Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Holy ****. That's a mobile game's OST?

I'm adding some of these to my work playlist.
Most people here don't realize that Granblue is actually made by a ton of Final Fantasy veterans, which includes composers.

Also, I just caught up with the thread, and looks like Katalina talk has come up again. Is it just me or are there a lot more people hating on her in this thread than there ever was before?

I figured I'd put my thoughts on Katalina's potential inclusion since most of my posts are of me defending her, and it seems like I'm a Granblue shill. I think she would be a pretty cool addition to the roster. Her moveset would be pretty unique since she uses ice magic, which would separate her from being just "another anime swordfighter". Hell, she would at least have a better moveset than Corrin. Corrin's is so uninspired - her only unique move is the pin and she doesn't even turn into a dragon except for when she counters and does her FS. Katalina has healing properties and can raise her defense in her own game, though I don't exactly know how they'd implement that. She'll probably have a meter like Little Mac or Cloud (likely closer to Little Mac's) and unleash a powerful attack when it's filled, or that would just be her FS. Judging by the upcoming Platinum Games game, she summons icicles and stuff to attack (she doesn't actually do this in her main game outside of her charge attack, but they could take inspiration from Platinum).

That being said, she would be a really weird inclusion. All of the DLC characters so far have some history with Nintendo and/or are gaming icons in their respective genres (Ryu for fighters, Cloud for JRPGs). Katalina's only tie to Nintendo is that Cygames is partially owned by Nintendo and they collabed to make Dragalia Lost. I honestly don't think she would be in as DLC and the negotiations probably fell through.

However, her inclusion would kinda make sense at the same time. She could be a promotional character for the upcoming Platinum Games game or the rumored Arcsys fighting game if either games come out on Switch. That would also explain why they would choose Katalina of all people to be the Granblue rep since she seems to be the main character for the Platinum Games game. Another thing is that Smash has represented multiple gaming genres: fighting, JRPGs, action RPGs, platformers, even toys. The mobile genre has yet to be represented in Smash, and Katalina would be perfect for that.

I do find it silly how people are upset at the thought of her inclusion, yet at the same time they want Isaac. Granblue is only niche outside of Japan, Golden Sun is niche everywhere.

They announce the N64 Mini with Banjo in it... AND THEY ANNOUNCE ****ING BANJO IN SMAAAAAASH !
No no, this won't happen lol
IF only! Keep hype in check my dude lol.

Though I would love that they announce the N64 mini and NOT say what the games are.

Make people sweat for awhile.

For DLC, don't forget one of the biggest third-parties:

  • 10s of millions of units sold, still ongoing.
  • Definite moveset potential (army weapons, energy weapons, etc.)
  • Represents the massive FPS genre, would draw in the most consumers who haven't already bought a Switch/Smash
  • Represents western franchises/developers
  • The mascot of an entire console/major tech company's gaming division and established the console line's place in the market
  • Nintendo has a very good relationship with Microsoft right now

I'm personally holding out for the Chief, Imo he's a very deserving addition who would bring in a lot of hype. A modern console mascot would advance Smash even further to being the Ultimate video-game crossover.
Imagine the hype supernova if after expecting B&K and/or Steve we see the Smash cut-in, fade to black, then we start to hear

this

And spirits dont deconfirm so maybe it could happen.
Oh its true.
Keep faith I suppose
Mach Rider's only relevance to Smash is that Sakurai made a joking comment that he wanted to add the character just because of his name, but there's no evidence that he seriously considered the character at any point in time. Excitebike is a much more famous and relevant game, with an Assist Trophy in Brawl and a racetrack in Mario Kart 8, among other things. If we were to get a biker character, it'd probably be that.

Chorus Kids' only relation to Smash is from the Gematsu leak and a Rhythm Heaven emblem slot in the code for Smash 4. Otherwise, Sakurai's never commented on or hinted at them in any way.

