Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

He didn't say that specifically; he said Rex couldn't make the roster because of his game not being released in time (or something), but that could've been referring to the base roster.
Welp, now I'm left with questions.

I seriously need someone to draw Chrom and Robin victory posing while Chrom and a Chrom Mii Fighter are clapping awkwardly!

One month and one day until the VGAs, one month and 2 days until the game comes out.

At the very least, we'll hopefully be able to pin our first DLC character down.
Personally if they are going to show a DLC character, I hope they have a full trailer for it. I want to absorb it all at once. It would be sort of lame if they just showed Sora t-posing at VGA and then said "see you in 2019!" It was understandable with Mewtwo as a veteran, but by then I'll have the actual game to play, so just let me enjoy that and show me something worth sinking my teeth into when the time is right.

Regardless whenever Smash 6 shows up (I can be very patient for that), I just want to know if there will be another worldwide ballot again, it would suck if they went back to it being Japan-only like before 4.
It's a good question. The main issue is timing, because the ballot would have to be released before the design document is finalized. Posting it early would show their hand. I'm not sure how they'd go about it.

But it's not really that anymore. Sakurai himself has said it's a general gaming celebration. Characters like Dante or Steve or Sora or Doomguy would be FAR more interesting than some Zelda oneoff character or a guy from a c list Game Boy RPG.
Opinions are like arseholes, everyone's got one, and I'd rather see characters like Dixie Kong or Bandana Dee than the vast majority of third parties.

Wait, I thought during the direct Sakurai said that DLC was also decided among the base roster? Can someone clarify for me?
Don't remember if that was the exact timing but we DO know it happened before XC2's announcement.
People keep conflating two separate comments into one.

First he said:

"We decided which fighters to include when we started planning, so we couldn't add characters from titles like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, which was announced after planning had started."

Then he talked about Rex and Xenoblade music, and then he changed the subject to the DLC fighters and said:

"We've yet to create any of the paid DLC, and we haven't locked down any release dates, but we'll start working on them as soon as we're finished on the main game."

Two different statements that should each be taken on their own.

Just imagine the Game Awards reactions for Sora? My god it will be good.

Now imagine the Youtube reactions for Steve? That probably will be the best ones!

Okay, favorite quote from any appearance a Smash Bros character is in...

Ready, GO!

"TAKE ME TO YOUR MASTER!" -Simon

"KING KAY ROOL, professional bad guy!" -K. Rool
Shulk - "We need to stick together from here on, and we'll be right as Reyn. Get it?"
Lucina - “I say when it ends!”
Link - "He's got a dumb belly."
Dark Pit - "Where's your goddess now?"
Pit - "Sorry to keep you waiting!"

I can't seem to recall, but didn't Sakurai say that we would only know our DLC characters on the day of their release? Or are you referring to possible behind-the-scenes gossips that leakers/insiders like Verge, Mystic, Leaky, Hitagi, etc. have access to?

The idea that a character like Rex or another 1st party character getting in being "old news" isn't really the point. People like the character. Japanese fans sincerely love XC2 and Rex was a frontrunner for DLC.

XC2 also has Torna: The Golden Country. Sakurai has played, and loved the game, and it happened to be during Smash Ultimate's development time, so I imagine that had something to do with the Mii Fighter costume.

I simply don't think, after every fan rule has been BTFO, game after game, that we should start making new fan rules for future DLC characters. I would simply lay out the "eligible" characters as anyone who isn't already a playable character, a boss, or Assist Trophy. Maybe even lump stage elements in there.

The eligible characters, potentially, are anyone who happens to be a Spirit or a Mii Fighter Costume. That's my opinion anyway.

I predict a direct based on updated for games already out and online stuff.
Kirby just had their 3rd DLC pack teased so it isn't unlikely.

Everyone's cut off for "okay, all the important Nintendo characters are in" differs and is completely arbitrary.

I'm sure there are people here, in this thread, who felt Ridley and K. Rool didn't meet that bar and Smash was "done" with Nintendo after 4 besides the obligatory Inkling and Pokemon.

Gatekeeping the cut off for a Nintendo crossover seems asinine to me.

Also I'm gonna have to be real on the Cygames talk, Nintendo and other companies have fallen out on so much stuff, that if Nintendo and the producers of Burnout couldn't agree on making an F-Zero game, good luck with Katalina in Smash.
Aren't they making Dragalia together right now? And it's doing pretty well last thing I saw.

