Smash is on a very dangerous path right now. I've never been mad at a reveal before. Disappointed, sure. But every character so far has been a worthy inclusion in some way, and for many people a dream come true. Until piranha plant. Being a smash bros character means nothing now. There's no requirement. There's no status needed. Smash characters can just be whatever now and it doesn't matter. Pirahna plant is a blemish on the roster and I would rather get no freebie than have this character. It legitimately ruins the roster somewhat for me. Now we may be getting a third party mobile game character. What a truly ****ty idea. It's basically the equivalent of getting a clash of clans character. And steve. I have nothing against minecraft. I like minecraft. But steve is just a knockoff lego man with practically no animations. Another garbage character. And the square nix character may just be ****ing slime. Generic enemy number 2. This is a ****ing ****show if it's true. It doesn't mean anything now. This may be my last smash game. I love the whole base roster. I think I'll keep it untarnished by avoiding the dlc and then stay away from smash in the future if Verg is right. It makes me incredibly sad because smash has always been one of my favorite series. But if this is the kind of content we have to look forward to then I'm out.
The notion that a character has "to earn it" or "deserve it" is such a confusing and silly notion to me. What does that even mean? These are fictional pixel people on a screen, they cannot "earn" or "deserve" anything.
Being a Smash character means nothing now? Really? What did it mean before? It's just a playable character in a video game, it's not some coveted status. If all of Smash's characters need to be industry big shots to get in, then I guess say goodbye to anyone who ain't affiliated with Mario, Zelda, or Pokemon.
Like it or not, Steve meets all the requirements of these silly fan rules that this fan base likes to keep insisting are fact when they really, really are not, but to humor them for a second:
Icon status: Minecraft is one of the most successful video games of all time, and is huge with many, many children. You're kidding yourself if you think Steve and Minecraft aren't household names.
Move set potential: Plenty. Stage control, projectiles, weapons, crafting mechanics, summons, you name it, Steve can do it. What makes him such an interesting choice is that his potential is nearly limitless thanks to the game he comes from.
Fan demand: There are plenty who would be thrilled by Steve if you go outside the tiny echo chamber bubble that is this fan base.
And to touch on Piranha Plant, not liking it is fine, but really? You're gonna let one character ruin Smash for you? I'm sorry, but if that's all it takes to ruin Smash for you, you probably weren't all that interested before. Your comments about "anyone can get in now" are correct...because that's always been the case, especially with first party characters. There have never been any special rules about who does and doesn't qualify. Y'wanna know what the only rule is? It's this:
Do Nintendo and Sakurai want to do it? Yes? Then done. It's as simple as that.
