A joke? The ****? Geno may have always been one of those insanely unlikely picks people didn't think were going to happen but the community's desire for him wasn't ever a joke. It's actually the reverse, as he's been requested for so long and so consistently it's become a cliche of the speculation period, and the jokes derived from him are similar in that of Ridley or K.RoolPiranha Plant is a far bigger name than Geno though. Geno started out as a joke, but then people went too far with it to the point where they now want him in Smash and have become a bit deluded that he's a necessary pick. SMRPG was a fine game, and Geno was a decent character in it, but it's hardly a game that deserves to get special treatment in Smash when the superior Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door exists.
And being a bigger name is exactly what we're saying ISN'T required for smash recognition. When was Ices a bigger name than any of the other retro games from the NES era? They're only remembered to this day because of Smash, and even then Geno isn't in the same position. SMRPG is a classic game with a deticated fanbase and it's well remembered in the gaming community for being a unique entry to the series.
If what you want to argue is who deserves it more, then you're wasting your time, as deserving it never mattered in the first place, else obscure characters like Captain Falcon wouldn't have ever made it into the series in the first place
This is about a character making it in due to fan demand, and if Geno is the one with a lot of fan demand above a Paper Mario rep, then there's no reason Geno shouldn't make it in
