Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

You jest but then you remember KFC is a worldwide successful chain based on the concept of '11 secret herbs and spices" for their chicken that they'll never reveal.

So really people do be gambling with Fried Chicken.
So what you're saying is....
Smash is going to do a promotion with KFC just like Phantasy Star Online and WWE 2K18.

Side Note: I find it a bit hilarious (and sad) that prior to the Grinch and November 1st Direct, a lot of people kept suggesting how amazing the potential DLC could be... only for most people to think that DLC is going to be going the opposite and potentially not even have a fan favorite (unless you consider Bandanna Dee to be one and you think he’s likely).

Irony at it’s finest...

But I want to be proven wrong.

I think people are still kinda depressed about Grinch leak being fake

I mean everyone went into the Direct expecting to be blown away cause of how well made the leak was and then when it was revealed that no, Sakurai was NOT lying when he said "don't expect too many newcomers" people got kinda sad bc even though I don't personally care about any of the Grinched characters those are still like a dream roster for Smash
That Grinch leak was fake to me the first time it was posted and shared. Several aspects about the leak felt off to me that didn't make me believe the leak as much as the ESRB leak (Which the Grinch leak was heavily compared to at the time, which I believed wasn't a valid comparison).

Actually that reminds me.

Did you fulfill your end of Cutie Gwen Cutie Gwen 's bet yet? :p
Already did that weeks ago. It is unfortunate for me, but I honor my bets. It is sad that a "surprise" character is likely not happening for this game.

I'll say the leaks really killed a lot. You couldn't really go anywhere with "I think that X is a good choice because -" "NO VERGEBEN LEAKED IT ALL!!!!"

No with DLC, we're finding out that Nintendo, not Sakurai, chose the DLC. We know that Ubisoft is very close with Nintendo, we know that there were talks with Bethesda, and yet all speculation surrounds Vergeben and Hitagi's choices since Vergeben got everything right so far and vouched for Hitagi.

Also, with only 5 slots confirmed (and Nintendo picking, so they're likely to be promotional over nostalgic), people are understandably pessimistic. Sm4sh even got 7 characters, so this is a bit of a DLC downgrade. Plus, PP threw everyone for a loop.

I don't know what to think anymore. I guess at this point it's just a game to pray for your favorites to get in, but it does seem much more futile this round.
I generally went to support threads, Rate Their Chances, and sometimes the thread to speculate with my heart's content with analyses.

I know the frequency of Vergeben gospel "shoved down your throats" talk was there, but I didn't think too much of it and speculated passionately anyway. :p

What leakers? Vergeben and Hitagi? The only DLC things Vergeben has heard about are the Square-Enix character and Minecraft content.

What has Hitagi claimed? I know he said that the Katalina/Granblue thing might not be happening now, but what else has he said?
I believe Hitagi claimed a sword user from a Nintendo IP, so yeah people think Xenoblade rep or Fire Emblem rep.

I also believe Hitagi claims one of the DLC characters will be western and I believe he/she claims a Namco rep is happening now to

People are so picky man. Learn to enjoy the DLC.
I mean even if Verge leakes some stuff you never know. Maybe the whole Square Enix thing can lead us to Sora or Geno.

I am in the Deodorant Gang, I approve.
Yeah, it doesn't take too long to switch cartridges. I'm fine with it. :)

Though, I do understand why some really like getting games digital, with the convenience of it and all. I just prefer physical copies of games, that's all. :)
You use smiley faces way too much.

So you’re saying that I can’t play the game AND speculate at the same time?

Scoly, I know where you’re getting at, but a lot of people are already planning on playing the game anyways. And some people still like to show their thoughts on potential upcoming characters and new content even after the game’s release.

Sure the game can be out already, but some people still like to discuss with others. Not to mention that some people may not even have Smash Ultimate yet and want to pass time by talking to others on here.

It seems like you’re always mad when we up bring the speculation cycle and always respond with “We’re going to play the game anyways”, when the truth is that some people just like discussing with others about Smash, you know, the purpose of this place.
Well, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t like talking about Smash with other people over the internet would I? I very much like to do that, which is why i’m here.

My point is, there is of course going to be a drop in “speculation” because the entire reason for speculation is coming to a close. The amount of people interested in speculation will drop because we already know like 90% (ish) of the roster.

The jokes I listed like the “I just stare at the CSS” were simply mentioned not because everybody does it, but because the way people talk about the mere concept of speculation seems to suggest they care more about the discussion than the playing which is...interesting, considering the purpose for all of it is actually playing the game.

I like talking about potential picks as much as the next person, but that’s nothing compared to being able to actually playing Smash within 20 days.

Hitagi killed off Katalina, but has suggested a Namco character, which is something that MysticDistance suggested as well when they specifically mentioned Lloyd Irving had a solid chance of being picked.

