Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

The best thing about Brawl to me is still the accessibility to modding. Like seriously, how come Smash 4 didn't have this? You obviously had graphical mods to make characters look funnier but that isn't on the same level as making a whole new moveset for different characters.

I swear if I don't see this in Ultimate the community has failed everyone.
Real talk, it's because us old timers moved on to bigger and better things and nobody stepped in to take our place.

Just make another ****ing sandwich

LET'S PLAY A GAME GUYS!!!

As we all know, the starting roster will be featuring the Original 8. But what if you could up that to 14 instead to match Melee's starting roster? Who would you pick to put onto the starting roster? Any of the original 8 cannot be removed

:ultridley:(The fan-fav everyone wants to play)
:ultmarth:(Starter for the FE series)
:ultsnake:(Is one of the characters that people would want to buy the game for)
:ultsonic:(Obvious rival to Mario, kids would play him against Mario as a first match if they want to quickly)
:ultvillager:(Very popular casual series)

i cant tell if thats hector or some other lord because armor is generic as hell
im assuming its hector from the pose
Bro, I'm pretty sure Hector's the only Lord in the entire series that actually wears real armor, so that should narrow it down.

Smash 4 had good gameplay, albeit with a few 1v1 issues. Notably defensive options being too useful.

But the Wii U version really lacks something outside of core gameplay. Collecting trophies was nice - it had a lot of ways to earn them which felt rewarding at a reasonable pace.

But is there anything else? We have a few modes back from previous titles (Events, Stadium) which are nice but don't really add anything special to the game. Target Blast is a waste and doesn't offer anything new to the table. It's Homerun Contest redux but with Angry Birds mechanics. Yay?

Smash Tour had potential but the execution was poor. It's too simple, too repetitive, and too random. If it had good board game mechanics it would have found a niche. But as it is? A mess.

Classic Mode was butchered. Master Core/Fortress and the difficulty meter were very good ideas, but the "classic mode" wasn't what we had before. It's at its core an arcade mode with matches that had some logic behind them to face. This one was mostly 5+ player Smashes against random characters on random stages. I still completed it with all characters for the sake of collecting trophies, but it wasn't too fun near the end.

All Star mode was poorly handled and got repetitive very quickly. It was the same order on 2-3 different stages on each set. The new one makes much more sense due to the roster size. The amount of characters we have now makes this mode redundant and outdated.

I liked Special Orders in the beginning, but ultimately they were glorified event matches with a boss battle at the end of Crazy Orders.

Stage Builder...had a nice idea behind it with building your own base idea but was too limited to make it fulfill its potential.

Custom moves - neat idea but people have been over them before. Some of them are way too good and the unlocking requirement is bad game design.

Ultimate is fixing all of these issues. They trimmed the fat, and used the best elements from some of these modes. Event Matches and Special Orders were merged to make more immersive modes in Spirits and World of Light. They brought back boss battles for the latter which I always liked. All-Star became part of Multi-Man which is quite a smart move as I stated above. Classic Mode is back to its roots.

I am actually quite excited about the single player content in this game despite the removal of trophies. They all look like they'll be fun when you don't want to do multiplayer.

Project M was going to add Skull Kid.

They had cool animations and stuff.

Now the only Skull Kid mod I can find for Brawl is some weird Skull Kid-over-Toon Link mod that keeps some of Toon Link's moves and has a weird model.

See, if Skull Kid is playable in Smash ever, he'd better have Mr. Game & Watch's ftilt. That is the only way I'd be content with his inclusion.

80s Nostalgia is never going away.

The Wedding Singer, Freaks and Geeks, Wet Hot American Summer, all love letters to the 80s, came out twenty years ago. And yet, in the last several years, we got Stranger Things, Everybody Wants Some, It, Glow, etc.

You simply don't see this kind of love for the 90s or the 00s. This is not just a "hardcore Nintendo fan" thing. This is a widespread cultural fascination with the 1980s that permeates across all media.

And to a smaller degree, K.Rool and Banjo aren't considered "retro" despite being older than the Ice Climbers were when they were called "retro" because, well, people don't like changing definitions. It's why Nirvana isn't playing on classic rock radio, and those same stations are still playing the same 60s and 70s music they were playing when Nirvana was new. I collect toys, and the toys from the 80s were called "vintage" back in 1995. My toys that were new in 1995 don't qualify as "vintage" now despite being twice as old as those figures were when they first became "vintage." People are stubborn about this kind of thing.
You do raise some excellent points. I think my bugbear is based in-part on the fact that, broadly speaking, gaming on the whole is actually less obstinate about what constitutes "retro" than a lot of other mediums. I frequently see the fourth and fifth generations of consoles referred to as retro. Sony just got done releasing a PlayStation throwback plug-'n'-play. Zelda and Pokémon games released in the 2000s have seen remakes predicated on exploiting nostalgia. And between the Crash and Spyro trilogy remakes, Banjo and Conker spearheading Rare Replay's promotional material, and Bubsy of all things making a comeback it seems like dated 90s platform mascots are coming back in vogue, to some extent. I feel based on stuff like that there's far more wriggle room to call a SNES or an N64 character retro than there is to call, say, The Matrix a retro movie, or Creed a retro band.

A bit off topic, but what's everyone's thoughts on the Detective Pikachu Movie trailer?
I actually liked it. Didn't think I would.

Why would Square want him as DLC as opposed to a DQ rep or Sora? Personally I think Geno is on life support, especially with Nintendo picking this DLC.
Why would Square pick anyone other than Gex?

I'm quite intrigued to see where this goes moreso for the Pokemon than anything else. It seems like some people working on it have respect for the source material, and I like that. I honestly didn't think I'd care, but I do.

Important question. Does anyone know if one of Daisy’s taunts is her saying “Hi I’m Daisy”?

This is critical

From what I've heard, no. I'd have to mod the game to get that in, and I refuse to mod this game.

Skyward Sword is still generally regarded as the worst 3D Zelda, but there seem to be a lot more people coming out and praising certain aspects of it (like dungeons) which they felt that Breath of the Wild fell short in.

Still don't like the game much but would have been nice to see the game referenced more in the Smash Zelda roster.
I really liked Skyward Sword so I remember being bummed when Link in Smash 4 wasn't sporting his skyward sword look. And the only character I really wanted in at the time was Ghirahim. We know how that turned out :(.

Also am I the only one who liked the motion controls? It made fights way more interesting...

Reminder: I only played Melee for about 4 minutes (With the screen from the projector being messy), and I only have Young Link as my main because he was my favorite from those four minutes.

I’ll still play Daisy over Peach. But there’ll always be the question of what could have been