As opposed to Takamaru and Geno, who have both been mentioned directly around two separate Smash entries and have been given Mii costumes in Smash 4. They would've made better subjects for the Grinch hoax, but for some reason they went with the other two.
That’s why their chances are slim (until they get deconfirmed quickly)
Otherwise, David Hayter is left with jack-all to do, so what could he be around for then? Besides possible WOL dialogue
He’ll be voicing Snake in a Palutena’s Guidance crossover with Pit (Palutena and Viridi stay, but Snake will join in in the fun to bond with his new buddy)
Okay, favorite quote from any appearance a Smash Bros character is in...

I Will support Agumon on his topic.
Sorry guys, maybe i was just a idiot.
I wont speak about his chances much but I can at least say that as a Namco Bandai IP, it at the very least has two things in its favor. Bamco currently has only one IP in smash and it still has games coming out so it isnt like digimon is dead.

I like the character (probably because I have gotten paired up with Agumon a lot) for whatever my opinion may be worth. Good luck!

Alright, here's ZeRo's full tier list. Ranked in order of best to worst from left to right, up to down. I think this is the final version of his list for now until the game's out.

Banjo on the N64 Mini would be a slight eyecatcher, but I don't think it'd mean anything towards their chances in Smash.

However if a new Banjo game gets announced at that Xbox event in a few days, suddenly they look A LOT more likely for DLC.

If Banjo-Kazooie are on the 64 Mini we're gonna run into our old friend, Crashboards.

But that's more a testament to the frailty of this site than anything else. :p

I mean... Yeah, I get that. But do we actually know when the deal with Cygames went through? Or is that still unknown?
I think it's unknown, but it'd probably be sometime in 2016, possibly even 2015

You know those recent posts really got me thinking about Geno.

With how much Sakurai loves Geno and knows we love Geno, would getting him as a simple Assist Trophy been a real hassle? Would've been easy promo for Squenix, no worries about all the playable nonsense and the nooks and crannies that come with that.

So it makes me wonder where the heck he is. He's just a Spirit.
Why so?

Hm.

As a person who doesn't know much about Katalina, thank you for explaining her in detail. That being said your statement makes sense, she would be the representative of mobile games. Stranger things have happened before, so I can see it.

That would easily surpass Cloud in terms of hype reveals
I don't say this lightly, but if they reveal Banjo, Steve and Master Chief together that might even beat Sonic.

In the west at least.

Noticed there's a lot of Master Chief support than usual...
Master Chief is a cool guy and the rest of this ten-year-old reference.

Anyways, I have to wonder if we’ll be getting another random character like :ultpiranha:? Like Slime would actually be pretty awesome!
Probably not, I feel like he'll save that for next time.

Besides, I wonder if he'd be able to make the Polar Bear of all things playable.

I supported Isaac. Maybe that wasn't the brightest move, seeing as he is an Assist, but that can't be that idiotic, can it?
He is back in the game in some form, so it's not entirely in vain. Just grounds for trying harder.

I hope he likes Ep 1...

That explains a lot.

I actually think Master Chief should lead the charge to represent Nintendo and Microsoft's friendship. He also is pretty important to the FPS genre, he's the closet to the ''Re-created and carved a legacy for modern FPS" as you're gonna get in Smash Bros to be honest since you can't really add Bond and most other FPS games have really really boring characters.

Outside of Overwatch and I wouldn't mind Tracer, but Master Chief would be pretty hype you'd be insane to think otherwise.

Would Agumon cause more Hype or Salt?
That probably depends of the context and the circumstances. If he is somewhere down the middle of revealed characters, there is probably a bigger chance for hype.

If he is the last revealed, I can imagine a bit more salt. In this fandom, last reveals usually provoke a lot of salt.

I see you all have a great discussion going on here. After reading for awhile I just wanted to put in my own 2 cents.

