The last super well-known and beloved NES games that currently don't have a character in Smash are

1. Dragon Quest
2. Ninja Gaiden
3. Contra

I can't really recall anything else that's on the level of those 3 up there. In terms of Nintendo games, maybe Balloon Fight? That's it though.

Balloon Fight f*cking rocks, the physics were perfect, really felt like I was floating on a pair of balloons and it's always fun to see how far i get in Balloon Trip when I take my 3DS with me on road trips.

You may not like it but it is a game where Nothing Is Wrong With The Game, so by default it can't be bad, it's merely up to personal preference.

If their movesets are interesting and fun to play i would gladly take any number of fire emblem characters, sword wielders or not.

Heck, just give me a unique and fun moveset and i'll be happy even if the fighter is a potted plant lol!

Can't wait for Alm or Seliph.

No really, they're both pretty well-liked and would cover Gaiden and the Jugdral games. Don't need to change the moveset drastically or anything.

Maybe Double Dragon, Bionic Commando or Ghost N' Goblins. But really Ryu Hayabusa would be my preferred choice. The Conta guys, Bill and Lance, would make for perfect assist characters though.

Also, yeah Tekken could pull off a potted plant. But I'm still sad the vampire girl got in instead of us getting a giant praying mantis.

Ah, if we're talking about magic users, I do like how SMT handles it by making the user able to use both swords, items, and guns with special ammo to be a useful utilitarian character while he himself summons his more powerful specialist demons to do big damage or heals.

I hope one day we get a moveset that's super based around summoning creatures like that.

since im a filthy waluigi sinner, i guess it would just be fighting all originally scrapped characters who later made it in (i.e. villager, pit, ice climbers, etc.)

I see you have excellent taste. The Gargoyle's Quest games were pretty good and Demon's Crest was one of the best things I got from the Virtual Console.

Holy heck I just fought a Ganondorf on quickplay and that guy is plain scary in this game. Just a little bit speed is all he needed to feel actually oppressive, I almost never felt safe throughout the entire match because I knew he could always just run up and Down-B to get through my razor leafs, and he hits hard enough that even playing as Charizard feels like playing as a lightweight. Also that F-smash, while not actually that practical competitively, is way harder to punish then it looks like it should be.

I still think he'll be lower in the tier list because his weaknesses are still really exploitable, especially his recovery, but I don't mind since that character actually plays and feels like the King of Evil should - striking fear into the hearts of his enemies.

If anything it should be . Characters who got promoted from supporting/hazard roles.