If you put together Lloyd, Steve, and the SE character, that gives us at least 3/5.

None of it is confirmed, but some of these folks have provided spot on information prior to today, and therefore at least are something to consider going forward.

I see.

It is unfortunate that some view speculation as a waste of time now.

It feels as if you guys wanna move on, throwing speculation in the trash as if nothing happened.

I get the debates and leaks made the viewpoint on speculation more negative that led to the build up of that perspective, but still. :/

Even as someone who did not get 3/4ths of my newcomer predictions right, this current atmosphere on speculation feels off to me.
It's more that we got so much so close together with Ultimate compared to Smash 4. Smash 4 was a year and a half of stuff with the gradual build-up of Gematsu and stuff like the Palutena image, only for Gematsu to be shot down not too long after it cemented itself as "legit" and the ESRB leak to pop up a month before release.

Ultimate was over a span of half a year; insiders start teasing Ridley right after the game's announced, Verg jumps on the Ridley wagon as well as no cuts and Simon about a month later, E3 happens and Ridley gets in but Echoes are also a thing, August direct comes up and supports Verg while also bringing loz18 into the mix for all of a month, September ends up as a bit of a downer killing loz18 and further supporting Verg who's begun calling Ken and Incineroar with an SE newcomer as DLC when the dreaded LE box gets posted, Grinch nonsense less than two weeks before the final direct bringing about several insiders dropping their own unsubtle hints about the future, final direct comes and Verg ends up mostly proven and now suddenly Hitagi's someone who might be worth listening to.

Ultimate's speculation/leak phase was far more compressed and personal (in several ways). We didn't have anonymously relayed newcomer lists posted on gaming blogs that ended up half true; there was no big leak shake-up; you got identifiable individuals interacting with the community and gradually putting down info that ended up correct. There wasn't a ton of current speculation; just "this guy is saying this stuff and if you think otherwise you're hopelessly wrong" and people who thought otherwise ending up hopelessly wrong.

Honestly, as someone who's okay with the roster (my complaints are elsewhere), the current environment just leaves little in the way of fun in terms of speculation. It's far less people with their own theories and ideas for characters going around; it's "Geno fans deny the inevitable while trying to prove Sora can't be in" with a side of Banjo fans ready to tear into Steve and others are ready to whine to high heavens when Nintendo reveals marketable characters for DLC over fan favorites.

As you can tell, I'm saying all this someone who's bought into the right stuff so far.

Smash Ultimate's "speculation" phase sucked and was downright toxic at points, and is something I'd rather see ended ASAP than dragged on for another year.

Here are my DLC predictions presently:

1. Square-Enix character (Geno, Sora, or Dragon Quest character)
This is the one DLC slot that Vergeben knows about. However, its split as to who it could be. Geno has Sakurai's personal preference. Sora might very well be the most wanted third-party character not yet in Smash Bros. Dragon Quest is the biggest Japanese third-party franchise left without any sort of representation in Smash Bros., and there is an upcoming port of Dragon Quest XI coming out for the Switch.

2. Namco-Bandai character
It seems really odd that that Capcom (Mega Man, Street Fighter), Konami (Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania), Sega (Sonic, Bayonetta), Square-Enix (Cloud, whoever the DLC character is) would all have two series with playable characters in Smash Bros., yet the developer for Ultimate still only has one (Pac-Man). Moreover, many of these companies have their series represented through other content in Ultimate (Virtua Fighter has an Assist Trophy, Monster Hunter has a boss and an Assist Trophy, Bomberman has an Assist Trophy). Aside from Mii costumes, Namco-Bandai has no other significant presence in the game aside from Pac-Man. I think the second Namco-Bandai character will probably be Heihachi or Lloyd. However, its always possible that they go with someone else from Tekken or Tales. It is also possible that someone from Soul Calibur is selected.

3. Banjo-Kazooie
Vergeben has gone on the record to say Minecraft content is coming, though he has not said what it is. Personally, I think we will be getting Minecraft content though it will probably be a stage and an Assist Trophy (there are six empty stage slots on the character selection screen, one more than the five slots that will be attached to the five upcoming DLC fighters aside from Pirahna Plant). Banjo-Kazooie did phenomenally well on the ballot. Microsoft has also expressed interest in the character being in Smash Bros. Microsoft owned characters (including Banjo characters) have also appeared as part of a Minecraft skin pack for Nintendo console ports of Minecraft, and crossplay for Minecraft between the Switch and Xbox was promoted at E3.

4. Bandana Dee
It seems really suspicious that Bandana Dee is among the few series critical characters not to be represented in any form at all in Ultimate. Not even as a spirit. My personal hypothesis is that characters being excluded as spirits are being saved to become DLC. Bandana Dee is likely going to be DLC due to his high important in Kirby titles released during this decade, as well as his very high popularity, particularly among the Japanese fanbase. He is probably the one Nintendo newcomer I feel the most optimistic on.