My Prediction is this
*Geno
1.Chocobo
2.Catalina
3.Steve
4.Mach Rider
5.Rayman

What I hope happens
*Geno
1.Sora
2.Banjo +Kazooie
3. Catalina
4.Shadow
5.Dixie Kong
Personally I dont think we can take Sakurai at his word everytime he speaks in interviews or directs. Yea they are good for reference, but the fact is, nothing is for certain unless it is officially announced. For example movesets can be thought of for any characters regardless if Sakurai seems the task difficult to do.
Also we currently know they at least have an idea of what characters or companies they would like to work with.

That being said, Vergeben who has had a good track record should be taken into account.

My theory is we will get a square enix representative, microsoft , ubisoft, Cygames, and another nintendo character.

-Square Enix-
Square Enix will be an exception. I strongly believe they will eventually get 2 representatives. Geno being the first, and a second one coming in due time. Unfortunately Geno will be the odd man out when it comes to the character, music, map package. The point im trying to make here, is that we will get him but his inclusion wont be like the other 5 established DLC packages. I would guess that he actually becomes an echo for the gunner mii fighter.

As for the second character, thats hard to pin point down. But I believe we have to look at what makes sense to them from a business and marketing perspective. The possibilities I can see are

SQUARE

1.Noctis
-While im not for this personally, I would not be surprised. For some reason Square refuses to let FF 15 die.

2. Sora
-Sora is possible, with Nintendo having a good relationship between both disney and square in recent years. (Ex. Wreck it Ralph cameos)
However I only see this happening if the switch gets any of the old KH titles or Kh3 ported over to it. Either way, with Kh3 coming out this is an excellent chance for promotional reasons. BUT, due to KH3 releasing so soon I doubt they maximize the benefits from his addition. The reason I think this is unlikely to happen is because there are potentially more hands in the pot when it comes to profit this dlc could bring in. Splitting profits 3 ways versus 2 might end up being what keeps nintendo away from Sora

3.Dragon Quest
I think the chances of this is a lot lower than what people give it credit for. Dragon Quest has no problem selling in Japan, however its not as popular out here in the west. DQ has been out here for years, but its success has declined over the years when you look at the sales. This isn't a fire emblem situation where they can use this to introduce it to western gamers.

4.Generic FF Monster
-Probably a Chocobo. As much as I want Sora in this game, my bet is on this. With hd ports all coming to the switch, no character best collectively represents FF and Square, is more recognizeble, and would bring some kind of marketing upside to their situation.

5. Tomb Raider
-Cant say I see this happening. With Tomb Raider being so tied up in movies and most of the games missing out on Nintendo Consoles over the past years Id say this is safe pass.

CYGAMES
1. Catalina
-I think Vergeben being one of the most credible sources we have right now makes this one a no brainer. This would pretty much be a Fire Emblem situation. I dont know much about this character, but Project Re Link looks amazing. This is a great opportunity to make a transition for western fans. Unfortunatelt I think she will be too much like the 200 fire emblem characters we have in the game.

Microsoft
1.Banjo+Kazooie
-I believe this choice is less likely than the latter, but it is the option im hoping for. I see this being a more likely option if the dlc release coincides with the release of an N64 Classic. And only if the N64 classic contains some trace of Banjo+Kazooie.

2. Steve
-As much as I hate to admit it, from the marketing side of things this makes sense. Minecraft has a huge following, its for the younger crowd much like the switch in general, and would probably guarantee sales among a larger base of people.

My problem with Steve is more personal than anything. I believe his character would be a "lazy" addition to the roster. Blocky art style that is easily modeled, choppy animations, etc.
Many of you will argue that he could bring interesting gameplay mechanics. While this is true, I personally cant see any building mechanic working without slowing down the gameplay too much.

What would be the ultimate solution is B+K as the character, Music from B+K, and a Minecraft stage.

Nintendo
One thing I have noticed on here is that many posters have made lists of all third party characters. Id be more surprised if we didnt get at least 1 Nintendo character.

