Mach Rider, Dixie Kong, Nintendog, Plusle and Minun (maybe), Toon Zelda, Tetra (maybe), and a Rhythm Heaven character!

Thrall, Arthas or Illidan. Despite Overwatch's success Warcraft remains their posterchild, and those three stand above the rest. I'd probably bet on Arthas as Thrall has become a very unpopular character, and Illidan has never been as popular as the Death Knight.

Starcraft and Diablo are already getting a harsh treatment in Heroes of the Storm, so I see no way they'd be represented.

My Pipe Dream roster starts off with the whole Sm4sh roster returning.

Include characters that had been cut:
Wolf, Snake, Ice Climbers, Pichu (because why not), Young Link (with adjusted moveset that is uniquely his own, but no transformations), and both stand-alone Ivysaur and stand-alone Squirtle (Ironically don't care about either of these two or Pichu, but why not).

And then I want them to include these new characters:

Waluigi & Geno (they already have Cloud, why not Geno too?)

Simon Belmont & Bomberman (yes, BOTH of them WITH Snake)

Cranky Kong & K. Rool.

And then I have two crazy ones here.

Mother-flipping FLINT from Mother-flipping 3.

And Marina from Mischief Makers. (Hilariously within reason as she's ALSO owned by Square-Enix)

And I'd be pretty much oversatisfied with the roster at this point. I don't particularly care what other characters get in beyond these.

I merged your two posts together since you double posted (subsequent posts one after another) which is against the site rules. Be careful not to double post and remember you can edit your post to avoid getting warnings/infractions. Or you can just wait till someone posts after you.

And to keep on topic, my pipe dream characters are:

  • Joe and Mac (Joe and Mac)
  • Earthworm Jim
  • Jack from Harvest Moon
  • Scorpion (Morta kombat)
  • M. Bison
  • Big Bad Mr Frosty
  • Starkiller (Force Unleashed)
  • Paperboy
  • Tali vas Normandy (Mass Effect)

If there is one next week then it'll either be announced on Monday for Tuesday or Tuesday for Thursday. Hope the former as I have work on Thursday.

Assuming that there's no limitations from Nintendo's end, it would without question be Overwatch's Tracer. I'm thinking she has a lot of powerful special attacks based off her in game abilities but they're cooldown heavy for balence. She'd also be the first lesbian character in Smash, though not the first LGBT+ one (Corrin on B, Birdo on T)

I see your Leeroy Jenkins and ask for Jeff from the Overwatch team.

His final Smash would be nerfing characters into oblivion.
Real talk, I actually lost interest in playing OW when it became apparent that the beta builds were for catching bugs only and not community feedback. IF somethign worked but was stupid OP in it, it would get into the main game and then the backlash would result in an OverNerf later.

Could happen. Though I guess it depends on what questions the stock holders ask.

Smash needs to have a shoot a a proper grapple character. Bowser and Ganondorf have fancy grabs but I'm not sure you could call either a grappler.

it would be an interesting take if they could turn Spring Man into a grappling character. I mean grabbing is a big mechanic in the game, being part of the rock-paper-scissors of attacking, shielding and grabbing. It would also work pretty well with the spring-y arms they have, being able to reach out and grab opponents. Mix in some punches and flavours from different ARMS and you could take Spring Man in an interesting direction that would strongly differentiate him from Little Mac. Not that I could ver see them being even close in play style.

We had a grappler once. :popo:

Rawk Hawk, Buzzwole, Midna, Rhythm Wrestler and Ridley would be my picks for potential grappler characters.

Not that it really matters, but do you think what Sakurai views as a very iconic third-party heavily depends on how big of a presence a third-party IP was significant, successful, and marketed in Japan. For a quick example, take something like Rayman or Doom Guy, it might be highly big IP in Europe and NA, but the prescence that the IP has in Japan probably is very small, which might make it harder for Sakurai to consider the character. He would probably be more comfortable with IPs that he knows have been in a big deal in Japan. Do you think it might be a big obstacle for Sakurai when it comes to choosing third-parties that are not of Japanese origin.

I wouldn't think so. Bayonetta hasn't had the strongest presence in Japan, yet she still got in Smash due to fan demand from NA and EU. If the character is popular enough, I could see Sakurai overlooking its obscure status in Japan and adding the character solely for those overseas.

Actually, I'd argue that characters who aren't very well-known overseas dissuade Sakurai from adding them. He might have not cared that much when Smash was younger (64 and Melee), but now that it's an established series with a strong fanbase in NA, I think he's trying to be more careful with his choices. After all, being too obscure for the West is part of the reason why we still haven't gotten Takamaru.
