Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

So, have we figured out exactly what is required to be put in "Elite Smash" yet? Because I'm pretty sure winning percentage is involved.

I have seven characters over 1mil GSP and my roster GSP is something like 1.3mil. But my winning percentage is around .400 due to me trying out new characters and constantly losing with Daisy as I butt my head against that wall repeatedly. I'm thinking I might only play with :ultlucina::ultzelda::ultcorrin: for awhile to get my winning percentage back up, see if that works.

Nah, it's relative due to the nature of GSP.
Like being 1 mil with Duck Hunt is probably Elite tier, but 1.4 mil with Chrom probably isn't enough.

I should try to play online more. It's fun, even if I get stomped.

By the way, how does Classic scoring work? Had a super good run with Inkling and didn't die but it only went up to 9.8. :/

You can't die to get to 9.9.
Not even with a ticket.

Ah, then that's just bad luck. You'll either have to do it faster or with less damage.
Figured damage probably had something to do with it. I finished the Fountain of Dreams stage at like 150%, which probably affected the score. Thanks!

Well the game is out, and there are not news on the corner.

So, yeah.

Personally I can wait for the DLC announcements, Im pretty happy with the game.
Same here. I just want to see footage of Joker. After that, I'm fine with waiting however long it takes for him and the rest to come.

That's a fair point. I wonder if the character choice has something to do with it.

My seven that are currently above 1mil are :ultlucina::ultcorrin::ultchrom::ultrobin::ultzelda::ultyounglink::ultzss:. All of whom I see fairly regularly online. The fact that so many people play them might skew the percentages and hurt the quality of the wins?

I dunno. I just want to get the stupid thing so I stop getting tossed into 4p Smash with items on high.

If you manage to get to 9.9 (or 9.7) by Master/Crazy Hand then you can die and use a ticket to die without lowering the intensity. You still gain some intensity after the fight so you'll make it.

Man, I saw late last night the tournament that ended with Inkling vs. Pokemon Trainer in grand finals, and that Inkling looked unstoppable. Sweet Jesus Inkling can be good.

I feel like KOS-MOS is a legitimate possibility as well...
Especially assuming how big the Xeno series has gotten over the years
It seems lots of people forget that she is one of the most popular Namco characters. Namco and Monolith's relationship will ensure she keeps appearing in Monolith titles in the future though. It is very evident that they love her. Imo, she's emblematic of Namco more than Xeno and people might only know her from crossovers because Xenosaga did end abruptly as sad it is to admit it. She does have a very decent shot though and I wouldnt even be surprised if she's in the running on Nintendo's list given to Sakurai. But if she doesnt appear in this entry, at least she will continue to be a very important thing for Monolith. I imagine Monolith dont buy her from Namco because there's no need with their great relationship.

Do you think that we will get an update to improve the online experience? Im not that into the online gaming, I prefer to keep my "fights" with friends so yesterday wanted to play with some friends online, but I realized that you cant join someone locally. (i dont know if this make sense, its hard to explain this in English). The battle arena feels.... I dont know.... it could be better.

She definitely has the most cameo appearances.

I'm on the side that does not believe K. Rool is broken. He's just an actually good heavy, and that throws people. He has plenty of weaknesses, it's just up to the opponent to take advantage of them.

...That said, I dunno if I'd rank him as low as ZeRo did, but hey, I ain't a competitive player, so what do I know. :p

I honestly think a Capcom and Namco rep is inevitable. They have SO many influential franchises AND a close working relationship with Nintendo with future games coming out on the Switch. It'd be insane for Nintendo not to pick a character from that selection.

Mark my words, Dante and Nightmare are the most obvious picks (outside of like, Erdrick, but that's more due to the "leaks")

I think the main concern for her, and any older character for that matter, is can Nintendo/Bandai benefit from their inclusion outside of just Fighters Pass sales.

If KOS-MOS got in, I think it would be indicative of some sort of Xenosaga revival, whether that means porting them to the Switch or Bandai making an HD rerelease, or even a mobile game. Whether that's ports or a new entry, I think that could be the only real reason why they would choose her. Granted, she is a popular character who starred in a trilogy of games and a brief anime, but if Nintendo made the list, I feel like they're looking for more than fan service.

So for KOS-MOS fans, seeing her announced for Smash should double their hype. Because there's probably something else involving her on the horizon, too.

I'd love for it to be Nightmare but I feel Heihachi, Lloyd and KOS-MOS is more likely to happen.

I also think we'd get Monster Hunter instead of Dante being there's already Monster Hunter representation in the game.

