Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

So glad that I can finally shelve my Wii U for good in a month. (Only to pull it back out in April for this stupid Shovel Knight DLC)

I'm so excited to play Smash Ultimate. Having watched GameXplain's coverage on World of Light, by God it looks huge. It's the first thing I'm diving into for sure.

So glad that Classic mode is super-diversified this time, doing that with all characters next. It stings that there isn't much to Multi-Man Smash anymore, but I'll do it as much as is needed to get all Challenges related to its modes completed.

All that's really left I'm wondering about is if Codec's and/or Guidances are back, or if they have a snazzy new replacement. And just how many Spirits I'm gonna be collecting to get them all.

I honestly don't care who's added as DLC, more characters to play as is already fun (though this is coming from somebody who already got his most wanted, take that for the selfish statement it is). I don't feel fit to really judge with any kind of predictions, they could go the route of picking super-popular characters that missed base roster (Bandana Dee, Elma, Paper Mario, Dixie), they might do promotional stuff (Three Houses rep, Gen 8 rep), or nab up some serious money-raking 3rd-party characters (Sora, DQ, Crash, Doom Slayer, the list goes on way too long), but I do have faith that the characters chosen will be good additions to Smash. Literally my only threshold is non-gaming characters, that's what'd take for me to not like a character's inclusion.

Ultimate has fully delivered on all the hype I've had stored up this whole hype cycle. The core gameplay and roster look to be the best in series history, and with them (seemingly) taking patches more seriously, we can look forward to a much healthier metagame. I can see myself actually enjoying this game for the next decade or so.

In my personal opinion, Sakurai and his team have more than delivered. I don't even own the game yet and I can comfortably wedge it into somewhere on my top 5 games of all time, just barely edging out Luigi's Mansion from the running, likely also beating Wario World, maybe even TTYD. I'll need to give it a while before I can tell how it stacks up to Okami and Pikmin 2.

At this point, I'm just along for the ride of watching the various meltdowns and arguments that'll erupt on this board throughout DLC reveals, this is gonna be a treat. Never give up on your most wanted, but don't put down somebody else's for the sake of championing your own. We're all on this wild ride together.

Except they've listened to a lot of complaints and haven't been a bunch of dumb ****s like the past two generations. You really can't just count them out.
There's a reason the Nintendo Switch is successful right now, and it's certainly learning from the complaints.
But they are a business. I guarantee you that all picks will have a solid 3rd party business reason for it.

So many companies have been asking for characters in smash. Lets get that list out and start waiting for exclusive games from those companies on the switch with their chosen pick as a newcomer in the DLC pack.

I feel like passing on the pack even more now.

You know, except for Villager.
And Pac-Man.
Ridley.
Miis

But at least he's smart enough to know when he was wrong!
Sorry, just to clarify: You're saying those did not work? With the exception of miis, I have to disagree. I think he pulled those characters off beautifully. Ridley is a tad too small though. Ironic. XD

The fact that the characters have been chosen by Nintendo means a lot of stuff.

-I read this as Sakurai not wanting to take responsability for the choices: I think he fears backlash, this means it's likely that the characters chosen won't be from the most popular choices.

-Nintendo usually don't take fan requests and do wathever they think is better or more convenient for them: I expect one or more promotioal characters, and few third parties unless they are in to promote an upcoming game.

-Possibly some characters who are important to Nintendo have bigger chances: Ganon, Toad, Dixie Kong, Tetra and stuff like that. I think this is positive, I prefer to see important Nintendo characters over characters from obscure franchises or third parties (with some exceptions).

-This decreases a lot the chances of getting Geno, since it has been proven in the history of Nintendo and the Mario franchise that Nintendo doesn't care at all of the puppet, sadly.

I have a lot of mixed opinions on this, but after all I'm happy if this means less random third parties.

Third parties are less likely but still possible:
There's the rumor of Steve and a Square Enix character; Vergeben has been reliable so far.
A Square Enix character is still very possible because all those Final Fantasy games being ported on Switch....
I can totally see Nintendo bringing Ubisoft to Smash with Rabbids content and stuff.
A random third party character to promote a new game coming to Switch is possible too.

