Shantae has fun games. Pirate's Curse was way too fanservice-heavy for my tastes, but still fun. Half-Genie Hero is a pretty fun game. I like the characters, the writing, and the gameplay, but I'm not gonna pretend that at least a chunk of the interest in her isn't because she's a qt grill.

She's imo the most *coughkillmecough* deserving indie given the length of her history with Nintendo, quality of her games, and the scope of her popularity in comparison to other indie characters. But to say she's anywhere near Ridley, K. Rool, Waluigi, or Isaac levels of popular is insanity.

I'm sorry man, but 'indie frontrunner' is a good twelve or so steps down from 'first-party frontrunner.'

It's not good to bring discussion to your character in a negative light.
Shantae's been noticed; for a long time now, she's well-loved.
What isn't well-loved is constantly propping her up as some sort of goddess. That only annoys people and drives them away from supporting her.

It's a symptom of being really hopeful for your character, especially after seeing Ridley and K. Rool happen, but not putting your hope in the proper perspective.

I've heard at least one Shantae supporter say that she's the most prominent indie video game character of all time, and I've heard Geno supporter say that he's a more prominent video game character than Lara Croft. That's blowing things way out of proportion.

Some of this happens because of counter-arguments that try to downplay the significance of characters, though. Bandana Waddle Dee's "Goomba with a hat" counter-argument is one example. You can't really make an objective measurement of how popular or prominent a character truly is, so it's mostly a subjective domain, but as with any subject, people often take their opinions to extremes.

Even when Samus's Dark Samus alt color was missing and the Dark Samus Assist Trophy was MIA, along with the introduction of Echo Fighters, I still didn't fully believe that Dark Samus would be playable. Because I recognized that Metroid is still a relatively small series compared to other Nintendo games, and it took us this long to get Ridley, so it'd be a long shot for us to get another character. Also, Dark Samus isn't a very popular character by any means; definitely nowhere near Ridley's popularity.

Against all odds, she made it in, and I consider myself extremely lucky. But I'd never overstate her prominence. She only made two appearances in games that didn't even sell over 2 million units each. She's probably the luckiest character to ever make it into Smash. I still have trouble believing it actually happened, because it's pretty unbelievable.

Shantae is a character from a long-running and successful series that has a lot of history with Nintendo, and Geno is a character people have been requesting about as long as Ridley and K. Rool, even if their numbers aren't as large. Though Geno has the added benefit of being both mentioned by Sakurai on two occasions, and added as a Mii Costume, and several Mii Costume characters have been turned into full fighters for Ultimate (Inkling, K. Rool, Chrom, and Isabelle). I think Geno has more going for him than most other characters at this point, but there's never a way to be sure that it's enough.

You'd be surprised how many people throw out Geno because he's not REALLY that wanted or something like that.

It's giga-hard picking new reps for each of the existing 3rd-party companies.

As far as SEGA is concerned, it'd be nice to see NiGHTS, Billy Hatcher, or Jet Set Radio back in action, but they feel more like Assist material to me, given the scope of their franchises. If I had to pick a new character it'd probably be either Kiryu or someone from Yakuza (please don't kill me I'm not much of a SEGA gamer, I've never even played Shenmue or Yakuza).

Konami has Silent Hill and Konami left and those are the only big ones from them that comes to mind (poor Bomberman). Either Frogger or Pyramid Head would be great characters imo.

Square has a lot to pick from but it feels like a can-of-worms topic on this board right now.

Phoenix Wright easily had the biggest support group during speculation, and he'd be cool, but Ghosts & Goblins is a classic and Arthur would be cool. Some companies I have a harder time picking new reps than others. In terms of third party characters I'd like, or I can see being possible:

Spoiler: Giant Wall of Text

Konami: While there are many iconic characters, a lot I have a hard time seeing in Smash. Bomberman's the real big one missing. Frogger would have the iconic status, but probably not the moveset potential.
Sega: If any third party series could get two characters, it would be Sonic with Tails. For Atlus, I'd like Joker with Jack Frost incorporated somehow.
Capcom: So many possibilities it's hard to narrow it down, but mainly Dante. I'd love Ghosts 'n Goblins, maybe not as a character, but certainly for a stage and the music. Also seeing Zero's assist makes me want him as a playable character. Phoenix Wright certainly has the popularity, though it all depends on if Sakurai could come up with a different type of moveset than he has had in fighting games.
Bandai Namco: I feel like Lloyd's most likely, while Heihachi makes more sense as a DLC character. Klonoa would be amazing.
Square Enix: Geno's been wanted for Melee so I definitely see him being the SE rep (especially if there's no more stages, the others would require a stage--I think there's more stages, though). Sora would be the most hyped character, and more likely and possible than people think. Lara Croft for her iconic status in gaming (though realistic weapons may be a deterrent). And a Dragon Quest rep, probably Erdrick. There's too many SE characters to choose from.
Microsoft: Banjo & Kazooie given their history with Nintendo and popularity as a fighter. If Banjo gets in, I'd have less issues with Steve even though I don't think he fits the bill as a fighter. Master Chief would be great if he can get over the barrier of not being on Nintendo (though his Minecraft skin might be enough). And personally, I'd just like Banjo and Conker, even if I think the latter's really unlikely.
Activision: Crash would be a perfect fit and the most iconic platformer not yet in Smash. I'd like Spyro, though characters like him are much tougher to visualize in Smash. For a Blizzard character, I'd probably be okay with some Overwatch representation with Tracer.
Ubisoft: Rayman easy given his trophy, it's just a question of how popular he was on the ballot--Ubisoft would be totally on board.

I'm sure I'm missing some, but those are what pop up in my mind.