5. Elma
It is extremely suspicious that Xenoblade X has almost no content in Ultimate, to the point where Xenoblade 2 has far more content. The only piece of known Xenoblade X content in Ultimate is a spirit of a Skell. That is it. No music, no Mii costumes, no Assist Trophy. If Elma's spirit is not seen in Ultimate, it will be extremely obvious that she is being saved to become DLC.

That is another thing I'm noticing - and this goes along with all of those complaints about people shilling characters here in the General thread: A lot of the support threads for the 'unpopular' characters have been completely dead, especially after Ridley was shown at E3 and we as a community decided that obviously all of the picks would be ballot winners. It's made it tough to speculate on more obscure characters. We all love to talk about our favorites, but when all we get is crickets in our favorite character threads, it's more than a little frustrating.

Also the fact that this speculation cycle was uncharacteristically short and choppy. Brawl and Sm4sh went for years, but we got daily updates to whet our appetites, even if they were just Luigi's nose. This one was an infodump, then radio silence for weeks, then another infodump.

Which is exactly why the Grinch was such a catastophe. It 'proved' to us that i) fan favorites would get in, ii) Sakurai's 'don't expect more' was a load of bull, and iii) we would get exactly the characters we expected in line with before. The November direct was a huge letdown from there - I didn't care about any of the Grinch characters (and even was against one), but the hype levels definitely took a nosedive with that direct.

I feel like what you are saying also supports Minecraft. Sure Banjo did very well and Microsoft has interest, but Steve would cater to a bigger audience than Banjo.

I think Steve could potentially get Banjo's slot, but I think a Microsoft owned character is definitely coming.

Okay, not going to comment on the rest but can we stop with "no sign from this, hmmm" discussions? It didn't end well for Isaac in Smash For and this game. Some stuff might simply be missing from the game with no ulterior motives.

I'd like Bandana Dee and Elma but I think people are jumping the gun here.

Off-topic, I really ****ing like Let's Go. Sorry not sorry.
I disagree with you on the Dark Pit thing, but I definitely agree that Let's Go is a great game.
My sibling just got a shiny randomly while I was working really hard to get one.
Let's Go is a great experience for all. The haters are wrong.
I have Let's Go Eevee downloaded on the Switch. I plan to get a Shiny Bellsprout and then a Shiny Mewtwo if it is not shiny locked.

The signs panned out for K. Rool (Ridley getting in and hints at Dark Samus getting in), Dark Samus (missing Assist Trophy and Samus' Dark Samus palette missing), and Chrom (Robin's Final Smash not being shown and Ike's Chrom palette missing), they did not pan out for Geno (Sakurai's interview back in 2016), Isaac (Rathalos screenshot and K. Rool getting in), and Shadow (missing Assist Trophy). So its probably 50/50.

thx 4 the invitation for me to **** all over it im just kidding please dont kill me

The problem with this is that the DLC pack does not include any Assist trophies. Sakurai made it clear that it's Character, Stage, Music and nothing but that. If you're going to say Banjo is coming in without a Banjo stage, that's pretty bold.

Also, we have no idea how anyone did on the ballot, so please don't do that.

Yes, Microsoft characters appeared in Minecraft, but isn't the fact that they appeared in Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch more significant than the fact they appeared anywhere else? It's like a Stan Lee cameo, of course you're gonna see it.

Let's Go is just Nintendo preying on your nostalgia. Luckily I play Smash Bros. so I'm immune to this predatory tactic.
Preying on nostalgia is 80% of Gamefreak's new motto.

There are six empty slots on the stage selection screen, unless one of those slots goes to the training mode stage in training mode (we are not sure yet), there is a decent chance that Minecraft gets a stage alone. Look at Super Mario Maker.

We don't know if anything will even become separate from the DLC pack (sans plant) once it begins. I know what you're saying, but that's just unconfirmed potential. And using the amount of space left is pretty iffy, it's not always a given that there's more.

Well, not anymore.
We still got like 4 movies left.

For me, the only major annoying thing about Ultimate speculation was people spouting that the newcomers would be entirely decided on the ballot, it was the popular mindset at the time from the announcement of Smash Switch to the November 1st direct that had many flawed points and arguments that could be made against the possibility.

As someone that has participated in pre-Smash 4 speculation and experienced the same "popular" mindset from the community, I did not let the mindset bother me and continued to discuss in "obscure" support threads like Prince Sable/Chorus Kids/etc.

Deep down, I always felt the community's vision on predictions were going to be wrong and not match Sakurai's choices of newcomers for Ultimate.

I hope for this speculation period, people get more open with the possibility, but I don't expect that and I mostly expect an empty period here with the "popular" mindset staying afoot. :p
