Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I dunno, I like taking the piss on fans that go to extremes.

Not innocent "I like Waluigi because he's a cool guy!" kind of fans.

Fans that:

"PURPLE AND YELLOW CHAIRS?! IT'S WALUIGI?!"

"WHY WOULD SAKURAI SHOW US WALUIGI AS THE ONLY ATTACKABLE ASSIST?! IT'S OBVIOUSLY A RUSE TO HIDE WALUIGI AS PLAYABLE!"

Yeah, 'those' are the fans I like ****ing with, people that look into the clouds for Ridley.

He's technically a main character by being playable at all, and being a main villain in at least two of the spinoffs (I'm not very familiar with them all).
Asagi is a character who made her debut in the game, Makai Kingdom, for the Playstation 2, as a bonus boss. After defeating her, she says she'll see you in the sequel, Makai Wars.

Makai Wars was cancelled. She then spent the next almost decade appearing as a bonus boss for other NIS games, trying to beat up the main characters and hijack their game. Each time, she'd have a new voice actor and be a bit crazier.

She got to be the main character eventually... in the bonus route of "Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood!" where iirc, she dies at the end.

Sometime during the early 2010s, she was announced that finally, they'd give her Makai Wars for the PS4! She makes a final cameo appearance in Disgaea 5 where all the asagis you fought from previous games, were evil clones, and you get the one true Asagi who is a serious character.

The team working on her game quit NIS and Makai Wars was canceled again.

She eventually a few years ago finally got her own game for real this time... as a mobile phone game where she is the starting unit you get that you discard because her stats are bad.

The lesson here, is that you can make them important... but they'll never get their own game, or get a chance in the spotlight to show themselves off seriously. They exist as a joke. A punchline. Something to laugh at. And it's why we love them (and why Disgaea 5 sucked)

...I just beat Guile (a Legend Rank Spirit) in the most bull-**** way possible.

Guile is a battle against Captain Falcon, where the Guile assist trophy appears, the same rules applies as with all other Street Fighter spirits (Stamina Battle, everyone has reduced Jump Power)

I was having trouble beating him using Cloud, but then I beat Captain Falcon by accident, by using Climhazzard (not even the Limit version) and meteor-spiking Captain Falcon as he was trying to edge-guard me.

So... uh... fun fact, if you take someone with you with Climhazzard, you take the stock.
The Guile assist trophy is incredibly annoying. Get near him and he messes you up. Get on the opposite side of the stage and his projectiles reach just long enough to still hit you.

That one took me more tries than most of the battles on the map.

>TFW Piranha Plant is more of an recurring character then Waluigi.

Makes sense since he's appeared as an enemy in most of the Mario games. No wonder Sakurai chose him over Waluigi.

Isn’t Daisy’s only mainline appearance in Super Mario Run? And that game was released AFTER a the roster was determined.
And Super Mario Land.

Besides, Daisy's a clone, not a unique character...
She probably didn't take too much development time

This circular logic makes me want to hang myself.

"Waluigi isn't important enough to be in Smash"

-> Then make him important enough so there's no iss-

"NO! THAT WOULD RUIN WHO HE IS!"

Just say you hate his guts and move on. Haters are easier to put up with than people pretending they give a **** about who he is.
That's the trend.
Somewhere, somehow, the fans are always going to come up for a reason to preserve the current status quo.
It happens, for quite literally everything Smash has done.

I love Waluigi, and would welcome him in Smash.

But Waluigi(The character) bullying is what makes him enjoyable. Even Charles Martinet himself says that Waluigi's a self-loathing character, so if you give him the starlight, that kind of takes a bit away from him, IMO at least.

Waluigi is fun because you, and he, realizes what a joke he is.

Daisy was added as a playable character because she’s an easy clone of Peach. Waluigi isn’t in cause he’s got nobody he could easily be a clone of.

Daisy is based off of her spinoff incarnation, and Rosalina is basically a one-off if we ignore her two secret appearances and the spinoffs.
It's not really about where they draw their inspiration from, it's more about where the character originated. Both Daisy and Rosalina began in actual main series Mario titles (Super Mario Land and Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 respectively), while Waluigi did not and still hasn't.

I'm not saying this to diss Waluigi or anything btw, I'm simply stating why I believe he's still an assist trophy and probably will always be one.

I’m pretty sure that absolutely nobody is going to say ‘Oh thats a shame him being playable ruins the joke’ if waluigi ever becomes playable. It’s not a reason to keep him out, it’s a justification for him not being in. There’s a difference.

At least Rosalina though did star in two main games (Galaxy and its sequel) hence her inclusion in Smash.
Galaxy's sequel is one of her secret appearances.

You could say she's sort-of the star due to how her role was in the first Galaxy, but she's more of a minor character that you wouldn't know about until you beat the hard, true final level.

If you ask me, I doubt Nintendo gives a crap about what's a spinoff and what's not when it comes to playable characters.

Can we stop this logic?

Sakurai doesn't operate like that. Sakurai doesn't look into "taking away character meaning" or "mainline games they star in" to add a character. He adds who he feels would have a good moveset in Smash, who would be unique in Smash, who would bring something new and fun to Smash.

Sakurai adds who he wants. It's not rocket science. He imagines who would have a great moveset and adds them when possible. If in the future he thinks up a good moveset that will make Waluigi fun and interesting, he will do it, mainline appearences and character meaning be damned.

Still at least in a main series game never the less.

Alright, i'm outta here.

I like Waluigi, I don't need to be told why that's wrong.

I probably come off as angry but i'm really not, i'm just over the Waluigi hate train. I've been over it since June.

See you guys later.

Sure, but we're also not Sakurai.

I'm not using "He's a character meant to be bullied so he can't get in", I'm just saying that's what makes the character endearing to me since his entire existence is a pointless joke.

I'm glad it only took me like four tries.

I found the worst Spirit Battles on the Final Map to be Guile, Eggman and EVE. Also the Final Bosses are extremely difficult.

It's probably got something to do with me playing on Hard Mode. >_>

So If Sakurai thought of an awesome and workable move set he thought fans would enjoy and wanted to implement it for Waluigi but he would stop himself because “nope he’s never appeared in a mainline Mario game I can’t add him.”

C’mon.

I don’t even care about waluigi that much honestly. I just don’t think the logic behind him being a joke holds up too well.
If you ask me, the first party character that, ahem, ‘deserves’ a place in smash the most is Dixie Kong.