If that was the case why did he say that during the DLC section of the presentation?

So all my speculation went out the window, nice. At least DLC will be a surprise, which in the end, all good with me.

It's just confusing because he addressed Rex being too late for base during the DLC section because the costume is DLC. Which creates some understandably confusing context given that and their unclear phrasing. But I'm in agreement that two different points were made during this part.

It's doing really well. The average player spends three times as much money on Dragalia Lost as they do Fire Emblem Heroes. Which is why it's Euden everybody should be worried about.

They've definitely decided on which characters will be DLC. The only question is when those characters were decided; early on or later in development?

Spawn Wave is saying it's about Mario Kart mobile, apparently.
Ah yes, that's been in the works for a while now. I guess it should be ready to show off pretty soon.

Having a normal Direct a week after the Smash Direct would be so ****ing infinitely confusing
They KNOW what we'll expect
Not really. Sakurai said pretty clearly that it was the final Smash Direct, and there's nothing else about the game to show or explain.

Let's Go Pokémon, maybe something about Star Fox/F-Zero. No clue otherwise.
Yep, can't believe I forgot about Pokémon. Won't hold my breath for Star Fox/F-Zero.

I'm hoping for more details on Animal Crossing if the early 2019 release rumors are true, but tbh I doubt it and am really only confident in Yoshi and LGPE shilling to hell.
Some info about Animal Crossing makes sense. I don't think they would've shown it off if it wasn't <9 months away from release. Their big 2019 game is probably going to be Pokémon, so Animal Crossing releasing earlier in the year wouldn't be surprising.

Lol, watching Zer0 stream and he just skipped all the mid and high tiers and put Chrom at the bottom.
That recovery situation's worse than I thought...

Also, wtf Zelda, Ike, Roy, Shulk, Young Link, and KRool are top tiers, lmao.

Just quick quick on Katalina
I obviously don’t know any of this for sure and am just not researching it bc not that serious but:

I know she’s from a mobile game, but isn’t she “potentially” going to be the lead in an action RPG? And weren’t there “apparently” talks of a granblue fighting game?
I understand why people don’t want her and I certainly understand why people wouldn’t be excited for her...
But I have to ask would you still hate her even if she had an amazing personality in smash and a super unique cool moveset?
Doesn’t it seem silly to hate characters before you even know about them in game(aka incineroar)

Now I get that YOU DONT HAVE TO BE EXCITED, OR WANT HER, but for me some of the best things about smash is having a character you know nothing about make the roster...and then discovering them and their series.
(Yes I know she is PAID DLC, but genuinely don’t buy her if you don’t want her you’re not at a loss.)

Just think it’s a little harsh to literally rip a character to shreds before you know anything about them ;*
(Easier said than done I understand but still)

I can't imagine that, if this VGA rumor is right, that they haven't started the paid DLC.

Also, going hogwild on third parties means we're probably just getting a bunch of lead protagonists from series and less secondary characters.

Nuts to that. Smash is literally the only game where I can play as characters like :ultpalutena::ultridley:, or get to really enjoy deep cut characters like :ultkrool::ultrosalina:. You know what would be boring? 90% of Smash characters going forward being the guy you see on the box of their origin games.

I think the best way to do it is stealthily; say you have a ballot aimed for realisable DLC characters for a season 2 pass, any excess votes for characters that didn't make it in the pass could be kept in mind and seen as selections for Smash 6. This way, it's a win-win situation, if backhanded.

Kirby just had their 3rd DLC pack teased so it isn't unlikely.
Can I please get a source on that, this is news to me. :joyful:

Agreed, a hundred times. It wouldn't be fun if, for example, Ashley got in, and it was deemed that no one else from Warioware, let alone Wario Land should be allowed. Or if you couldn't ask for any more Kongs in the event Dixie finally got in.

Variety is the spice of life, and I'm open to just about any character options.

What character do you think that the mechanics they have from their games would fit into Smash Bros.?

In my opinion, it would be Spike from Ape Escape, considering that the B/Special/Grab inputs only switch the gadgets themselves and you have to use them by manually using the right analog stick.
Steve with Minecraft's crafting system...
It'd be a bit like Shovel Knight in Rivals of Aether, where he gets resources during the fight. He can bring up a menu where he can craft some items and stuff...
