Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Nonsense! I went straight for the bottom of the barrel and ignored everything on top.
I literally broke my lurking silence on this thread just to tell you that this is the funniest thing I have read over the past couple of months.

I personally won't lie though I found the first movie okay at best with no interest in seeing the second. I wouldn't mind Ralph's inclusion.

There's a pretty good chance they're lying.

Can't wait for the Emoji Movie 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet

:4pacman:
Yeah, I am pretty sure they're just tweeting out these codes to rile people up, but say they do have knowledge of what is in the game, then that makes the situation a bit worrisome. Going to hope they're just screwing around, haha.

And then people use Dark Samus as a counter argument :V

Uh, we already saw Toony’s FS, the Triforce Slash is still in.
Toon Link's website video show it's unchanged
Somehow I thought people were saying Toon Link's Final Smash might be different. What's wrong with me.

Do you people think that RDR2 might overshadow Smash Ultimate?
No, because they're two very different games launching over a month apart. If Smash had launched this week, then I'd say yes, it would to a degree, but I don't see how RDR2 is going to completely overshadow the next month and a half. If it was GTA, maybe, but despite RDR2 still being Rockstar, I don't think it has as much of a broad appeal. It'll definitely sell better than most games this year, but I don't think it'll be GTA-level.

By the time Smash comes out, the RDR2 hype should die down, and Smash will hold the December spotlight.

Okay, legit question if there was some multimedia character that'd actually fit in Smash, who'd it be?

I'd go with James Bond or Popeye, the former having Goldeneye in terms of Nintendo/VG history and the latter being the original basis for Donkey Kong.
And considering Disney surprisingly helped Nintendo out in its early days in some way, maybe Mickey Mouse could work alongside Sora whose final smash would have Donald and Goofy? Ralph has the one VG movie but not an important video game presence.

First, we need to stop putting Isabelle into semi-clone status. Aside from aesthetics, she shares very little in common with Villager. Same dash attack, same neutralB, similar upB. Are Lucario and Mewtwo semi-clones too?

Second, even though Snake, Y. Link, Pichu, Wolf and Ice Climbers aren't newcomers because we've seen them before, they needed to be recreated from the ground up in the Smash Ultimate engine, with brand new textures, 3D models, animations, etc. Nothing can just be ported from Melee/Brawl. They have direct references to use, so the characters kind of skip the concept phase, but past that, they take substantially more work than echoes and more closely resemble newcomers in terms of work load.
This is the attitude I had for Smash 4's DLC "veterans" along with Doctor Mario.

The latter obviously set the precedent between "custom edit" and carbon clone (before we knew the term Echo Fighter). But it's still dumb to assume he didn't take work to differentiate/be given his old effects and moves (obviously Brawl Mario didn't have the same down air/down B anymore, so Luigi was likely involved as well)

I even add 4's DLC newcomers to the "still feel new relative to Ultimate/compared to launch Smash 4" boat, in the sense that their animations have been polished/refined rather than just straight ported. Things like Mewtwo's new default stance being reminiscent of his Pokemon Stadium/early gen 1 sprites, Roy having fire effects on his up tilt/down air now, and Ryu's Final Smash seemingly having special hit animations for the enemy now (compared to Smash 4, r.i.p. Captain Falcon's neck) were completely unnecessary, but just as appreciated as the work and love put into all the small details of every other veteran fighter/newcomer.

This is so sad on so many levels how they're in damage control. Especially after taking Serebii's quote out of context.
Whew okay nintendo I'm buying it...

Though yeah if this were to be laid on any thicker I'd call it Chun-Li and put in my special folder.

Tony Hawk could be an ideal Smash fighter.
Revolutionized extreme sports and stunt sports games, iconic to gamers and non gamers alike, and us from a popular game franchise that has sold millions of copies and is on Nintendo systems. And his skate based moveset would put hin apart from every other fighter. Sure, the series isnt what it used to be, but then again we have :ultsonic: and no one complains abiut him being in :yeahboi:

Lmao some of them are trying their hardest to say something positive, “th-the graphics are really good!”, “it’s a really good game.... for beginners!”

James Bond or Scrooge McDuck. I predict them with tongue-in-cheek but considering Bond was considered and requested and Scrooge had a videogame that was very influential and well-regarded I'd love either. Plus it means DuckTales music in Smash.

I just think Scrooge especially would really fit aesthetically! Also I'm a giant DuckTales fan so I'm biased.

Why would you think this?

Both have different target audiences on entirely different consoles. Both good games with a lot of hype, yes, but they won't "steal" any customers from each other, if any.

Even if someone out there had to get one game for Christmas or etc. down the line they'd get both if they truly wanted them.

If we're being completely honest... Probably Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader. Like, I think if there was for some crazy reason a Star Wars rep, they'd probably choose one of them as they're both equally iconic and use lightsabers.

I never though I'd see the day when Nintendo/Game Freak is struggling to sell a Pokemon game on the Switch. Wow.

Well, if we get Rabbids, there's no reason we shouldn't get Minions as their echo fighter.
Man. You just made me realizes that Mario (and Nintendo in general) now has ties to both Rabbids and Minions.

What in the **** is going on in the world of Nintendo?

Or it's actually a fun, well made game and there will be people who like it.

I'd say wait until the game is in more hands, or perhaps try it for yourself if you're interested. IMO, that's the best way to truly judge the merits of a game.

If there's anything I've learned the past hour, it's that Crunchii is more of a snake than our favorite soldier of fortune, and Let's Go is on a worse downward spiral than this board.

We cannot have Gru in Smash...

Gru is too big for Smash.

They're both released more then a month apart from each other, plus they also have different target audiences so it's extremely unlikely.
If anything Smash Ultimate has a bigger stake in RDR2's audience than Rockstar has in Smash's.

Yeah, now see what happens when you appeal to gunwunners?

The variants of the old guys were fine but people like the wacky ones like the ice cream or the garbage bag.

If Star Wars ever happened, we'd better get "I'm Han Solo" in some form.

This is gonna be Last Jedi 2.0 is it not?
The only way the game gets that polarizing is if a large amount of people's expectations are inaccurate.

It's been pretty clear with every new detail about the game that this is a watered down Pokémon game for beginners. No wild Pokémon battles, can't fight Brock unless you have a super effective type, etc. GameFreak haven't exactly been shy about stating that this is a game meant for people unfamiliar with Pokémon. Why the hell they think that's a good idea when people have been introduced to the series through the main, more complicated games for the past 20 years, I don't know. But their intentions have been pretty clear about this being a game for casual audiences unfamiliar with Pokémon mechanics outside of Pokémon Go.

But if a lot of people buy it expecting a faithful remake of R/B/G or FR/LG, then there's going to be hell to pay. Perhaps GameFreak might patch in a mode to make the game less handhold-y and more like an actual Pokémon game, depending on how much backlash there is. But that would take a lot of work, and with the next mainline game around the corner, it probably wouldn't be worth it.

I want Let's Go to crash and burn to incentivize TPC but it won't.

To say I'm cynical about gen 8 is an understatement.

Honestly I can't figure out why people are so mad about Let's Go. Looks like every other ****ing Pokemon game, just with different catching mechanics.

Also people who are still mad at Last Jedi are the biggest losers in the world lmao. Get over it. It's nearly been a year.

Gunwunners? Are those Genwunners that own a Gundam? :)

"Gunwunners" sounds like a thing said on political fights.

Wasn't there that whole thing of Scrooge McDuck having helped inspire Japanese Manga artstyle or something? Maybe that'd make him even more fitting for a spot?
