Because Star Fox had more characters than DK and Metroid. That's the comparison point to the Smash fanbase.
"If X>Y where X=number of characters in that franchise and Y=number of DK/Metroid characters, then series=overreped and Sakurai=biased"

Yeah I remember people complaining Kirby and Zelda had way too many characters, was so annoying. They were always getting straw all over the place too.

No doubt about it that 1/3 of the roster will be cut. Which is why I still think the next best approach is a vs. crossover fighting game in the same vain as Marvel vs. Capcom.

I'm thinking Super Smash Bros. vs. Jump Stars and this is my ideal roster for such a game.

And with his Bat-Force repellent, he will destroy every Jedi and Sith in the multiverse.

I don't think it's a fair comparison to compare the fanbase of a party game to the fanbase of a fighting game.

People focus way too much on what series a character is from rather then looking at what makes that character unique and what they bring to Smash.

Which is why I think the approach should be the one I suggested. It'd definitely be different and not to mention gamings most iconic company against mangas/animes most iconic company both Japanese owned. Plus imagine the gameplay being a hybrid of Dragon Ball FighterZ and Super Smash Bros. as well as a new director being helmed and Sakurai being the supervisor for movesets. Who wouldn't buy that?

I'd still imagine it having good sales considering how popular anime is. Besides you got iconic video game characters (Mario, Link and Kirby) up against iconic manga/anime characters (Goku, Naruto and Luffy). That's definitely a money grabber in my eyes.

That and it'd be the closest thing to Goku in Smash. That should satisfy those that wanted him in.

Namely Capcom, because honestly, they're the only game developer that even comes close to the amount of iconic video game characters Nintendo has.

So, how would you compare the Smash fandom to other fighting game communities like Steer Fighter or Tekken?

I'd say that they're much more invested into the character roster and character inclusion as compared to any other community, even at the expense of the actual mechanics of the character. It's entirely possible that fighting games will introduce a new character just so that the old character can get a new moveset (similar to the Black Shadow -> Ganondorf requests).

Also, since there is a distinct casual and general appeal in Smash as opposed to the other fighting games, you'll see a lot more varied opinions, especially ignorant ones. As a plus though, you'll have a much wider perspective with fans of entirely different franchises pitching in.

The Smash Community is much larger compared to Street Fighter and Tekken because those franchises don't really have the reach of Smash. Smash is full of characters that someone out there is going to recognize. Smash also is something that can be played as a complex fighting game and a hectic party game, which attracts a lot of people who don't play fighting games. This means that the Smash Community is much more diverse in opinion and experience. Some people play Smash this way, other people play it a different way. Because of this, you can't really make generalizations about the Smash Community because it's more of a melting pot than most other fandoms.

Honestly I'd be down for Capcom as well especially since its more likely but Super Smash Bros. vs. Jump Stars is still something I can dream about never the less. I just love the idea of gamings most iconic company against animes/mangas most iconic company. Lot of potential there IMO.

I'd rather see a manga vs comic crossover fighting game which would presumably draw a lot of money in too