Okay, but seriously. Just like Zinith has a large reason to like Yoshi, what's your reason for liking Littlest Pet Shop so much? Is there a tragic backstory associated with it? Does it remind you of a long lost flame or potent childhood memory? What is it about Littlest Pet Shop specifically?
Eh, people just like what they like. Why is my favorite character in Smash the discount brunette princess clone? Why is my favorite player character Hawke, from Bioware's least-liked release that isn't ME: Andromeda? Why is my favorite pokemon this ****ing guy?

Personally, I dont think Nightmare is going to be picked. Yeah, the SC VI is not on switch argument flies out the window now with the Joker reveal but I just dont feel they'd be able to implement his style. It's the same reason, imo why Sakurai had a problem adding Heihachi because imo, his mechanics would be difficult to add into smash. I think it would be the same for Nightmare. I am not sure how they would implement his terror charge for instance or his range. That's a similar problem why I think Sephiroth's masamune would have too much range.

I keep screwing over my own GSP.

Whenever I run into a player who's just a bit better then me, I keep asking for rematches thinking "if I play just a bit better, I'll get them this time"! I can't help it, that's just how I play games. When something seems frustrating but not hopeless I keep trying it over and over and over again with different tactics and strategies until I finally beat it.

The downside is that I'll fight three random people and beat all them, but then run across one person and get my butt kicked by them 5 times straight before they get bored and leave, undoing all the GSP boosts I got before. I'm not sure I'll ever get into Elite Smash if I keep this up.

Elite Smash's unlock method is very stupid. It's trying to be Splatoon's Ranked Mode unlock, but the biggest problem is that Splatoon has a very big difference compared to this game: You still gain EXP if you lose. A very small amount, yes, but still some. Problems like yours I could see becoming very common, and it seems super unhealthy for the community to discourage trying your luck against players more skilled than you in a genre where that's kind of what you're supposed to do to learn and get better. Just feels punishing for absolutely no reason.

The only reason I don't currently see Lloyd or Kos-Mos right now is because they currently aren't particularly marketable despite their dedicated following. Similar to how Yu Narukami and Makoto Yuki were skipped as well.among other things.

Heihachi I feel is also pretty likely, being a one-or-the-other pick with Nightmare. The only reason I see Nightmare more is because of recency. Plus the cheeky Link in SC2 reference that they will inevitably pull.

As for MonHun, I've been treating its representation in Smash as a hard deconfirmation. There's no particular reason I'd see for Nintendo to push the Hunter when they probably already think Rathalos represents them adequately. Plus, the surprise factor would be diminished as well.

And, well, that leaves either Chris/Jill/Leon or Dante and due to the nature of the former being more down-to-earth and more reliant on using firearms in a realistic militaristic way (aka why Snake focuses on weird explosives), I could see Nintendo erring on Dante instead.

Also, ZeRo thinks that the Samuses are good? TBH after playing plenty of them myself, I feel the rampant "lol they suck" was extremely knee-jerk. Their aerials seem pretty decent to me, and they play a really good projectile game in a game where good projectiles are king right now.

This is what I do in every fighting game. It's how you get better. But yes, it's hurt my winning percentage too. And the fact that I rarely hit rematch when playing against someone who's just bad hurts my ability to rack up wins, too.

I had a really good string of matches with this very good Wii Fit Trainer, whom I have very little experience playing against. After six matches of getting better within the matchup, I finally beat her, and we exchanged "well played" messages after and split. I gained a lot from it, but I went 1-5 overall.

Eventually it'll all come out in the wash though. If you're continuing to play at an elite level and all the other elite players are in the elite matchmaking, the average skill level of regular quickplay matchmaking should theoretically start to go down. The game's still only ten days old.

I sure hope so. Gotta bless 'em with the gift of light. What if they pick DMC5 Nero as a shill pick? And why would I still be happy with that?

Nightmare would be cool too, but I'm hoping for a Mishima more. Tekken's always been my jam.

On the topic of 3rd party characters, didn't Nier: Automata's developer say he would do anything for money at one point?
He has said a lot of things. NineS NineS ?

I've never been a Samus main myself, but my brother played a ton of Smash 4 and mained :ultlittlemac: and seconded :ultsamus::ultfox::ultroy::ultganondorf:. In Ultimate, Samus is easily his best character and he's probably switching mains. I can't tell you specifically what's changed about her, but I can absolutely tell you that I hate when he picks her at character select.

Nero would also make sense, but I think Capcom understands that Dante is still more popular and relevant as a character, at least according to fan polls. It's not like Persona where the next protagonist immediately displaced the last one in terms of both importance of popularity.
