Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

So here's a kinda fun hypothetical.

You get to pick five newcomers for the new Smash...but with one condition: the characters need to have preexisting amiibo.
What five characters do you pick?
Im 90% sure the reason you're asking this is that chrom, celica, daruk, and isabelle have amiibo :p

Waluigi, Shovel Knight, Isabelle, Daruk and Chrom.

Amibos are really nice to get.

Shovel Knight, Resetti, Bandana Waddle Dee, Chibi-Robo and Qbby?! Sign me up!

Though getting to play as a Guardian is a very tempting proposition...

Aww man. I just had a half lucid dream where Banjo-Kazooie 1 and 2 ports were confirmed for Switch followed by a trailer of Banjo and Kazooie sleeping and being woke up to the burning Smash symbol and Smash cast. I then woke up with a sudden urge to check Smash news.

Still nothing...
I've been dreaming about Smash nonstop since the trailer back in March. The lack of news is killing me, man.

Tiki (Let's get a real manakete.)
A BOTW champion (Daruk/Mipha would be best but Revali and Urbosa are fine.)
Inkling Boy 2 as an alt (I really like the green hair color and design, I don't even play Splatoon and I want it.)
BOTW Zelda (Also known as pants Zelda... please, oh please Sakurai!)
K.K. (While Isabelle is a better AC rep I really like dogs and Duck Hunt isn't doing it.)

How dare you, Zeb. What the hell. I'm appalled.

...I said five, so Waluigi should be there too.

In all seriousness I was musing over the fact that most of my most wanted (RIP Crash and Decidueye) had amiibo so I figured I may as well pose it as a hypothetical.

Just kidding with the last one, Wolf Link and the amiibo cards count, then Shadow Mewtwo instead of Qbby

I just thought about the fact that if Crash or Spyro got announced. They'd be one of only three characters to have both an amiibo and a Skylanders figurine.

Assuming newcomers get amiibos this time that is.

INKLING

Mechanic: Ink
• Covering the stage in ink allows the Inkling to trade average speed for a quick swim as a cephalopod.
• Ink gradually disappears. Ink can cover ledges, but has a faster vanishing rate.
• Ink recharges automatically on a timer and recovers faster if a squid is in a pool of ink.
• Ink does not slow down opponents, but can cover them. An ink drenched foe will leave drippings while moving about the stage, helping you in your task of sloppifying the stage.

B Splattershot: Shoots ink that has a slight downward arc at the end.
- Can be aimed. Can be held, allowing the Inkling to move slowly back and forth.
- Little damage, less range than Fox's lasers. Uses Ink.

Down B Splat Bomb: Pulls out a Splat Bomb as an item.
- Can be thrown. Detonates after a few seconds. Uses ink.
- Coats the floor around its explosion in ink. In the air, the paint explosion is circular and coats any surface it touches.
- If it explodes in ink, a half-sphere bubble emerges form the ink and pops with added knockback.

Side B Squid form: Turns into a squid with a short forward hop in the intended direction.
In Ink: Squid form is half-submerged. Moves faster than the Inkling and pivots well.
- Cannot dodge, but has one low jump.
- B morphs back into an Inkling.
- A press of A spins the squid as it dashes forward for a multi-hit attack.
- Can perform Smash attacks. This will transform the squid into an Inkling which goes through its Smash animation.

In the Air: Does a little forward hop and plummets to the ground. Splashes into ink if there is any. Does damage on the way down and slight pushback with its splash landing.

On the Ground: Squid flops when moved left or right, cannot attack or jump with the jump button, and is very slow. A press of 'A' when the squid lands on the floor from a flop will have it flop higher.

Up B Super Jump: Similar to King DeDeDe's high arching jump Up B special.
A circular marker indicates where the Inkling will land.

- A press of B while jumping will have the Inkling fire ink downwards. Uses ink.
- Landing in ink will cause a ripple wave with the Inkling at the epicenter. This gets rid of the ink, but causes massive horizantol knockback

Forward Smash Ink Roller: Hoists a roller above its head and swings downward to whack the floor and then push the roller a distance forward. If you have ink, the roller will be coated and will spread ink on the floor and cover the opponent. Does more damage when inked. Solid Smash.

Down Smash Splash Wall: Inkling leaps up and slams a splash wall pole into the ground. The thrust causes a small shockwave for damage and pushback. The Splash Wall is basically a doorway frame that pours ink from the top onto the floor beneath
(If you have ink). Enemies going through will be coated in ink. The wall lasts for a short duration and two can be set up at a time for stage control.

Up Smash Burst Bomb: Lobs an ink filled balloon in a high arc. Uses ink, nice vertical knock-back and explodes on impact.

A: Swipes with its gun
Toward A: Slides forward while two-handing the gun utilizing it as a ram
Down A: Performs two quick sweep kicks in succession
Up A: Flip kick

Dash A: Baseball slide the male inkling performs in Smash trailer

Neutral Aerial: Runs in the air. Gives a slight boost forward when the Inkling hits the ground if timed right.
Forward Aerial: Swipe with the paint brush attached to the gun nozzle. Uses ink if you have it, which increases range and damage
Back Aerial: Two straight back kicks in succession
Down Aerial: Swings gun downwards similar to Samus's down aerial.
Up Aerial: Flip kick with brush

Grabs: Lunges forward, hopping one on foot if missed
A: Hits with butt of the gun
Forward: Leaps on enemy and uses them as a sled before stepping off
Back: Falls on back and catapults them backwards with feet
Up: Lobs them up in an arch similar to how they lob their Up Smash Burst Bomb
Down: Uses alot of ink. Dunks a giant bucket over their head. Coats enemy in ink. Half their body is covered by an upside down bucket. They cannot attack until the bucket pops off from movement.

