Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

King Dedede seems to enjoy the box.

(the artwork is not made by me, it's an official artwork from Kirby's Japanese Twitter; I just edited and added effects to it).

I decided to check into this since I was curious about this as well, and I have found a few instances for December Directs. I'll do a general list to try and keep this looking neat:

12/7/2011: Covered 3DS and Wii games, was also Nintendo's 2nd-ever direct (with the first being 10/21 of the same year). Was Japan-only.
12/5/2012: Covered 3DS and Wii U games.
12/19/2012: Dragon Quest X was covered, and it was a Nintendo Direct Mini. Japan-only, considering DQX didn't release in the west.
12/18/2013: Covered 3DS and Wii U games.
12/15/2015: Smash 4 DLC Direct, which announced our remaining DLC fighters.

So a general Direct for next year's titles could be possible, though it might be determined by how soon we get our next information for Ultimate. It is possible to have a Smash Direct in November and a general one in December though, as November of 2015 had that happen in reverse. It's certainly within the realm of possibility.
I see. Thank you ^^ So yea there could be a possibility to have maybe a mini direct about fire emblem or a direct in general. We still don’t know much about other games like bayonetta 3 (it been confirmed the development is going smooth), Smt5 or Metroid prime 4. But I have a feeling these games will be in a Spring direct though.

So at this point, I'm expecting only a final direct left, and no more individual reveals. I think the "lower rate" comment by Sakurai was just specifying that there would be significantly fewer announcements left, and I'm putting my money on just one more: A Smash Direct.

On the low end, 2 Characters (1 echo and 1 unique): Ken and Incineroar obviously

On the high end, 6 (3 echoes and 3 Uniques). My guesses are:
- Ken (leaked)
- Incineroar (allegedly leaked)
- Shadow (Like Isabelle)
- Skull Kid (Like Isabelle)
- Dixie (Diddy's missing colors so far and jab)
- Geno (Square rep possibly)

Replace any of the above with Elma, Isaac, BWD, or RH rep, even Celica as well, as each have some pretty decent merits for being in the game. Characters like Black Shadow, Medusa, and Black Knight are possible shoe-ins for obvious echoes, but who knows. I personally don't think Steve is a character and only AT related content, and rather Banjo will be one of the first DLC characters. My personal opinion though.

So anywhere from 2-6, but I still dream that Sakurai will bamboozle us and just give us all 14 of the characters I just mentioned

Tl;dr: scientifically proven 14+ more characters or your money back guaranteed.

Edit: I'm going to assume the direct will be anywhere from October 18th (this Thursday) to November 2nd. Anything after is pushing for a really bad leak to happen.
I'm thinking if we get only one more Direct, the most likely scenario is 5 characters--and even that's pushing it, unless some characters are revealed alongside one another (like Simon/Richter).

I think Ken and Incineroar are the most likely, because of Verge's rumors and the Ken leak. If there are no more stages (the pessimistic view), then the SE rep would mostly likely be Geno. If there are more stages, other characters like Sora become more likely as the SE rep. I feel like the only other character who's most likely in outside of Verge's predictions is Shadow--missing assist, presumably replaced by Knuckles, easy echo. I really would love Dixie to be in, but I can't see more than 2 echoes being in, and her evidence requires much more inference. Likewise other missing assists (e.g., Skull Kid) would have to be unique, and have a lower chance than echoes.

If there are more than 4 characters, however, I do believe Banjo & Kazooie has the best shot. Rumored Minecraft content suggests Microsoft's involved, and unless they came in late, would probably have a playable character--and Banjo's popularity surged in 2015, during the ballot, so the timing works out. Add to that Microsoft going back to their N64 design, it seems to be lining up. However, my doubt is in the number of characters--I can't see how 3 unique characters would be in one Direct. Outside of that, given their popularity, and some possible indications from Ultimate itself, I could see Skull Kid or Bandana Waddle Dee being in. Less so echoes like Black Shadow, Medusa, Black Knight--Isabelle really put a big question mark in how echoes are chosen and how many we'll actually have, as I had originally thought it would be 50/50. I'm much less certain about Rhythm Heaven and Elma, given their indications is outside of Ultimate itself, but they're the most interesting unique first parties to me, along with Isaac. It's tough--it feels like if it's only one Direct, it may contain only information that's already been rumored, or too stuffed. *fingers crossed*

I do think we'll be generally surprised. No credible leak had leaked Chrom, Richter, Dark Samus or K. Rool in the August direct. It's very possibly there are several characters that could surprise us.

I think one thing about this bar theory that makes it feel like its something more than just a smash demo event is that even the bar doesnt know what it is. Usually with a smash demo you'd think that they would be open to the establishment about it since its been at plenty of events before, but the secrecy of this is pretty strange.

There's a bar theory now?

Are you guys just joking around, or is this actually a real thing.

I think it would be very likely to have surprise characters not rumored--what makes me doubt that, however, is if we only have one Direct left, any surprise character would cause the Direct to be more content than in the August Direct. Perhaps a character or two could be revealed with the single player mode, and not necessarily at the beginning/end. But it does concern me that the characters so far rumored would not require a stage--could be coincidental, and I hope it is.

Never got a chance to respond to this but wanted to:

I know this question is not smash related but are there any other games you are looking forward to besides smash?
Metroid Prime 4, New Pokémon Gen, Mortal Kombat 11, SoulCalibur, Samurai Shodown, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Animal Crossing, Starlink, Civ 6 for Switch, Injustice 3, Marvel vs Capcom Infinite-rebranded-to-4-if-you-believe-Verge, Bioware’s Anthem, Bethseda’s Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6, and Fallout, CD Projeck’s Cyberpunk 2077, and continued support for games such as Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, Dragonball Fighter Z, Destiny 2, Overwatch, and Heroes of the Storm.

If it was something in NY, LA or Japan I might think it was important, but a screening just in Canada? It’s probably just a demo of smash or some other unrelated thing.

If there's one Canadian rep we should get, it's this guy.

And don't you deny it.
Winnie-the-Pooh isn't Canadian, he's British.

He's just named after a Canadian Bear.
(Unless I'm an idiot and that isn't Winnie-the-Pooh)

Stuff like this at least gives us dates to anticipate. It's like passing by checkpoints in a level in a video game.

A very, very long level.