1.Dixie Kong
2.Mach Rider

More To Come

Two things should be addressed in the next two years.
1.Echo Fighters
2.Sega

Its likely we will get more additions beyond the first year. But I cant help but wonder if there will be some new echoes in between some of these dlc packages. Might be asking for a lot, but to coin the term "echo" fighters and only add Ken,Simon,Dark Samus, Chrom and Daisy is weird to me. Im expecting 3-5 more echo characters.

As for Sega they feel a bit under represented compared to the other 3rd party characters that were already present in the game. Eggman being a bowser Jr echo, or Shadow being upgraded is what Im predicting

Neither. Confusion is more likely.
And apologies across the board.

There's also Duke Nukem, though he's considered a joke at the moment, he has plenty of sass. In the meantime, Master Chief can work, just hope Sakurai is fine with a guy who never shows his face.

If were going for FPS characters, the prime choice is Doomguy due to the fact Doom is one of the OG shooters, the FPS genre was labled as "Doomclones" for years.

After that goes Chief, since he made FPS on consoles popular, and helped with online play on consoles a lot.

Then after that, it putters off into the likes of Duke Nukem, Joanna Dark, the tf2 crew, etc etc.

Then you get nongame characters like Turok and Bond who were big on N64 but break the rule by being from literature/comics.

Hm.

Its really hard to tell with Square. They are one of the companies that are known for being incredibly stingy with their characters and music. Every-time Square allows their characters in another game there is always something in it for them. We see examples of this with Noctis in Tekken 7 and Assasins Creed Origins. Or with the recent 2B in Soul Calibur 6 and a FF monster in Monster Hunter, they are always trying to find ways to cross promote. They allow their characters to be guests in other games, but there is always a reason why. They either have a secondary deal in mind like allowing Cloud in Smash Wii U. Which helped in them releasing several FF games including FF7 on the Switch. Or they want cross promotion.

With Geno though thats a hard one to tell, because outside of Smash they have no interest in the character. The closest he's had to being in one of their games is there is a doll that looks like him in KH3. Logically it would make no sense to put him in Smash except to appeal to fan demand. Yet outside of Smash they have no interest in the character. So at this point its hard to tell will they put him in for fan loyalty or will they push for one of their more well known characters that can help them cross promote.

Sega already has Sonic and Bayonetta... They're fine. If anyone is underrepresented, it's Bandai Namco. They helped develop the game, yet they only have one character in Smash...

I would say, as someone there for all of them, this would be the official unofficial third-party reveal hype/reaction ranking:
1. :sonic:
2. :snake: (cuz first)
3. :4cloud:
4. :4megaman:
5. :4bayonetta:
6. :4pacman:
7. :ultsimon: (cause leak)
8. :4ryu: (cause even bigger leak)

no time for echoes
but Ken would still be above Ryu haha

This is just guessing, but I think I would put both Banjo and Sora between Cloud and Mega Man. Maybe Mega Man above Sora, just because MM was so freaking popular beforehand. I think both would be a crazier "get" than Cloud, but the fact that no one was even talking about Cloud beforehand lends to the intensity behind being blindsided. I'd say people have sort of acclimated to the idea of Banjo and Sora, even if they don't think they'll get in.

Also looking at that list really just underlines how many more third-parties we're definitely gonna get through DLC.

My deal is that they already allowed Geno in a sense as a Mii costume. I don't know why an Assist Trophy would be too much harder to do.

I guess I started hoping for Geno again too early, hah.

I'd argue that isn't a good reason for getting rid of that mechanic, but that's a conversation for a more competitive based thread I feel. Change for change's sake isn't good enough of a reason either.

As for Geno stuff, the only way I see him getting in is if Sakurai REALLY pushed for him, and made a deal with Square. I don't see Square being fine with Nintendo taking just one character from a 20+ year old game that hasn't seen any action since, they'd make way less money than if Square gave one of their bigger properties. I could see Geno in a package deal with another character like Sora, but I don't know if Sakurai would want to make two DLC characters from the same company.