I had a dream that we got the MC from Persona 5 in Smash 5.

Now that I think about it, it doesn't seem that far fetched and he seems to meet all the criteria for a Smash newcomer.

Does anybody want Nintendo to run a new line of Amiibo for Smash 5? It'd be great to get characters at reasonable prices or even in new designs/poses.

We actually just talked about Joker the other day. Based on Atlus and Sega's relationship with Nintendo, I wouldn't call it farfetched at all, but certainly not something to expect.

It sounds good, but flooding the amiibo shelf with so many new characters might not be a good idea. It would also be a pain for collectors. I'd rather get a few new amiibos with each game.

I just hope that if there is a new line, any returning veteran amiibos still work with the new game. I may at least be tempted to get a hypothetical 2nd Sonic Smash amiibo regardless what happens. But I don't want to have to get a double of everyone of my Smash Amiibos (Granted I only have 6 plus a Mario series Waluigi. I'm not a collector trying to get them all.)

If anything, Bayonetta doesn't fit in because she's not even the poster girl for action adventure/whatever genre her game is.

I imagine adding her was also a personal favor, though.

Something I like to point out for Rayman is that he's more or less been abandoned by Ubisoft as their mascot. In fact I'm probably one of the few who thinks the most likely Ubisoft rep is one of the Assassins instead since they become the main mascot for them.

I don't think that would happen, I can't imagine an AC character going arround hidden blading some yoshi's lmao. If ubisoft wants one of their characters in the game it's probs rayman or bust.

Amiibos eh? Let's see...
Waluigi
Shovel Knight
Daruk
Midna
Chibi Robo

Also, on the topic of Smash Dreams- They've been controlling me since the announcement as well. My more recent one took place in an alleyway at night, with a bright light casting shadows of characters old and new. Samus, Sonic, Duck Hunt were all visible, and Banjo & Kazooie were there too. Except Kazooie was playing a trumpet, not a kazoo. Such unfaithfulness to the character startled me and woke me up :p . Come on, make it happen already, Nintendo!

Unfortunatley, I gotta agree with the first statement. The only thing that really keeps getting him games is more or less his creator (Micheal Ancel) himself. However, I think Ubisoft would recognize Raymans popularity in the Nintendo community, so he'd probably be only up against Rabbids. I've been wrong about Smash speculation for the past 4 years, though, so were probably getting Sam Fisher in Smash instead.

Bayonetta was (probably) because
  1. Her games started on Nintendo consoles.
  2. Nintendo almost fully funded Bayo 2 when Platinum Games was in a tight spot.
  3. She was probably the only reasonable pick amongst the top ballot winners like Goku, Shrek, etc.

Given that the Smash Ballot stated that the ballot is specifically for video game characters only, any votes for the likes of Goku and Shrekwould have already been discarded. They won't be among the top due to that reason.

Excuse me whilst I barf at the idea of Assasin’s Creed in Smash

Rayman is still pretty iconic character in his own right, and he would fit in much better with the cast. Even if Ubisoft doesn’t see Rayman as a mascot, he is easily the most requested character from that company, and I doubt Sakurai would pass over fan demand for a character from AC.

And really? You think Ubisoft not using Rayman as a mascot would seriously hurt his chances? Did you forget that Smash Bros brought in Mega Man in 2013, a period where Capcom had all but forgotten he existed?

I remember the cancellation of Mega Man's games as well as his exclusion from both MvC3 and UMvC3.

I'm gonna have to go with:
Isabelle
Callie and Marie (As one character)
Chibi Robo
Shovel Knight
Waddle Dee (If he counts as bandana dee)
I'd put Midna if I had a 6th pick

You know, I think in the upcoming Smash game I'd really like to have Smash Run return, this time with functionality to play online or with friends. Even make it 8-player online. I really loved that mode - it was probably my favourite new addition to the for 3DS and for Wii U games.

Smash Run Battle Royale.

Sora in Smash is likely not happening, because of Kingdom Hearts usage of Disney characters, and I strongly doubt Disney will license their characters for a fightning game, plus with Nintendo's deal with Universal Studios, they would be promoting their biggest competition in the theme park business, and that's a No-No. And no Disney = No Kingdom Hearts. Disney is a real pain when it comes to licensing as well.

Sora isn't exactly ''niche", you bring up valid points, but he's far from ''niche".

A lot of third party requests are niche right now, but Sora ain't one of them.

Here's a question I haven't seen people ask. Do you think that, to tie in with E3, Nintendo will have a demo of Smash 5 running in Best Buy and stuff like what they did for Smash 4 back in 2014?

Very possible considering that a release date is very close.

If that doesn't happen, a downloadable demo like what they did with Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. Maybe they could also take a page from Splatoon's Testfire or ARMS' Testpunch and have a temporary online demo.

Your alerts must be exploding with all these quotes.

For me, Shovel Knight, Isabelle, Toon Zelda, Solaire of Astora, and Wolf Link and Midna.

I remember being hype about this as one of the demos was near me.

It was hell to even get to look at the thing. So no. Please no.