These are just theories and speculations, offcourse, I'm not sure yet, but that tweet surely influences the speculation IMO.
Sora has a little more advantage over final fantasy they can easily promote kingdom hearts 3 with sora (if Disney allowed it though)

The only Final Fantasy character we're getting is from FFVII, because of the labeling.

So what you're trying to say then, is that Sephiroth is coming through?

Only if they add both the original and Advent Children lyrics of One-Winged Angel for an epic medley would I extremely support him. Aside from that, I'm indifferent, but it'd still be cool to see.

Yeah, sadly upon thinking about it more and more, Sakurai is the Nintendo developer who is closest I can think of to the fan's demographic. He may make swerves, but the man has proven he knows what we want. Nintendo on the other hand, they are the sorts who will go out of their way to do the obscure thing JUST to look unique. It's actually my least favorite part of the company that I love. They can be downright stubborn with their obsession of "Doing it different." I could certainly see this being a disappointment, but I'll hold out for now.

The one thing I will say on Geno's chances is this though: https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/995680065206784000
This is why I'm gonna confident in Geno and Banjo for now, at least until the first DLC trailer. COME ON NINTENDO, BRING THOSE 2 HOME

Soooooooo....... if Nintendo is picking then it’s safe to assume we’ll get another FE character?

I mean.... I love the FE series.... but I’d be perfectly fine if we didn’t get another fighter from it..

I think the alarmism is unwarranted tbh. Sure for a few characters this doesn't bode well, but thinking Nintendo hasn't had a guiding hand over at least the DLC last time is naive. And that turned out fine. In retrospect, at least. Let's be honest, Ryu, Cloud, Corrin and Bayo all seem like picks with which Nintendo would be involved.

All that's different now is probably Nintendo selecting the entirety of the DLC instead of just most of it.

Yeah, but Sakurai isn't the one picking this time.

Remember that he said that this time, the only veto power he has is if he can't make a moveset for the character, and a weapon based character is one of the easiest characters to make a moveset out of.
Oh, I assumed he would've been given a list or something like others have been talking about. I'm sure he still has a say in every choice, even if Nintendo just gives him 5

Banjo-Kazooie in Smash probably wouldn't happen unless they were also on the N64 Classic. So if one is true, I'd imagine the other is.

Such a scenario is win/win for Nintendo and Microsoft. Geno, though... yeah, I don't think Geno is happening.

Despite everybody joking about more Mario, Fire Emblem and whatnot, I'm more than positive that Nintendo would actually carefully choose their picks.

I mean, it's also just as likely that the higher-ups of Nintendo were given a list of who's popular, some other characters from different franchises and whatnot and they looked at what was given, thought about things carefully, especially in regards of the popular characters, discussed among one another, than decided on the 5 they think would be best.......we can hope, right?
I want Viridi
YO BUT PHOSPHORA A BADDY BAD *****, IF YOU CATCH MY DRIFT AYYYY

Deep inside, I always do. Duster is still yet to be shown. And he isn't an AT.

Watch as Nintendo FINALLY listens to the requests for Mother 3 and instead put Duster in Smash. Called it.
Phosphora doesn’t deserve to be alone

imagine if all of smash 4's dlc lineup were characters like Corrin, and you can probably predict how the fanbase will react to ultimate's DLC lineup
We would've gotten Elma, Yarn Yoshi, Wonder Red, and some other pretty cool choices. This isn't automatically a bad thing.

I thought Ninian was Roy’s mother?

I mean, Chrom is a Mii Costume and in a Final Smash. And the whole AT means a character is deconfirmed as DLC is just a fan rule based on one game. You never know with Sakurai.
yeah but until he makes a decision to break the rule i'll stick with it plus mii costumes are like super easy to make for them and the final smash for robin surprised everyone and it really only happened becuase it was carried over from 4and robins didnt need hers changed ot fix the intended dsigns for final smashes in ultimate.

Wait, how many people are worried about the quality of DLC since Nintendo picked the line-up this time?
To be frank, I’m not worried at all. There aren’t really characters I want to get in badly. The only characters I would like to see are Spyro or Banjo. Unfortunately both of their chances are very uncertain, especially Spyro’s since Crash would get in before him. Even so, I’m content with the base game roster and DLC is extra icing on an already great cake.