I do think it's curious that Nintendo got the image rights for Geno for this game, with the image thing for your profile in Spectate lobbies. That suggests talks did happen enough for them to come to some sort of agreement over the character. I wouldn't say it's enough for Geno fans to get excited over, more so another thing to keep in mind.

Any edge that Agumon would have has dulled a long time ago. Digimon was a prevalent series, but it's not anymore. In a different life Agumon may have been a popular pick during the heyday of the series - if Smash had been in a different place then - but he isn't now. If people other than you are clamouring for him, they're few and far between or very well hidden. The most prolific example of Digimon in the "gaming" space are twenty year old tamagotchi-esque virtual pets, which had its audience planted almost completely in Japan. The ties with Nintendo stop shorter than other Bamco series, of which most of the more prolific ones have demand and some manner of existing representation within Smash. And while I suppose none of these individually are damning, together the picture painted is not a positive one.

Basically Digimon is a relic series, but unlike those included in Smash, like Pac-Man or Castlevania or something, its legacy has also diminished to the point of making it rather indistinguishable from countless other series that theoretically could be included, but have equally scant merits in their favour.

It's like if Yokai Watch faded into the background and twenty years from now someone thought Jibanyan had a chance.

Oh and for future reference, I'm not a guy.

This also doesn't help.

You caught me, it's not that Agumon is an exceptionally unlikely choice, it's that must I hate him.

And it's the people who argue against Graizen that are biased.
I never said it was about "hating" the character in question or not. What I meant is that there's just other picks people want more so they just don't care for or even really want to see those other more obscure picks like someone like Agumon. Since it means a slot has been taken up by said obscure characters, that's what I mean by bias. To imply there is zero bias when discussing possible Smash inclusions is bull****, and you know it because there is. Everyone has that number one person they personally want to see, everyone has their biased picks. That's why I used that word it's just true, hell I'm not gonna pretend to deny that I'm biased too because everyone in these types of discussions is biased it's just the nature of this type of discussion. As such there will be people who speak out against certain characters based on said bias a lot of the time from what I've personally seen with nothing really to back up their claims. Hope that answers why I worded my reply the way I did.

If Sony were to get a rep in Smash, who would be the most likely character ASIDE from Kratos?

And it makes me wonder, would Sakurai push for him like that?

I just hope there's Treasure games in this thing. While I hardly expect them to port the Dreamcast translation for Bangai-O, Mischief Makers and S&P are definitely realisable, as long as Treasure's willing to afford an agreement.
I really feel like S&P is going to be the N64 Mini's "Killer App" in the US much like StarFox 2 was for the SNES Classic. And if that's the case, I welcome it. Especially if it means getting Mischief Makers alongside.

but Ken would still be above Ryu haha
Really? I feel like he would be lower because everyone kinda figured he would be in. Also that one leak that everyone knew was real made the reveal unsurprising.

Very well done in explaining your points, I can tell there was some research behind these thoughts.

I would love Noctis, but is not going to happen he already is in Tekken 7. Despite the fact that FF15 still has a season 2 dlc pack coming, and that they have been milking the series. I just don't see it happening especially since Cloud already represents FF franchise. As for two Square reps, thats really hard to think of. Mostly because Square is very stingy with their properties. We haven't see them release two at a time before. It would satisfy a lot of people if both Geno and Sora got announced. However given Square's strictness with even just lending out music, its hard to see two reps for DLC from them.

Final thought I wouldn't count out Dragon Quest. Dragon Quest has more sales than both Kingdom Hearts (excluding sales from KH3) and Super Mario RPG. Also with Dragon Quest 11 being released on the Switch it would be great cross promotion for them.

Neither. Confusion is more likely.
I feel the same way about what people's reaction will be if Deathborn got into smash. Like nobody has played GX before, but I think there's not going to be as much salt since he would fill a lot of "hype" quotas. I guess the major salt mines will be the Black Shadow fans... but it wouldn't be the first time their fave got totally disrespected by Deathborn...

no that would be his introduction