We keep forgetting the fact that Nintendo has the Ballot results.
You can't seriously tell me Geno didn't do damn well on that Ballot.
Does Nintendo care about the Ballot? That seemed like something Sakurai was taking into account to please some fans.

Nintendo might look at it, but I figured they’d want to put characters in from upcoming games to advertise.

Uh??? How can Nintendo show they care about Geno more than they already have??? What do you mean by this???
A lot of Mario X Final Fantasy/Square Enix crossovers came out over the years, and they never took advantage of those game to bring back Geno with no copyright issues. The only thing we got was a Mario RPG music remix in Itadaki Street.

Yeah, this tweet seems to suggest that Nintendo still cares of SMRPG, but I'm not sure if it's enough of an hint. Everything else says the opposite, including Geno being removed from the Mario & Luigi Superstar remake.

I'm not saying that Geno is impossible, it's just that Nintendo being the one in charge of selecting the characters hurts his chances a lot IMO.

Yeah, but Nintendo maybe saw the ballot, saw Geno, went to Square and then "Yo can I have Geno BBY? It's our sons, not only yours."

And Square was like "Lmao sftu, take Noctis *****." :4pacman:

Y'all are really ready for another Fire Emblem character even though Three Houses has never been promoted or pushed at all SINCE E3, almost FIVE MONTHS AGO. Back with Corrin, we knew about Fates. The game came out already. In Japan, but it still came out regardless.

Not even their marketing for Fire Emblem Fates could match how much they pushed Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and the Torna DLC. Just think about that.
If we wanna talk about "too new", as much as we meme Edelgard and Three Houses, that game is the clear definition of "too new". C'mon guys.

I think my reservation comes from the fact that I hate commercials and people trying to push products on me. Nintendo choosing the characters is at best innocent advertisements and just screams manipulative to me.

I hate crap like that. If it is product placement, I will not buy it.

Same here. I've always held hope for Banjo, but I've never expected it, so I won't be disappointed if it doesn't happen.
Well, maybe I will be a little bit but I would get over it.

I know you're reading this. Vote 2B.
Seriously, can we appreciate Nines work here?! Nintendo had a list of fighters for Sakurai to pick from!

Not this.

Nintendo: "Here are the 5 fighters we want"
Sakurai: "Ohh...I had a couple in mind and w--"
Nintendo: "NO! YOU USE THESE!"

Instead what he is actually saying is THIS is what happened.

Nintendo: "We composed a list of fighters for Smash we would like to see if you can make them work. Try to pick 5 from this hahaha!"
Sakurai: "Only 5 from this list of 34? Give me some time to lull this over."
Nintendo "Take your time"

Read the text thoroughly, people!

Still this could be doom for some, but lets see what happens and WELCOME CHAOS!
You flatter me.

But yeah, I had to post it once I saw how everyone was freaking out, and read the tweet without giving it any second thought. If that continued any further, this place would've gone to hell even more than it already was.

I can't have everyone becoming as insane as me!

note: I may be insane, but I'm not stupid. hard to believe, right?

Bethesda has talked to Nintendo about Smash.
Bethesda has a very good relationship with Nintendo and has multiple big titles on the Switch.
Corporate Nintendo is choosing the DLC.

Bethesda rep basically confirmed.

No, just saying those are all characters Sakurai originally explicitly didn't believe would work, and they were omitted from at least one Smash game before he came around on the idea later on.

But it's funny because I also think Ridley looks a tad too small now. Just putting his shoulders up a bit higher and making his head a bit bigger would do wonders and wouldn't even really change his hurtboxes or anything.

So if they let Sakurai decide on some from a list, since he said he decided if he can make them work...

-Geno/Sora/Slime or Dragon Quest protagonist
-Steve?/Banjo-Kazooie
-Lloyd
-Chorus Kids
-Mach Rider/Gen 8 Pokemon/Doom Guy/Sans Undertale

YOU ARE "MACH RIDER"!
This has probably already been brought up a thousand times, but I feel like Nintendo's gonna choose characters that make sense from a business standpoint. We'll probably see newcomers from currently popular titles / characters from unannounced games coming out in the near future.

If Verge is to be believed, we're probably getting Sora, Katalina (ugh), and some Minecraft character (Steve seems like the safest bet but I feel like they might go for something like Creeper instead).
